The Danish Road Directorate is part of the Danish Transport Ministry. The directorate promotes an integrated road and transport system and is responsible for a portfolio of around 4.000 km of state-owned roads that carry around 45 % of the entire road traffic in the country.

The main purpose of the Cycle Superhighways is to create better conditions for commuter cyclists, and thus encourage more people to choose the bike over the car – also over longer distances. It provides improved health and urban environment and less congestion – for the benefit of all road users.
