Dengue and Zika virus infection patterns vary among Aedes aegypti field populations from Belo Horizonte, a Brazilian endemic city

Raquel Soares Maia Godoy and colleagues show that the mosquito responses against dengue and Zika viruses are distinct and that mosquitoes from separate populations of the same city have different abilities to deal with the viruses in both cases.

PLOS Neglected Tropical Diseases broadens its coverage of envenomings caused by animal bites and stings

To broaden the coverage of a variety of conditions that share the features of currently recognized neglected tropical diseases, PLOS Neglected Tropical Diseases will accept manuscripts dealing with snakebite envenoming, scorpion sting envenoming, and envenomings by other animals if the studies deal with epidemiological, clinical, therapeutic, social science, and/or public policy aspects.

Dengue outbreaks in the COVID-19 era: Alarm raised for Asia

Xinting Lu and colleagues argue that with medical resources and personnel being directed to battle COVID-19 globally, the pandemic may have grave repercussions in the resurgence of other infectious diseases such as dengue fever, especially in resource-limited countries with both endemic dengue and intense COVID-19 transmission.

Clinical and laboratory characteristics of hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis induced by Leishmania infantum infection

Qi Shi and colleagues find that parasite culturing and qPCR detection of bone marrow samples facilitate the diagnosis of visceral leishmaniasis associated hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis, but prompt treatment with anti-Leishmania and immunosuppressive chemotherapy can reduce mortality.

Yellow fever vaccine protects mice against Zika virus infection

Ana C. Vicente Santos and colleagues demonstrate that the yellow fever vaccine elicits an immune response that protects against cerebral infection by zika virus. Their findings suggest the possibility of using an available and inexpensive vaccine for large-scale immunization in the event of a ZIKV outbreak.

Ovitrap surveillance of dengue vector mosquitoes in Bandung City, West Java Province, Indonesia

Hadian Iman Sasmita and colleagues conclude that the ovitrap surveillance system is a sensitive tool for monitoring the population dynamics of Aedes vectors, predicting dengue outbreaks, and potentially improving community-based conventional larval surveillance.
