First responders have stood on the frontlines during this crisis, putting their lives in danger to protect others. We also realise that people are suffering more silently during this crisis, their challenges no less real than any others. Their lives turned upside down. People are struggling to keep a hold on their mental health, and sadly, there will be instances we do not hear about until it is too late.Knowing the effects of this crisis – the stress, the isolation, the loneliness – we realise that before long it is going to harm our neighbours , our friends , and our families , mental health on a large scale. We do not need to stand idly by and wait for this to happen. There are preventive measures that we can take. Confiding in someone about our worries and fears can strengthen our relationships and fight off the mental health challenges that can otherwise follow the lockdowns that have characterised this crisis. At a time when we are feeling overwhelmed, friendships can offset the body s stress response and sustain our ability to withstand the uncertainty.Cycle Against Suicide is encouraging people to Buddy Up and Make the Call . By caring and sharing a little of our time during this difficult period, not only are we supporting and inspiring each other, we are cultivating healthier minds by pushing back against the sort of mental health challenges that can reveal themselves and at times turn tragic. BUDDY UP and Make the Call connects directly to our overall mission at Cycle Against Suicide, making this moment an important one for us as we continue to foster better mental health in all. By making that simple call to others, checking that they are OK, we can add a little relief, a little compassion, to our long days.Seize the moment.
