This will be done in a way that recognizes the important role that visitors play in supporting patients, along with the need to keep everyone in our hospital safe.As a first step, patients who have been in hospital for more than 30 days will designate a visitor. The hospital will contact those individuals to make visiting arrangements. Visiting can occur Tuesday to Sunday, 12:30 - 4:30. We appreciate how difficult it has been for patients and their families and friends to not see each other during the pandemic. The resumption of services will be gradual, starting June 2.If your procedure was postponed, the hospital or your healthcare provider will contact you when it is time to reschedule.Our resumption plan follows guidelines provided by Ontario Health. The plan prioritizes those with urgent needs. In addition, our approach recognizes the need to maintain an adequate supply of personal protective equipment, drugs and human resources, as well as adequate inpatient bed capacity in case of an increase in COVID-19 patients. Thank you for your patience.MEDIA RELEASE April 29, 2020Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) Update:Norfolk General Hospital Emergency Department Remains OpenHospital Increasing Capacity for Pandemic PatientsHospital Emergency Department Remains OpenThe NGH Emergency Department remains open during the pandemic.For everyone s safety, please note that patients will be screened prior to entering the ED so that appropriate precautions can be taken. Patients should continue to practice social distancing and wash their hands while in the waiting room.Patients cannot have anyone accompany them into the hospital (except for the parent/guardian of a child).Emergency surgical procedures continue to be performed. Elective surgeries have been postponed.Safety is ParamountNGH continues to monitor and respond to the COVID-19 pandemic in collaboration with Public Health, Ontario Health, the Ministry of Health and hospital partners.The safety of our patients, staff and community is paramount. The hospital is following guidelines provided by Public Health and Infection and Prevention Control Canada (IPAC). Initiatives are focused on limiting the potential spread of infection. Everyone entering the hospital is screened, visitor access is restricted, and staff are wearing the appropriate personal protective equipment.Please see the hospital website for restrictions to visitor access and limitations on acceptance of food and personal items. We recognize the impact of isolation for patients and families during this difficult time. We are providing assistance with respect to virtual visits with patients.Capacity Being Increased to Care for Pandemic PatientsThe hospital is taking significant steps to increase capacity to care for COVID-19 patients. The Intensive Care Unit is being increased by 11 beds, and a further 36 beds are being added in other areas of the hospital. A dedicated unit to support patients with suspected and confirmed positive COVID-19 has been opened, and can be expanded if needed. Staff have been redeployed to areas where they may be needed most, and additional staff have been hired. Capacity is further complemented by Public Health s creation of a 54 bed Interim Care Centre in Port Dover. It is truly impressive how our team has rallied together to quickly accomplish such a significant amount of work. I want to thank all of the staff and physicians who have been working to ensure that those impacted by the pandemic receive the best possible care. Visitor Restrictions May 13, 2020Due to the extremely high risk to visitors, patients and staff, visiting will be prohibited for all COVID-19patients, including both confirmed and suspected cases. Virtual visits will be supported usingtechnology such as iPads.No visitors are allowed for other patients at NGH, with limited exceptions for essential visitors.Essential Visitors include: One visit by one designated person to a patient who is dying or during withdrawal of life support(determined by the clinical team) One designated support person for a woman in labour Parents/guardians of an ill child or youth in the emergency department Exceptions to this policy may be considered for rare circumstances not described Essential visitors are required to wear an identification bracelet while in hospitalWe ask that you clean your hands when you enter and exit the facility, as well as when you enter andexit your loved ones room.Food and Personal Items for PatientsFood and personal items will not be accepted at screening desks due to infection control and safety risksfor our staff and patients.Exceptions: Glasses, hearing aids, dentures, one personal cell phone/tablet, clothing required forpatients who are being imminently discharged.Acceptable items listed above can be delivered to the screening desk at the hospital entrance and willbe bagged then delivered to the patient s room. The patient is responsible for all belongings and/orvaluables in their possession during admission. NGH assumes no responsibility and or liability for lost ordamaged valuables and or belongings brought to the hospital.Items will NOT be accepted if the person delivering them does not pass the screening criteria.
