I recognize that I am just one person (and, unfortunately, not a superhero), therefore, I cannot expect myself to be the perfect teacher that meets all my students' needs all the time. However, I am encouraged by the fact that I teach language arts tofifth through eighth graders and consequently have four years with students to meet as many of their needs as I can.Looking ahead to my second year, I have decided to focus my year on better meeting the needs of my special education students. I am in the process of collaborating with the middle school social studies teacher and special educator at my school to design an 8th grade unit around the historical novel My Brother Sam is Deadby James Lincoln Collier and Christopher Collier. Our goal is to create a unit that makes the rigorous demands of the Common Core State Standards (particularly the idea of reading and comprehending a complex text) accessible to our special education students.
My Brother Sam is Deadwas a Newbery Honor book in 1975, and it tells the story of young Tim Meeker in the 1770s who is torn between the loyalist father he respects and the Patriot brother he admires. Although with a Lexile score of 770, this book falls under the grades 4-5 Common Core text complexity band. However, because of the unfamiliar historical context, antiquated and time period specific vocabulary, and sudden shifts in time (there a number of flash-forwards), this novel offers just the right amount of complexity for my 8th grade readers-- particularly since this class struggles to connect with or enjoy historical fiction.
Although this is an interdisciplinary unit between my language arts class and the social studies class, I do not feel that I have the historical background in Colonial America or the Revolutionary War to really bring this subject to life for my students. I do not want to rely on the social studies teacher to be the sole provider of the background knowledge students will bring to their reading of this text. Therefore, I have chosen to create my text set around the Revolutionary War, which is the time period our novel is set in. All the texts chosen for this text set will tie into My Brother Sam is Dead or will supplement the social studies curriculum. Because we are really focusing on supporting special education students in this unit and making sure they are able to keep up with the rigorous demands of the Common Core State Standards, I tried to focus most of my text set on a wide range of materials and strategies that would benefit my special education students. While I recognize that the majority of my students do not qualify for special education services, I know that the strategies put in place to support those students who do qualify often end up benefitting all students in the long run, which is why I am excited to use this text set in my class this year.
I know it will be an amazing resource for our unit, and I am thrilled about sharing it will my colleagues!
