The conical shelterknown as wigwam has been used by the Eastern WoodlandIndians for millennia. The wigwam was a pole framse coveredwith large sheets of birch bark. When tribes such as the Sioux,Arapaho and Cheyenne moved into the Great Plains, they had to adapt the wigwam to theirnew way of life. Birch bark were not longer available and werereplaced with buffalo hides sewn together. Smoke flaps were alsoadded to keep the wind from blowing into their tipis. The tipi wasa comfortable shelter. It could be taken down quickly and packedon a travois, to be put up again elsewhere in a short time.The traditional tipi is not a true cone, it is tilted, leaningback a little. Its floor plan is shaped like an egg,longer from the back to the door.The location of fireplace is off-center, closer to the door,leaving more useable space at the back of the lodge. There are severalknown tipi styles, some are based on a 3-pole foundation, others have a4-pole foundation.Choose each separately to fit your needs- A teepee cover, often called tarp.
