Evan Cantu-Hertzler Junior Varsity Head Coach, evancantuhertzler@tatnall.orgOur Athletic Department has been receiving updates over the past month from the DIAA regarding COVID-19. We are continually monitoring the ever-changing regulations and how they impact this year s athletic schedules. We hope this document will provide you with a better understanding of the current regulations and how we will function within them. The following three areas are addressed below: Pre-Physical Evaluation form that is being used this school year The pre-season plan for on campus this fall. The rationale behind the athletic participation link.Pre-Physical Evaluation Form for This School Year The DIAA board approved a new regulation, entitled 10.0, at their July meeting. One of the changes within regulation 10.0 involves thePre-PhysicalEvaluation(PPE) form. Each student in grades 6-12 is required to complete this form. The DIAA has been mindful of the accessibility to physicians in order to support our student-athletes within the state. We have listed the key changes below for you to reference along with a quick link to the DIAA PPE forms. Students that are entering middle school (6th grade), or first time participants in athletics as well as students entering (9th grade),ARE REQUIREDto have aNEWPPE, completing all documents provided in the link below, before athletic participation. This document must be dated on/after April 1, 2020. Students returning to Tatnall and currently in grades 7, 8, 10, 11, and 12 will be allowed to use their 2019-20 physical this fall; however, students will need to have a new physical on file before the start of the winter season. All Returning Students listed in the above bullet point must still completeSupplemental Forms (new history, page 3) and medical card (page 5). These MUST be completed before any athletic participation. Tatnall requires all families to upload their forms directly to Magnus Health due to COVID-19.Changes to 2-sportAthletic RequirementTatnall will be waiving the 2-sportathletic requirementfor the 2020-2021 academic year;however, we are strongly encouraging students to participate in athletics. We realize that most of our students signed up this past April for their sports during the scheduling process. With this being said and the lessening of the athletic requirement, we as a school need to gauge our students interest for the 2020-2021 school year. We are asking each student to fill out his/her athletic interest by completing and submitting the google form linkedhereto register athletic participation choices by Monday, August 31.Please note that we are asking students to use their email address for tracking purposes. In closing, please know that safety will always be our number one priority as we move through the fall months. Please let me know if you have any questions. I can be reached at (302) 892-4311 orpatrickjones@tatnall.org.Sincerely,Patrick JonesDirector of Athletics Dear Tatnall Families, August 7, 2020The Delaware Interscholastic Athletic Association Board met yesterday to discuss athletic competition seasons for the 2020-2021 academic year. The Board voted to postpone the fall season and restructure the athletic seasons. Winter sports will start in December, followed by fall season sports beginning in mid-February, and then we will end the academic year with spring sports starting in April. This decision means that the fall preseason, which was supposed to start on August 17, has been postponed. We are still waiting on the specific start dates for each season. We understand that the DIAA board will be voting on the start dates at their September meeting. The Tatnall athletic department with guidance from the Delaware Division of Public Health and Delaware Interscholastic Athletic Association will be creating a plan for a safe return to play in the next couple of weeks. We are dedicated to providing our students and their families with a safe re-entry into scholastic athletics. Please let me know if you have any questions. I can be reached at (302) 892-4311 or patrickjones@tatnall.org.Sincerely,Patrick JonesDirector of Athletics Dear 2020-21 Middle and Upper School Families,(Middle School Families please scroll down the document for information)The past 10 weeks have been challenging. We have learned a lot about ourselves, our community, and our school. We first want to thank our senior class for their contributions to the Tatnall community. We wish them well as they begin this new chapter in their lives. At this time the state of Delaware does not allow us to open the campus up for summer workouts. We hope to receive updates in the near future as to when activities are able to begin (please see below). The safety of each student/adult will always be the most important factor regarding our preparations and delivery of services. At this time, we DO NOT have any information regarding an opening date for athletics. We continue to monitor the Governor s recommendations with respect to reopening and the resumption of athletics for the fall. We have been in constant communication with the DIAA as well as the NFHS. Once we have received a date from the Governor regarding the reopening of high school athletics with clear recommendations and guidelines, we will begin implementing our safe return to practice and play. The information below is subject to change but is a tentative guideline should we be allowed to resume athletics. We will continue to provide updates as they become available. If you have specific questions, we ask that you contact the head coach listed in the matrix. 2020 Fall Upper School Sports Practice Schedule (Tentative)We have received guidance from DIAA on the requirements for athletic physicals for the 20-21 school year. We do recommend that you contact your physician ASAP regarding the scheduling of appointments. If you are a returning student (This does not pertain to 6th and 9th graders) you have an extension to complete the 20-21 PPE. You will need to complete 2020-2021 PPE Form by the end of the fall season and prior to the start of the winter season in order to continue being eligible to participate. Please note that you will still need to turn in page 2( History Form) and 4 ( Athlete Medical Card) prior to the start of fall preseason. The entire explanation from DIAA is below. We have attached a quick link regarding the updated forms that you will need to use (Important Documents Section).2020-2021 DIAA ATHLETIC PHYSICAL AND CONSENT FORMS These forms MUST be utilized when completing required DIAA forms for the 2020-21 athletic season. Each year, the DIAA will utilize this cover letter to update providers on any important changes and important dates. The DIAA Sports Medicine Advisory Committee recommends that the required forms be completed by the student athlete s primary care provider (medical home) to ensure continuity of medical care. Key Changes for 2020-2021: *This packet has been updated based upon new guidelines by the American Academy of Pediatrics Pre-Participation Evaluation (PPE) 5th Edition. * There is now a checkbox on page 1 for immunizations that should be checked indicating that immunizations are attached. * Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and concerns regarding access, returning same-school student-athletes that had a valid 2019-2020 pre-participation physical may not be required to have a PPE until the End of the Fall Season - prior to the start of the winter season. This means a physical that was good for the 2019- 2020 season will be good for the start of the 2020-2021 season. * However, a new History Form (p2) and medical card (p4), MUST be completed for all athletes, and based on review of the forms, the school s qualified healthcare provider will determine if a physical and evaluation by the student s primary care provider is required prior to participation. For returning athletes, when completing the history form, please make sure to only answer yes if there are new issues since you were last cleared for participation/ last year s valid PPE. * Students who have not had a DIAA PPE such as students entering middle school, students who are first time participants in athletics, and out-of-state transfers, ARE required to have a PPE prior to athletic participation. All students entering high school sports(may be 8th or 9th grade) ARE required to have a PPE prior to athletic participation. Therefore, parents and guardians must complete and submit pages 1 through 4, including a physician s examination (pg3), prior to any participation. Dates for you to mark:Summer Workouts:We will again offer all Tatnall students in the 9th-12th grade the opportunity to have supervised workouts. Outdoor conditioning on campus. These will be fully supervised activities by the Tatnall coaches. We ask that you do not come on campus on your own. We certainly want to reiterate these plans are subject to change due to COVID-19 and the Governor s guidelines for the state of Delaware. The philosophy regarding middle school athletics is one of instruction and participation. Every effort will be made to engage athletes based upon safety, attitude, awareness, skill, and knowledge regarding the particular sport. We do expect all students to attend all practices/contests. Players develop and learn from both practice as well as game situations. Cooperation with coaches and referees on and off the field are important foundational skills. One of the most important goals for a coach is to help each and every individual reach their potential while at the same time strive to support the entire team in their effort to demonstrate growth and success. We have put together a brief description of contacts and equipment required for each sport we offer in the fall. Tatnall School achieves their 5th in a row DIAA Sportsmanship Award... 2015,2016,2017,2018 and 2019. Congrats to all the students and coaches!!!!The school year is off and most of our upper school programs have played at least 2 games. The middle school will open up next week with games. This website does an excellent job of managing the game schedules, rosters and results. This website communicates with all of the DIAA schools which allows for changes to be done instantly between schools. We will post our highlights and weekly recipients for Athlete of the Week in this section. The philosophy behind participation in our athletic program is to teach life-long values and ethics that can best be practiced and experienced in an athletic environment. The ability to work in a group setting on a team as well as experiencing the emotions of winning and losing with peers are life-lessons. Most individuals will never remember the scores of games and contests, but they will remember the sacrifices made and the individual and team accomplishments achieved. I see this every year when our alumni come back and share stories with each other. I truly feel that our small school environment allows students to step onto athletic teams and be major contributors and work their way up to leadership roles by their senior year. In addition, the idea of supporting each other and being willing to sacrifice for someone else is experienced daily at Tatnall.
