Description:

In this series, ride along via horse, coach, riverboat, and train, and see the landscape through a traveler's eyes. In the process, we will gather a better understanding of their times and their intentions. Taking words from the traveler’s journals, we will paint a picture of places we know but learn far more about the differences and the changes that occurred. The Fight for the Right To Vote - Part 1 Elizabeth Cady Stanton Susan B. Anthony The Fight for the Right To Vote - Part 2 This series is named in honor of Dr. Robert E. Dunker, president emeritus of Western Iowa Tech Community College and founder of The Institute for Lifelong Learning. Does the President Matter? Making the Case with Abraham, Martin, John -- and Teddy! Presidents come and go. Some wielded great power; some had no ability to do anything. Others watched their power dribble away. Many who wanted to assert presidential power were slapped down hard by the legislative branch, which controlled the purse and were seen as the people that passed laws. Few men in the executive office not only grasped for power but attained it. Some wielded it with skill. Why could some do so while others failed? Much of that is due to the leadership skills of the person occupying the office. This annual lecture uses the examples of Presidential leadership to see the skills a particular President brought to the office, and the challenges they faced. Lecture 1: Presidency has changed over time. Our first two examples will demonstrate how presidents welded power in the 19th century, and show the differences in Executive power and Congressional direction. · Lincoln – The Choice to Fight · Van Buren – The Trail of Tears and the Judgment of History What skills did Abraham and Martin bring to the job at hand? What were the consequences of their actions? Were they effective? Were they Leaders? Lecture 2: Oct 27, 6:30 PM (Online) (presentation video) Our next examples will show the changes in executive leadership in the 20th Century. Neither of these men entered office with a mandate, but they quickly amassed a public following that gave them leverage. · T. Roosevelt – Choosing Sides – Putting the Presidency Behind the Miners · Kennedy – Providing Leadership that Changes Minds What skills did each have that enabled this? How did their practices change presidential power? What policies did they promote? All classes will be online this term - meaning you can attend these classes! The causes and concerns of the late 1960s led to conflict and division. The results are recorded, and the toll was paid by the young with their bodies, and their parents with their pain. As those years recede, the hard earned lessons of the time fall away, forgotten by those not there, ignored by those who want to forget, and too often twisted by those who want the story to reflect their viewpoint. The people who lost their lives or their innocence, both on a distant soil and on home ground, are owed more than that. The Turmoil of 1968 -- click to read the slideshow. These people should not be forgotten! These notes for my 'Regional Greats' series provides a guide to the fascinating lives of local people you should meet! Meet them via these lectures! Click the name to see the presentation! (in PDF format - no audio included) George Norris A legendary Nebraskan that left his impact on the state, and the country Harry Hopkins Few people realize just how vital Hopkins' contribution to the New Deal was. Born in Sioux City, but his impact is felt across the country. Henry Wallace Another giant whose incredible efforts in agriculture are all but completely forgotten. Lou Hoover If she is remembered at all, it is as a wife of a president. This Iowa woman was so much more than that. Norman Borloug He is credited with saving over a billion lives. (Yes, you read that correctly.) And no one in his home country could pick him out of a police lineup. Susan La Flesche Her determination would save lives; her advocacy for American Indians would change national policies; her hospital would improve lives for decades after her passing. William Jennings Bryan To some, he is remembered as a joke and a buffoon. He was the voice of the rural Americans, and much of what he stood for in his early days rings true yet today. Remembering Regional History While the majority of my classes deal with American History, I also have a number of programs dealing with 'local' history. Like the programs listed for the regional greats, they integrate the national events with local happenings. Below is a specific look at the Siouxland region during the post-WWII period. Sioux City from 1945 to 1995 WWII Remembered, 75 Years On This series for the Sioux City Public Museum looks back to see how Sioux City and the region were affected by WWII, and these major battles. It is also to honor those who lived through this era pass, by preserving their 'memories' as 'history.' Iwo Jima at 75 -- click to see and hear the program. This tiny island took longer than D-Day, and inflicted casualties beyond comprehension. Iwo Jima would greatly affect the decisions made in the months to come, and change the world. Bulge at 75 -- click to see the program slides Churchill said, undoubtedly the greatest American battle of the war and will, I believe, be regarded as an ever-famous American victory. What do you know about the Bulge? See how locals saw the war. D-Day at 75 -- click to see the program slides D-Day was the beginning of the end of Germany's drive to control Europe. It was an effort on a scale unknown before or since. But what do your really know about D-Day? And were any Siouxlanders involved? Sparks fly when Susan B. Anthony spoke in Sioux City! We will see Sioux City as she saw it, and we will meet the woman behind the icon when we hear what Sioux City saw when they met!
