This week, the Texas House took the next step in passing major health care reform bills, passing House Bill 18 that creates a prescription drug savings program for many uninsured and underinsured Texans. This legislation, known as The Texas Cares Act, is a great victory for Texas as we take action to ensure that those without healthcare coverage are not forced to go without their prescribed medication, lowering costs for nearly 3 million Texans. Today, on the floor of the Texas House, we engaged in serious and crucial debate on legislation affecting our Second Amendment rights. Today, I voted for — and the House passed — House Bill 1927, aka the Firearm Carry Act of 2021. This legislation allows for permitless carry, protections for lawful gun owners, and simple signage provisions for businesses and property owners. While I understand that some people have divergent and passionate viewpoints on this important issue, this legislation is a thoughtful and comprehensive policy advanced with the support of a strong majority of my constituents. Now, it is in the hands of the Texas Senate as this legislation continues its way through the legislative process. Today, I had a chance to catch up with former Texas Governor Rick Perry to discuss current legislation at the Capitol. Last week, Governor Perry voiced his support for House Bill 20: the Damon Allen Act, a bill that I have authored that would reform Texas' bail system.
