RESEARCH IN PRACTICEIn order to provide practical production experiences for students this semester, the Department of Theatre and Drama is offering four “Research in Practice” courses. Led by faculty instructors, these courses will stretch students as they explore research projects in the faculties area of specialty. These courses embrace a nimble approach to theatrical production and performance. Each course will determine the final mode of presentation as a class, based on student interest and current safety requirements. Each of these courses requires instructor consent, so please contact the instructor at the e-mail address listed to get permission to enroll.Click on the titles below for full course descriptions, instructors, meeting times, and method of instruction.RESEARCH IN PRACTICE COURSESTheatre 360 (section 1): Devising America (2020): Theater Collaboration towards a New NationTheatre 360 (section 2): Voice through StorytellingTheatre 360 (section 3): Mysterious Tales of the YokaiTheatre 661 (section 1): Lost in Isolation- An Interactive Storytelling EnvironmentCANCELLATION OF UNIVERSITY THEATRE 2020-2021 SEASONWith continued concerns being caused by COVID19 and its spread, a priority for the Department of Theatre and Drama/University Theatre is the health and safety of our students, staff, artists, and patrons. Each production we put on stage requires several months of advance preparation—set and costume builds, rehearsals, light hangs—almost none of which can be done remotely. Until we can ensure the safety of those entering our spaces, we will not be able to bring plays to our stages. It is for these reasons that with a heavy heart I must announce the cancellation of University Theatre’s 2020-21 season. This does not mean that creative activities have ceased within the Theatre Department or that our students are not going to be perfecting their performing and creative skills. We have been using a new catch phrase within the department: “We have to remain nimble.” It is hoped that some of this new energy will blossom in the form of online offerings from class and student projects. We will definitely let you know about these offerings as they come to fruition. The art of theater is not just a performance on a stage. It is not meant to be experienced or performed in isolation. It is, at its heart, an act of sharing and community: a collective experience. In other words, theater cannot exist without an audience, without its community. All of you are members of the UT community. To use a Hawaiian term, you are our ‘ohana. Students, faculty, staff, our audience members, are all our family. We ask for your understanding and continuing support. Until we can gather again, stay healthy and safe and we cannot wait to share the experience of live theater with you once again.Ki otsukete kudasai and Aloha,David FurumotoArtistic Director for University TheatreQuestions and concerns may be addressed to publicity@theatre.wisc.eduEventsSeptemberSeptember 15Courageous Coaching Conversations (Online)This event is brought to you by PLACE | Professional Learning and Community Education. place.education.wisc.edu4:00 PM, OnlineSeptember 15Masters in Learning Analytics WebinarInformational session to learn about the program5:00 PMSeptember 26Teaching About the 2020 Elections (Online)This event is brought to you by PLACE | Professional Learning and Community Education. place.education.wisc.edu9:00 AM, OnlineMore events More NEWSKelly, Skloot Panelists for the Alliance for Jewish Theatre s September WebinarFurumoto featured in Goodly Frame Theatre s Zoom Fest Production of HAIKUDr. Baron Kelly Named to Harold Pinter Review BoardLongtime Theatre Professor John Tolch passes awayDr. Baron Kelly Joins UW-Madison Department of Theatre and DramaWelcome New Faculty Members Neil Mills and Megan ReillyShasparay Lighteard named one of UW s 2020 Notable Grads COOKIE NOTICE.
