Fuller to replace Chief Justice Morrison R. Waite. A graduate of Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine, Fuller also attended Harvard Law School, making him the first Chief Justice to have any formal law school training. Fuller regularly invited the Justices to hold their Conferences in his home instead of the cramped quarters in the U.S. Capitol Building. He served on the Court for 21 years and is credited with beginning one of the Court s most cherished traditions: the judicial handshake. Each Justice shakes hands with each of the other Justices before every Conference or Courtroom session—a total of 36 handshakes.
