As a swimmer, he had an incredible work ethic and his signature race, the 200 fly, truly represents his toughness. In honor of his memory, the Carsten family is establishing the Ian Carsten Scholarship Fund. This fund will be used to provide yearly scholarships to the graduating high school seniors (both male and female) with the fastest 200 butterfly time. The winner will be announced in July of each year. For those who wish to contribute to this fund, there are two ways:1) Online conations via credit card via rsffoundation.org/donate.  Please note that the gift is for the “Ian Carsten Scholarship Fund”  in the “Purpose of the donation” box.2) Mailing a check to the Rancho Santa Fe Foundation at PO Box 811, Rancho Santa Fe, CA 92067.  Again, please note the “Ian Carsten Scholarship Fund” on the memo lineSI is thrilled to have this opportunity to always keep Ian s memory with us and thanks the Carsten family for their generosity in establishing this fund. written by Kevin Lee In a letter to clubs, the following information / clarifications around what was covered through USA swimming insurance around virtual workouts is summarized below. It is scheduled for Saturday, September 5th @ 2pm and will last about 2 hours. All swimmers 13-18 are invited to this unique opportunity. Please sign up at the link below and let your coach know.San Diego Imperial Swimming is thrilled that so many of you have returned to the water. Your coaches, teams, and facility managers are working diligently to keep you safe with social distancing measures, mask use, additional cleaning, and health checks to minimize the spread of the virus within our community. We are grateful for your strict compliance to these measures and your communication to your coaches over your swimmer’s health. That being said, we realize the pandemic is still spreading and recognize that positive cases will unfortunately happen within the swimming community. The SI COVID Recovery Task Force is expecting all coaches to follow these steps when a positive test occurs within 14 days of a swimmer or coach being present at any USA swim practice:The positive test is reported to USA Swimming, the LSC operational risk chair and the LSC general chair. The stable swim group in which the positive test occurs does not return to practice for 14 days after the last swim practice at which the swimmer with the positive test was in attendance. The coach of the stable swim group will get a COVID19 test to ensure no transmission. If sufficient social distance (greater than 10 feet at all times) combined with wearing of a face mask and county public health allowing, the coach may stay on deck while waiting on results. The head coach of the team will be contacted at the end of the 14 day quarantine to understand if any further positive tests / illness occurred and if the impacted person is healthy.During this entire process, the name of the person with the positive test will NOT be reported. The team name will be not be released.Additionally, SI expects that if a swimmer is in close contact with someone who has been diagnosed with COVID19 they should NOT return to practice for 14 days after the last contact with the person. We have these processes to ensure that swimming remains a safe activity throughout the pandemic and that any learnings can be shared across USA swimming to better protect all swimmers. We still have much to learn about COVID19 and it is critical we work together to protect our swimming community.Thank you in advance for all you are doing to support your swimmers and your participation and understanding during these difficult times. We want every Black athlete, Black parent, and members of the Black community to know we hear you, we see you, and we support you. The athlete committee takes a very strong stance against all racial injustices, as our core values in our mission are synonymous with diversity, equity, and inclusion. We, San Diego Imperial Swimming, hold our mission statement to heart:In order to have fun while swimming, we must be committed to integrity, meaning it is paramount to treat every member of our swimming community with respect, so our tradition of service can reach all aspects of our clubs, and unify our swimming community into a team. Although San Diego is one of the more diverse LSCs, we acknowledge the lack of diversity in the sport of swimming and even our own LSC. As an LSC and Athletes’ Executive Committee we are committed to help combat the micro and macro racial injustices within our sport and community. As of right now, SI Board of Directors does not include a DEI Chair. We will be asking our House of Delegates to add the DEI chair to the SI Board in the November election. This is not just a letter to our committee but an announcement of our course of action. We will now be implementing a DEI Educational Piece to our Annual Athlete Leadership Summit. Also, we will be more transparent and communicative with our resources within our LSC. Such as, we will share more information about the Don Watkins SWIM Scholarship on platforms most used by our community. We are also working on creating a SI DEI Fact Sheet which will include general USA Swimming facts +resources and statistics + resources specific to our LSC. The goal of these “fact sheets” is to provide information about DEI to every one of our members. Our goal of this extends beyond the climate of right now, but to ensure we keep conversing, recognizing, and educating within ourselves and our swim community to keep this movement alive. We see the power of education and encourage everyone to educate themselves on Black oppression. Silence is complicit, as well as doing nothing. Here are some easy and effective ways you educate yourself and become a better ally: Netflix Shows 1) Explained: The Racial Wealth Gap 2) Time: The Kalief Browder Story 3) Who Killed Malcolm X? 4) When They See Us 5) 13thBooks: 1) Whistling Vivaldi by Claude Steele 2) Conversations in Black by Ed Gordon 3) Chokehold by Paul ButlerThere are many ways to be involved and we believe they all help contribute to combating racial injustices. Whether it is signing petitions, texting or calling local officials, and donating, San Diego Imperial Swimming urges you to take action, not for yourself, but for the movement. Please visit the link below for an easy guide on how YOU can help.We hope you will help us add strength to ensure this is kept a movement, and not a moment. For any questions, do not hesitate to contact us. We have listed several contacts, ranging from the local DEI Committees to USA Swimming Staff, below.SI Board Meeting will be held Monday, July 20th via Zoom meeting.
