PROCESS AUTOMATION ENGINEERING

Process Automation Engineering is a conglomeration of multiple skill sets requiring the understanding of multiple systems and how they all work together.

In order to be a well rounded candidate, I spent much time and effort gathering skills and experience from level 0 – AC/DC circuit analysis/relay logic troubleshooting, level 1 – interface with level 0 systems/ladder logic, through level 2/3 systems where decisions on the data generated at the lower levels are made.

In addition, the effort to understand sensing technology and more efficiently read the associated documentation led me to obtaining a rare certification in the automation world – ISA CCST (International Society of Automation – Certified Control Systems Technician)

Studying and obtaining the certificate was more than just a paper work move for me, it represents a difficult challenge that I had to overcome in addition to a wealth of knowledge and experience that applies to every fundamental aspect of what is Process Automation Engineering. I was able to use this experience to earn promotions three times throughout my tenure at ArcelorMittal.

COMPUTER SYSTEMS INTEGRATION

Every system is really a merger of many smaller systems, each requiring its own specialized skillset. When something goes wrong, the first problem can often be the most difficult: which system contains the error?

I can help you identify subsystems containing root problems quickly and easily. As part of a multidisciplinary team, I can help to troubleshoot and correct issues on the most precise level.

I have experience in systems integration including Cisco, VMWare, Manufacturer Specific Storage Arrays, and more. NETWORKING

Networking is the thread that connects everything. Without a well designed and maintained network, everything else becomes pointless since it becomes very difficult to move data around.

Having years of experience pulling, terminating and testing network cabling such as CATx, Fiber, COAX and the understanding of how to certify cabling using testing devices such as OTDR’s, I am able to pull/terminate/verify/document critical cabling infrastructure.

Coupled with my knowledge of varying types of networking devices like switches, media converters, reflective memory hubs from varying manufacturers, I’ve seen and corrected a great deal of network issues.

CYBER SECURITY FUNDAMENTALS

Cyber Security is extremely important to the reliability, stability and high availability of automation systems and data integrity.

I always push for a fundamentals approach to everything, especially security fundamentals.From ensuring your operating systems are up to date with the latest security patches, implementing ACL’s to protect sensitive networks from lateral network movement and training users on what phishing attacks look like.

I have a wealth of experience on these fundamental best practices and can bring them to your organization.

DATACENTER VIRTUALIZATION

A fairly significant portion of a datacenters’ operating costs are hidden unless you have the know-how to find them. These costs include things like electricity, room cooling, spares management, capital expenditures on unused system capacity.

Virtualization takes unused system capacity and makes it useable. This means that the same work can be done with a smaller hardware package thereby reducing operating costs.

The most recent project I undertook with ArcelorMittal at the 80 inch hot strip mill was designed with the intent to replace all funcitoning servers in the datacenter with five 96 vcpu DL380 G10’s and two HP MSA 2050 SAN’s each with two shelves. Each SAN consists of a highspeed data access tier and another with an archival capacity for data that doesn’t require low latency.The 10Gig network connecting it all together was built on a fully redundant Cisco 3850 platform and is co-located between two datacenters to preserve data integrity on failures.

While the initial capital costs were large, the greatly reduced operating costs add up over time. Ultimately yeilding a 90 percent reduction in overall system cost per virtualized server.

ORGANIZATIONAL MANAGEMENT

I firmly believe the day-to-day issues add up to cause intra-organizational strife. In order to mitigate these issues, I practice a management philosophy predicated on communication to clarify operational procedures, set limitations, and develop expectations based on defined performance metrics.

I prioritize cohesive working relationships in the workplace and beyond. In the past, I’ve organized the sharing extracurricular activities and even a Thanksgiving Potluck in order to build close with co-workers.

This philosophy has been tested thoroughly over my career, having built and maintained a few high performing teams in my management roles.
