The Center for Research on Interface Structures and Phenomena (CRISP) explores the properties and potential applications of the surfaces of materials and the interfaces between materials (the border region where two materials come into contact). As the spatial dimensions of electronic, magnetic, and mechanical devices are made ever smaller, their performance is increasingly dominated by surfaces and interfaces. We investigate the transition between bulk and interfacial behavior, as well as the intrinsic properties of surfaces and interfaces, with the goal of discovering new phenomena: new kinds of electronic, mechanical, thermo-plastic, magnetic, chemical, catalytic, and optical behavior, as well as new ways to control and utilize them. We are currently focusing on two broad classes of materials: crystalline metal oxides and bulk metallic glasses.
