Future School converts the Korean Pavilion at the 17th International Architecture Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia into an international incubator for radical thinking–a meeting place to exchange and encounter ideas and projects that actively explore the notion of building a better future.
A global coalition of people, places, concepts and practices, Future School connects participants and programmes across borders and distance while fostering diverse modes of engagement. The ultimate aim is to forge new and multiple solidarities in the face of current and future challenges, including migration and the growth of the diaspora, the impact of climate change, and the increasing speed of social and technological change.


CAMPUS STRUCTURE

During the 17th International Architecture Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia, Future School manifests within the Giardini in the form of a physical campus, hosting exhibitions, workshops, installations and conversations. A series of core commissions adds sound and movement, food and drink, and even a Code of Conduct for all participants. This Venice campus connects to other Future School campuses globally and to Future School Online, a new digital environment.
The aspiration to cultivate cross-disciplinary, interactive engagement of all kinds is reflected in the flexible use of the pavilion site–specifically the inclusion of informal domestic spaces that gently but resolutely dissolve the boundaries between learning and living. These include an open kitchen, a circular lounge, and a retreat room constructed entirely in hanji, a traditional, handmade Korean paper.
This is also the driving force behind Future School Online, which is both an archive and an active architecture that facilitates networking information and ongoing collaboration. At a time when travel and close contact are fraught with complication, Future School Online demonstrates how technology can support a globalised, collaborative approach to facing humanity's most pressing challenges.


PROGRAMMING AND CURRICULUM

Together with contributing architects, educators, artists, theorists and advocates, all visitors are invited to participate in acts of unlearning and relearning through various Future School events running for the duration of the Biennale. Each event is recorded and broadcast within the pavilion as part of an installation that grows and changes over time.
In both its physical and virtual manifestations, Future School offers more than 50 programmes exploring issues that range from cooling urban environments and the futurology of schools to innovative spatial interventions and borders as spaces of integration. This curriculum constitutes the core of Future School's first academic cycle, which launched in summer 2020 with several preliminary programmes held in Seoul. The design studios, lectures and seminars, discussion panels, exhibits, and other pedagogical interventions taking place during the Biennale Architettura 2021 will then culminate in a final 'semester' back in Seoul: a comprehensive exploration of the generated archive that will contribute to the development of yet more innovative programmes both in the Republic of Korea and beyond.

SPATIAL CONCEPT

AN OPEN CAMPUS

A house, a well and a garden—a shared space for gathering, learning, rest and contemplation. This was the fundamental concept behind Future School’s occupation of the Korean Pavilion. This is not a space for consumption, but a space for living, for exchanges and for discussion. The Korean Pavilion is a unique structure within the Giardini of La Biennale di Venezia. Built in 1994–1995 to a design by Seok Chul Kim and Franco Mancuso, the only permanent part of the structure is a pre-existing brick toilet block. The rest of the building is, ostensibly, temporary and built around the mature trees on the site. This means that it is not the square box with straight walls and controlled lighting that some curators would desire it to be. Instead, it is transparent, with glass walls and unexpected curves, flooded with sunlight. Future School seeks to embrace the original intention behind the pavilion’s creation, revealing the story behind it while also exploring the full potential and quality of its architecture to host a new kind of school. The openness of the pavilion becomes its greatest asset, connecting the interior to the garden of the Giardini beyond its walls and creating a place of gathering.
This vision has been brought to life through a close partnership with Future School’s spatial design team, Ryul Song and Christian Schweitzer of SUPA Architects. The brick box at the heart of the pavilion is transformed, emulating the style of a traditional Korean house, with handmade hanji paper floors. A circular grass carpet by landscape architect Ah-Yeon Kim becomes a symbolic space of assembly. A modest kitchen, made possible by the existing plumbing within the pavilion, allows participants to offer tea and water to visitors, served in Jeju Onggi ceramics. An undulating Process Wall hosts an evolving, layered display of exhibitions and outputs, alongside the full programme of Future School, organised across A4 sheets of paper. A cluster of screens provides an exhibitionary platform for media. The roof—never before used as part of a Biennale Architettura exhibition—becomes a common space as part of the Curators Collective initiative. These physical spaces are complemented by the virtual space of Future School’s online platform. The two are inseparable, providing each other both content and context.
With the climate crisis high on the list of urgent issues the school will engage with, it was also important to pursue a strategy that would minimise the environmental impact of the physical pavilion. This demanded a design that could be created by reusing what already existed wherever possible, with minimum shipping of new materials and as little waste left at the end as possible.
The realisation of this ambition has been a true collaboration between the team in Korea, the small family of keepers of the Korean Pavilion that have been caring for the structure and its flow of temporary occupants for more than a decade, and the contractors in Venice. This positive exchange of knowledge and expertise toward a common goal echoes the ethos behind all of Future School's programming.


FUTURE SCHOOL GENERATIVE DIALOGUES

MYRIAD APPROACHES: HOW WILL WE LIVE TOGETHER?

Future School’s Generative Dialogues are a core part of its overall programming, providing occasions for exploratory, process-oriented engagement with various subjects central to Future School's ethos. The shape and direction of each dialogue is determined by its participants. Within Future School, the term Generative Dialogue describes a planned moment in which diverse parties come together in an open conversation that generates new ideas, actions and chains of thought for participants and audience members alike. It is conceived as a tool to find a way forward in times of crisis – a way to bring people together towards positive action.
Future School's Generative Dialogues are built on a tradition that pre-dates written history. The simple act of gathering, listening and exchanging ideas and perspectives has furthered human knowledge for millennia, whether in the form of storytelling, rhetorical debate or teacher-pupil style interactions.
This tradition remains strong in Korea. The pyeong-sang—a common piece of furniture in Korea—is an elevated, modular platform, delineating a communal gathering point. In this spirit, Future School’s Venice campus will host many of its Generative Dialogues on a circular carpet created by landscape architect Ah-Yeon Kim, laid out in the heart of the Korean Pavilion. This will be complemented by Future School Online, a digital environment co-created by all participating exhibitors to serve as both a space for active debate and as a publicly accessible archive of past Generative Dialogues. 미래학교란?

미래학교는 제17회 베니스비엔날레 국제건축전 한국관을 급진적 사유의 국제적 배양소로 전환한다. 따라서 더 나은 미래의 구축이라는 뜻을 적극 탐색하는 아이디어와 프로젝트를 접하고 교류하는 일종의 만남의 장소가 된다.
사람, 장소, 개념, 실천의 글로벌 연합체인 미래학교는 국경과 거리를 뛰어넘어 참가자와 프로그램을 연결하는 동시에 다종다양한 참여의 양식을 촉진한다. 미래학교의 최종 목표는 이주, 디아스포라의 확산, 기후변화의 충격, 사회적·기술적 변화의 속도 등 현재와 미래의 과제에 맞서 새로운 다중적 연대를 구축하는 데 있다.


캠퍼스 구조

제17회 베니스비엔날레 국제건축전 기간 동안, 미래학교는 자르디니에 물리적 캠퍼스의 형태로, 전시, 워크숍, 설치, 대화 프로그램 등을 개최한다. 여기에 주요 커미션 시리즈를 통해 음향과 움직임, 음식과 음료를 비롯해 모든 참가자를 위한 약속문까지 더해진다. 결과적으로 이곳 베니스 캠퍼스는 세계 곳곳의 미래학교 캠퍼스와 새로운 디지털 환경인 미래학교 온라인과 연결된다.
분과를 가로질러 모든 형태의 상호 참여를 육성한다는 목표는 한국관 현장의 유연한 활용 양상에서도 드러난다. 열린 주방, 원형 라운지, 그리고 한국의 전통 수제 종이인 한지로 만들어진 휴식 공간 등이 편안한 가정집을 연상시키며 배움과 생활의 경계를 부드럽게 해소하는 것을 볼 수 있다.
이러한 점은 미래학교 온라인을 움직이는 동력이기도 하다. 미래학교 온라인은 정보 네트워킹과 진행 중인 협업 과정을 촉진하는 아카이브이자 능동적인 아키텍처이다. 여행과 밀접 대면이 까다로운 시기, 미래학교 온라인은 기술이 인류의 시급한 과제에 접근하는 전 지구적인 협업을 어떻게 뒷받침할 수 있는지 보여준다.


프로그래밍과 커리큘럼

참여 건축가, 교육자, 예술가, 이론가, 운동가들과 함께 비엔날레 기간 동안, 진행될 미래학교의 여러 이벤트를 통해 방문객들은 모두 기존의 배움을 내려놓고 다시금 배우는 과정에 동참하게 된다. 따라서 이러한 이벤트는 점차 성장하고 변화하는 전체 전시의 일환으로 기록되어 송출된다.
미래학교는 물리적 형태와 가상의 형태를 아울러 50여 가지 이상의 프로그램을 제공하며, 도시 환경 냉각에서 학교의 미래학, 혁신적인 공간 개입, 통합의 공간으로서의 경계 등에 이르는 이슈들을 탐색한다. 이러한 커리큘럼은 2020년 여름 서울에서 몇 가지 예비 프로그램으로 출범했던 미래학교 첫 학업 주기의 핵심을 이룬다. 2021년 건축 비엔날레 기간에 열릴 디자인 스튜디오, 강의, 세미나, 패널 토론, 전시 및 기타 교육적 개입 등의 프로그램은 이후 다시 서울에서의 마지막 ‘학기’로 마무리된다. 그간 생성된 아카이브를 더욱 포괄적으로 탐구함으로써 한국은 물론 세계적으로 더욱 혁신적인 프로그램 발전에 기여할 것이다.

공간구상

열린 캠퍼스

집, 우물, 정원으로 이루어진 회합, 배움, 휴식과 명상을 위한 공유공간. 이것이 한국관에 자리 잡을 미래학교의 근본 구상이었다. 한국관은 소비의 공간이 아닌 생활, 교류, 토론을 위한 공간인 것이다.
한국관은 베니스 비엔날레 자르디니 공원에 세워진 독특한 구조물이다. 건축가 김석철과 프랑코 만쿠조의 설계로 1994~1995년에 지어진 이 건물에서 유일하게 영구적인 부분은 기존의 벽돌조적 공중화장실뿐이다. 건물의 나머지 부분은 임시 구조물로 여겨지며, 부지의 큼지막한 나무들 사이로 지어졌다. 다시 말해, 일부 큐레이터들이 원할 만한 곧게 뻗은 벽에 채광이 조절되는 네모반듯한 박스 형태가 아니라는 뜻이다. 대신에 유리 벽과 의외의 곡선으로 이뤄진 햇빛이 잘 드는 투명한 건물이다.
미래학교는 파빌리온이 탄생한 본래 의도를 받아들여 탄생의 숨겨진 이야기를 드러냄과 동시에, 파빌리온 건축 특성의 모든 잠재력과 우수함을 새로운 유형의 학교를 통해 탐색하려 한다. 파빌리온의 개방성은 미래학교의 가장 큰 자산이 되어, 파빌리온 실내를 벽 너머 자르디니 정원과 연결하고 회합 장소로서의 학교 캠퍼스 분위기를 연출한다.
이러한 비전은 미래학교의 공간디자인 팀인 송률과 크리스티안 슈바이처로 구성된 수파 아키텍트와의 긴밀한 협력으로 구현되었다. 파빌리온 중앙의 벽돌로 된 사각 공간은 수제한지 벽으로 이루어진 전통 한옥 스타일로 탈바꿈한다. 조경 건축가 김아연이 제작한 갈대로 만든 원형 카펫은 회합의 상징적 공간을 만들며, 건물의 기존 배관을 이용해 설치한 작은 주방은 참가자들이 방문객에게 제주 옹기에 담은 차와 음료를 대접할 수 있도록 한다. 이전까지 비엔날레 건축전에 이용된 적 없었던 옥상은 ‘큐레이터 연합 ’ 기획의 일환으로 공용 공간이 된다. 전시, 워크숍 결과물 등은 ‘미래학교 약속문’과 나란히 A4 용지 형태로 물결 모양의 ‘프로세스 벽면’을 가로지르고, TV 스크린들은 미디어 전시를 위한 플랫폼이 된다. 이러한 물리적 공간들은 미래학교의 가상 공간인 온라인 플랫폼과 보완 관계에 있다. 불가분의 두 공간은 서로에게 콘텐츠와 콘텍스트를 제공한다.
미래학교가 다뤄야 할 현안 중 가장 시급한 과제인 기후 위기와 함께, 물리적 공간인 파빌리온이 미칠 환경적 영향을 최소화하는 전략 추구 역시 중요했다. 어떤 부분이든 기존의 것을 재사용하여 새로운 자재 운송과 전시 종료 후 폐기물을 최소화할 수 있는 디자인이 필요했다.
이러한 포부는 한국의 전시추진단, 이곳을 지난 10년 이상 돌보았던 베니스 한국관 관리인들, 그리고 베니스 현지 시공사와의 협업으로 실현되었다. 이처럼 공동의 목표를 위해 지식과 전문 기술을 효율적으로 주고받은 과정은 미래학교 프로그래밍 전체를 관통하는 정신과 맥을 같이 한다.


미래학교 생성대화

다면적 접근: 어떻게 함께 살아갈 것인가?


미래학교의 생성대화는 프로그램 전반의 핵심으로, 미래학교의 중심이 되는 다양한 주제들에 대한 탐구적이고 과정 지향적인 참여의 기회를 제공한다. 각각의 대화 형태와 방향은 유연하며 참가자들에 의해 정해진다.
미래학교 안에서 ‘생성대화’라는 용어는 다양한 그룹이 열린 대화를 위해 모여 참가자와 관객이 동등하게 새로운 생각, 행동, 사유의 연쇄를 함께 생성하는 계획된 순간을 말한다. 생성대화는 위기의 시대에 앞으로 나아갈 길을 찾기 위한 도구, 즉 긍정적 행동을 위해 사람들을 한데 불러 모으는 수단인 셈이다.
미래학교 생성대화는 서면역사보다 앞선 전통에 기반한다. 함께 모여 경청하고 각자의 생각과 관점을 교환하는 등의 단순한 행동은 구술, 수사적 토론, 스승-제자 식의 상호작용 등을 통해 인류의 지식을 수천 년 동안 발전시켜왔다.
이러한 전통은 한국에 강하게 남아 있다. 한국에 흔한 평상은 땅 위로 높인 모듈식 단 형태의 가구로 공동체가 모이는 곳을 가리킨다. 이러한 정신을 바탕으로, 미래학교 캠퍼스는 여러 생성대화들을 한국관 중앙에 펼쳐진 김아연 작가의 원형 카펫에서 주최할 예정이다. 동시에 전시 참가자 모두가 공동으로 만들어 갈 미래학교 온라인 역시 또 하나의 적극적인 토론의 장을 제공하고, 지난 생성대화 아카이브를 열어 인터넷 그리고 세계와 공유할 것이다.

서울 the Transparent Hall, Historical Hall, and Cylinder Hall. The Korean pavilion was in the spotlight from the first year of its opening as artist Jheon Soo-Cheon received an honourable mention at the 46th International Art Exhibition of the Venice Biennale in 1995, followed by two consecutive special mentions for artists Ik-Joong Kang at the 47th International Art Exhibition in 1997 and Lee Bul at the 48th Exhibition in 1999. Dedicated and persistent efforts to raise the profile of Korean art and architecture known on the international scene came to fruition when the Korean Pavilion won the prestigious Golden Lion award for best national participation at the 14th International Architecture Exhibition in 2014. Arts Council Korea (ARKO), the commissioner of the Korean pavilion, has been responsible for the operation of the pavilion since its opening. ARKO, also known as Arts Council Korea, is an organisation dedicated to supporting Korean arts and culture nationally and internationally. It was established with the aim of making the arts accessible to everyone, based on the belief that art has the power to transform lives. It promotes and subsidises projects and activities that promote culture and the arts. ARKO, under the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, advocates for the creation and enjoyment of all forms of art.

베니스비엔날레 한국관 및 한국문화예술위원회 소개
베니스비엔날레 한국관은 자르디니 내 26번째 국가관으로 1995년 건립되어 한국미술 세계화에 막을 올렸다. 지상 1층, 연면적 242.6㎡ 규모로 트랜스패런트홀, 히스토리컬홀, 실린더홀의 3개 전시장으로 구성된 한국관은 1995년 개관 첫 해인 제 46회 국제미술전에 전수천 작가의 특별상 수상을 시작으로 1997년 제 47회 국제미술전에서는 강익중 작가가, 1999년 제 48회 국제미술전에서는 이불 작가가 같은 상을 수상하면서 연속 3회 국제미술전 특별상 수상국으로 주목을 받았다. 그 이후 한국관은 꾸준히 한국의 미술과 건축의 흐름을 국제무대에 알리는 노력을 했으며 2014년 제14회 건축전에서는 베니스비엔날레 한국관 최고 영예인 황금사자상을 수상했다. 한국관의 커미셔너인 한국문화예술위원회는 개관부터 한국관 운영을 담당하고 있는 우리나라 대표 문화예술 지원기구로, 훌륭한 예술이 우리 모두의 삶을 변화시키는 힘을 가지고 있다는 믿음으로 문화예술진흥을 위한 사업과 활동을 지원함으로써 모든 이가 창조의 기쁨을 공유하고 가치 있는 삶을 누리게 하는 것을 목적으로 설립되었다. 문화체육관광부 산하 기관인 한국문화예술위원회는 2,279억원, 2,618개 규모(2018년도 기준)로 한국의 순수예술 창작 및 향유를 지원하고 있다.
