Description:

President Mark Norris Welcomes you on behalf of the over 1300Compatriots to the Website of the TNSSAR!Welcome to the Tennessee SocietySons of the American RevolutionTNSSAR members can be found across the state within our six Districts comprising 23 active local Chapters. Our Society supports and works closely with the Children of the American Revolution and The Daughters of the American Revolution promoting American Heritage. Our Mission: Perpetuating the stories of patriotism, courage, sacrifice, tragedy, and triumph of the men and women who achieved the independence of the American people in the belief that these stories are universal ones of man's eternal struggle against tyranny, relevant to all time, and will inspire and strengthen each succeeding generation as it too is called upon to defend our freedoms on the battlefield and in our public institutions, including the stories of those brave men and women who came to this Tennessee wilderness with little more than their raw grit and determination and proceeded to claw out a gracious society of which WE are the recipients.Message from the President-ElectCompatriots, the next TWO BOG meetings are scheduled for Saturday October 24, 2020 and Saturday January 23, 2021., both starting at 10:00 am Central Time. These will be held at the Franklin Marriott Hotel located at 700 Cool Springs Blvd., Franklin, TN 37067. Most of you are probably already familiar with this complex. If you plan to arrive on Friday and spend the night, ask for Juanita Neely (615) 261-6100 and tell her that you are with the Tennessee SAR for a special rate. Also, we did not schedule a lunch for these meetings but the hotel has a very good grille adjacent to the lobby.Mark and I look forward to seeing everyone there on Friday night if you are staying and certainly on Saturday for the BOG. Please be aware that it would be a good idea to bring a mask, at least for the October meeting, as we will very likely still be under the Governor's and Mayor's safety mandates. As at our last BOG, temperatures will be taken at the door also. The report schedule, minutes, etc. will be forthcoming in the near future. President's Message 29 AUG 20 Constitution and Citizenship Day 2020Compatriots, We the People... With these words, 233 years ago, on September 17, 1787, the Constitution of the United States was adopted by the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia. Did you know the SAR was instrumental in assuring annual recognition of this event? According to NSSAR Historian General (1960 - 1962) John St. Paul, Jr., One of the great achievements of the SAR was its formal recognition of Constitution Day and its observance throughout the country. The SAR formally adopted a resolution in advocating the day of national recognition in 1917. Today, pursuant to a 1952 Act of Congress, amended in 2004, we are to commemorate the event and promote citizenship on the same day each year. States, counties, cities and towns to make plans for the proper observance of the day and for the complete instruction of citizens in their responsibilities and opportunities as citizens of the United States and of the State and locality in which they reside. As amended, the law now designates this day as Constitution Day and Citizenship Day and adds two new requirements: The first requires every federal agency provide each employee with educational and training materials concerning the Constitution on September 17th. The second requires that each educational institution receiving Federal funds hold a program for students every September 17th. As Compatriots of the Tennessee Society SAR, what can we do to commemorate the event, promote citizenship and secure the Blessings of Liberty ordained in our Constitution? Support our Youth Education Programs: Elementary Poster, Middle School Brochure, High School Knight Essay and Rumbaugh Oration competitions. Special competitions for JROTC cadets and Eagle Scouts. We also look forward to recognizing an outstanding History Teacher annually. Out of 22 TNSSAR Chapters across the state, only 9 currently have Eagle Scout Chairmen. Make sure your Chapter has an active Eagle Scout Committee. Compatriot Austin Seay (EagleScout@tnssar.org) chairs our State Eagle Scout Committee and is working with our chapters to reach Eagle Scouts in our communities. Contact Austin to learn what you can do to encourage and support our Scouts. Compatriot Cliff Kent is working on the elementary school Poster contest (elementaryschoolpostercontest@tnssar.org), and Carl Garret is working on the middle school brochure competition (MiddleSchoolBrochureContest@tnssar.org). Contact them to learn what you can do to assure your community is involved. Support America 250. There is a robust American Revolution Recognition Program with medals and awards promoted by the National SAR (https://www.sar.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/11/250th-Anniversary-Form.pdf). Make sure your Chapter has an active committee working to plan activities to commemorate the 250th Anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 1776. Compatriot Walt Timoschuk chairs our America 250 Committee and is working to assure that we engage in appropriate activities in our chapters and communities. Contact me (president@tnssar.org) or Walt (america250@tnssar.org) for more information about ways you can be involved. As your President, on September 9, I will preside over a naturalization ceremony in Memphis to administer the Oath of United States Citizenship to several hundred lawful immigrants who have successfully completed the program and met the requirements of citizenship. Pocket Constitutions will be provided courtesy of the Isaac Shelby Chapter. On September 11 and 12, I will participate in the Gathering at Sycamore Shoals to commemorate the 240th Anniversary of the Overmountain Men as they prepared to march toward what became the Battle of King s Mountain on October 7, 1780. A big weekend is in store, and each of you is invited to participate (http://www.tnssar.org/uploads/1/3/1/5/131556184/the_240th_anniversary_of_the_gathering_at_sycamore_shoals.pdf). This is a TNSSAR America 250 State Sanctioned Event. Contact Compatriots Tim Massey (OVTALiaison@tnssar.org ) or David Carr (trustee@tnssar.org) for more details. It is up to each of us to secure the Blessings of Liberty by promoting the principles upon which it is premised.Take advantage of your membership in the SAR as a means to that end.Happy Constitution and Citizenship Day!
