Monday, August 27, 2012 THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING ASTONISHED

During this workshop we will learn Ericksons naturalistic techniques to
capture those physical and emotional cues that evoke our best therapeutic trance/ learning statelearn to empathically listen for, and skillfully use, those vocal mannerisms and gestures that engage individuals curiously entranced state of mindlearn how to create and use non-manipulative, empathetic strategies, those that honor each person's unique hypnotic learning style andcreate learning tasks for new ways to act authentically from our truest selves with confidence and integrity, making the ordinary astonishing and the astonishing ordinary.Waking and sleeping are certain kinds of attention. Between these two exists our hypnotic form of attention, an attention which meets the world by fascination, surprised wonderment and entrancing curiosity. These make up the character of our most intimate learning moments.

Neuroscientists tell us that our waking attention, Beta brain wave frequency, rapidly takes in /gives out information and that our sleeping attention, Alpha-Theta brain wave frequency, is inwardly focused and is dreamlike, and that our hypnotic attention is a mix of Beta and Alpha frequencies. James Braid coined the term hypnosis, which comes from the Greek word for sleep, writing that hypnotism was a state of physical relaxation induced by mental concentration. Each of the three states possesses its own unique way of concentrating and understanding the world. Through special moments of hypnotic learning attention, we connect to the world through our deepest selves, thereby bonding uniquely with the life around us.

Through hypnotic connection with the world in these moments of attention, Dr. Milton Erickson developed his remarkable hypnotic techniques for therapeutic change and the discovery of ones true passion in life.
Drawing on Ericksons pioneering work, we will learn new ways to use our own hypnotic learning state to resolve personal issues, to discover our true life purpose and direction, and how to bring that purpose into daily practice. No comments: Friday, August 10, 2012 Is this Toy Town? Drivers astonished after being confronted by bridge that looks like it is made of LEGOIt's enough to stop any unsuspecting driver in their tracks.
Suspended above a road in Wuppertal, Germany, a bridge that looks like it's made entirely of Lego bricks.

There's an innocent explanation to the brightly-coloured structure, of course - it's the handiwork of street artist called Megx, Germany's answer to Banksy.

Drivers stop and stare at the finished 'Lego' bridge in Wuppertal, Germany

The eye-catching site is actually the work of street artist Megx - real name Martin Heuwold - who decided to transform the disused railway bridge
Megx - whose real name is Martin Heuwold, 35 - sought out permission to transform the disused railway bridge.
The bridge forms part of the line that once connected Düsseldorf and Dortmund.
The section has been closed since 1999 and is now a pedestrian walkway and cycle path.
After council chiefs gave him the all clear, Megx spent four weeks painstakingly painting the once-grey structure green, blue, yellow and red.
He covered the 250 square feet using a cherry picker truck.

Megx specialises in transforming drab, grey walls and buildings with colourful murals.
His previous work includes a giant animal mural at Cologne zoo.

He has also been recruited by local authorities to breathe new life into empty shops and boarded-up public toilets, by decorating them with colourful designs.

Work in progress: Almost half done, this photo shows how Megx transformed a dull, grey bridge into a fun and eye-catching attraction

Don't look down: The artist spent four weeks suspended in a cherry picker painstakingly covering every inch of the bridge

Job done: Drivers in Wuppertal now go out of their way to pass under the 'Lego' bridge

No comments: Wednesday, July 25, 2012 Stunned, Astounded and Astonished
stun: c.1300, to daze or render unconscious (from a blow, powerful emotion, etc.), probably aphetic of O.Fr. estoner to stun
astound: 1600, from M.E. astouned, astoned (c.1300), pp. of astonien to stun
astonish: 1340, astonien, from O.Fr. estoner to stun, from V.L. *extonare, from L. ex- out + tonare to thunder; so, lit. to leave someone thunderstruck.
Although all three words derive from the same source, each has a different connotation in English.
Stun seems to carry the strongest emotional punch, perhaps because it has only one syllable, but also because it has a literal meaning. The other two words are always used figuratively. (Ive never seen the word astonish used to describe the effect of a literal lightning strike.)

Astound and astonish suggest amazement, but the surprise engendered is not necessarily accompanied by the emotional pain suggested by the word stun.
He was astounded by the bureaucrats stupidity.
They were astonished by the magicians illusions.
He was stunned by the unexpected death of his wife.

The following headlines and captions from the web got me thinking about these words:
Tendulkar stunned at his wax likeness
Israel stunned at US firmness on freezing settlements
Richard Dreyfuss Stunned at Natashas Accident
Twilights Lefevre stunned at loss of role
Crowds Stunned at Jacksons Death
What first caught my attention was the use of the preposition at after stun instead of the usual by.
The use of at instead of by has the effect of distancing the emotion. The metaphor is one of being hit over the head. One isnt stunned at a hammer, but stunned by a hammer. One is stunned by bad news, not at it.

My second observation was that in at least two of the headlines, either astounded or astonished would have been the more appropriate choice. As a general rule, Id save the word stun for a truly tragic context and use astound and astonish to convey extreme surprise.

As for the use of stunning in inappropriate contexts, heres what David Auburn has to say in the Oxford American Writers Thesaurus (p. 861):
stunning is probably the most overused synonym for very good, especially in movie ads and book blurbs . . . Use of the word in this context has become not only an empty cliché, but also annoyingly counter intuitive: wouldnt you be more likely to feel stunned by something bad than by something good?
