Find out more Human Rights Council (HRC) The Human Rights Council (HRC) is the key intergovernmental body within the United Nations system responsible for the promotion and protection of all human rights around the globe. AWID works with partners to share key knowledge, convene civil society dialogues and events, and influence negotiations and outcomes of the session. Confronting Extractivism & Corporate Power Women human rights defenders (WHRDs) worldwide defend their lands, livelihoods and communities from extractive industries and corporate power. They stand against powerful economic and political interests driving land theft, displacement of communities, loss of livelihoods, and environmental degradation. Women Human Rights Defenders WHRDs are exposed to the same types of risks that all other defenders who defend human rights, communities, and the environment face. However, they are also exposed to gender-based violence and gender-specific risks because they challenge existing gender norms within their communities and societies. Memory as Resistance: A Tribute to feminist activists who changed our world AWID’s Tribute is an art exhibition honouring featuring feminists, women’s rights and social justice activists from around the world who are no longer with us.
