Training: Since 1971, the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology has certified physicians in the subspecialty of Gynecologic Oncology. These specialists undergo a minimum of three years additional training in all aspects of diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up related to reproductive tract cancers. Available scientific reports indicate that subspecialty care is associated with improved survival and fewer treatment-related complications. Gynecologic Oncologists are the physicians most experienced in the nuances of reproductive tract cancer surgery and are experienced in the selection and sequencing of treatment modalities. This specific training can minimize the chance for under-treatment (failure to control cancer) or over-treatment (avoiding expense and complications) which can make the difference between mere survival and a return to good health.
