Facts & Infos

Facts & Infos of race-slope

Spinel

What makes Spinel jump difficult is that athletes have to leap into the steepest section of the course – a 56% grade – and they have to change direction virtually mid-air to the right leading into a compression.

Moro

The "Saut dl Moro", a 40-meter-long jump which takes skiers into the second compression.

Sochers

The Sochers jump has skiers 15 to 20 meters in the air. It is followed by a flat, yet intense, left-right-left gate combination ending at the 1st Mauer ("Wall"). Skiers jump approximately 35 meters directly to the 1st Mauer and have to sway to the right to the 2nd Mauer. The jump on the 2nd Mauer contemporaneously serves as the entry into the flat section leading to the 1st Camel Hump. Athletes reach a top speed of 130 km/h.

Camel Humps

The Camel Humps represent the most spectacular section of the Saslong. They were named by the late and former Austrian FIS TD Sepp Sulzberger. Uli Spiess from Austria was the first athlete to attempt and succeed in jumping all three Humps at the same time instead of taking each jump separately. Since Spiess' premiere, skiers today mostly absorb the first jump (a.k.a. "Girardelli Line") and leap from the second over the third. The record jump belongs to Austrian skier Michael Walchhofer who leaped 88 meters reaching a height of 4-5 meters in 2003.

Ciaslat

Ciaslat with its corrugated ripples and bumps is where the race is often decided. In this technically very demanding section of the course racers face overall 17 different ripples.

Nucia

Skiers will take the Nucia jump into the final schuss following the exit from Ciaslat.

Tunnel

The jump owes its name to the new tunnel that runs below the Final schuss and is part of the new street by-passing St.Christina which was opened in 2009.

Commenting

Commenting the Saslong

Lasse Kjius - NOR

Winner downhill 1998 and Super-G 2003

I like the Saslong very much and I enjoy to race down the Ciaslat "washboard". It's a continuous challenge. (2003)

Didier Cuche - SUI

Winner Super G 2007

The magic of the Saslong caught me at once. I was particularly impressed by the speed and the many jumps. It was on the Saslong I gained my first World Cup points. (2004)

Kristian Ghedina - ITA

Winner downhill 1996, 1998, 1998, 2001

The Saslong is one of my favorite slopes. It is amongst those courses I know best since it was here that I started my World Cup career. I like the Saslong because of its fast interchange of technical and fast passages.

Hermann Maier - AUT

2nd Super G 2004

On the Saslong I like, in particular, the big "S" right after the start and the walls, of course. Then the Camel Humps, naturally. They would determine the outcome of the race. (2001)

Kietil Andre Aamodt - NOR

3rd downhill 2001

I enjoy racing down the Saslong. You need a fast ski, especially in the first part of the upper section. Actually, there are so many wonderful passages that every year I am eagerly looking forward to this classic event. (2003)

Daron Rahlves - USA

4th Super G 2003

The start on the Saslong is great as it enables you to achieve high speed fast. Then, there are the Camel Humps which you have to "fly" over in order to reach the Ciaslat meadows. It's a breath-taking event. (2004)

Fritz Strobl - AUT

3rd downhill 2006

The Saslong is a true gem! The course is difficult, fast and offers significant challenges such as the Camel Humps and also Ciaslat. The Saslong really has everything it takes to be a great Downhill run. (2005)

Conradin Cathomen - SUI

Winner downhill 1982

I won this race in 1982. But this is not the only reason why this is my favorite slope. I have amazing memories when I think back at the Camel Humps, the crazy waves on the Ciaslat which was a single ice plate back then. It was unbelievable. (2004)

Atle Skaardal - NOR

Winner downhill 1990

The Saslong is very interesting because its difficulties are spaced from start to finish. The jumps, the steep "walls" at Sochers, icy and very fast, the never-ending jump over the Camel Humps and then the technical difficulties at Ciaslat. It is a downhill having a mix of everything. (2004)
