When can we get back to church? Some congregations are meeting in various ways. Our church leadership have this conversation almost daily. Many of you who have asked this also say, you are not ready to risk in person worship. We have had a few small gatherings especially for people who do not have technology to worship online, which is obviously not like being together. The reasons for our particular church not having in person worship is that our building is very difficult to socially distance in. Singing is still a risky activity and if the worship leaders sing with people present, we risk become spreaders. Our congregation is also rated the highest risk in the risk assessment scale.So when? Simply put, when it is safe. Numbers of cases are steadily multiplying, especially on our campuses. The virus is here with us. Our only way to slow and stop the spread is to deprive it of victims. And as a shepherd of my flock I am sworn to defend it from predators.The second question is; What? Almost as terrifying as the pandemic is the controversy over the upcoming election and the threatened social unrest concern with a disputed election. We need to stay steady, trust our local election officials, vote, pray and hold fast to our democracy. Russia is working to undermine our democracy; the FBI has raised the facts before us. We need to carefully verify the truth in the news, be skeptical of social media claims, and listen critically.It is not incidental that the social unrest and the pandemic have come together. The pandemic has simply exacerbated the tensions already present in our culture, in inequity, the racism, the forces of hate that are attempting to terrorize the nation and kill our democracy for totalitarian aims. We need our eyes wide open to “What” is happening.
