The new Quick Search field allows you to perform word and phrase searches of document content without first going to the search tab. It’s available at all times at the top of the PEP-Web page, right above our banner.  The menu from [ + ]We are very pleased to announce a new feature on PEP-Web: Quick Search! The new Quick Search field allows you to perform word and phrase searches of document content without first going to the search tab. It’s available at all times at the top of the PEP-Web page, right above our banner.  The menu from that position has been moved to the left side of the page.  Just click in the field, type your search, and press enter!  Or click the search icon in the field. The new Quick Search works just the same as the Search for Words or Phrases in Context  box on the Search Tab.  The name Quick Search is not meant to imply that the searches are faster instead it means access to it is more convenient, and you can quickly try several different terms without clicking to select the field again and again.  And like the word search area of the search tab, by using advanced search syntax, you can do very advanced searches. So, for example, you can do these types of searches, right from the Quick Search field: transference w/5 countertransferenceTransference must occur within 5 words of countertransference transference not w/5 countertransferenceTransference must not occur within 5 words of countertransference apply~Search for apply or other forms of the word , including applied, applies. This is known as “Word Stemming” ~angerUse the PEP Thesaurus to expand anger with it's synonyms and search for matches to any of them.Note also that it will keep your previous searches for you, in your browser s session memory, so that you can quickly recall a prior search term or phrase.  The list will appear as soon as you start typing in the field. While developing this feature, we fixed a few search bugs that had snuck into PEP-Web!  The word stemming and thesaurus features of our search interface had become problematic, but they have now been fixed.  One of the problems was that the thesaurus operator which was , was no longer being detected correctly.  We ve opted to change that to a tilde ( ~ ) at the beginning of a word, which is consistent with Google search syntax.  The stemming operator which searches various forms of the same word remains the same, a tilde ( ~ ) at the end of the word.  Moving the thesaurus operator to the beginning of the word also means that these can be combined and those can be combined with the other advanced search syntax as well.We know how important search is to PEP-Web users, and we wanted to make sure searches were as convenient as possible.  We hope you find it helpful!New Videos and Some New Features!January 5, 2016The first two videos from the PEP/UCL Top Authors Project are now available in the video area! We ve also made a few changes to the PEP-Web website: we ve reorganized the menu, and placed some of the options at the top of PEP-Web.  The idea was to make the support options easier to find, and the new [ + ]The first two videos from the PEP/UCL Top Authors Project are now available in the video area!We ve also made a few changes to the PEP-Web website: we ve reorganized the menu, and placed some of the options at the top of PEP-Web.  The idea was to make the support options easier to find, and the new data error reporting form option more convenient. Here s why it needs to be convenient: if you find an error in the data on PEP-Web, you should select (highlight) the erroneous text BEFORE you click the Report a Data Error option.  The text you select will be automatically included in the form, as will the address of the article in which you have found the error.  Sometimes, errors are reproduced directly from the original article, so it s helpful to tell us whether you ve checked it against the original.  You can tell us that in the Explain why you think this is an Error field of the form. And there s more to come in a few weeks we will publish the 2016 Release of PEP-Web!New Feature – Tips! And with it, a completely new Support site!October 1, 2015PEP has quietly rolled out a new feature to PEP-Web.  At the bottom of the PEP Banner we now have a tip feature which will help you get the most of PEP-Web, and help you to use PEP-Web more efficiently and effectively.  Originally, we thought we might offer a tip of the day feature, or one new tip each [ + ]PEP has quietly rolled out a new feature to PEP-Web.  At the bottom of the PEP Banner we now have a tip feature which will help you get the most of PEP-Web, and help you to use PEP-Web more efficiently and effectively.  Originally, we thought we might offer a tip of the day feature, or one new tip each day. So you ll get multiple tips each day!You will only be able to view the first part of the tip until you hover over the tip. Then a  pop-up box shows up with the full tip.  Also, at the bottom of the tip, there s a link that takes you to the support page where you can see the entire list of tips. When you click on See PEP-Web tips (at the bottom of the tip) you will notice that you are now on the new PEP Support site!  You can find information about PEP-Web, subscriptions, support, and direct access to the PEP-Web digital archive.Other easy ways to get to the support site:Click on Psychoanalytic Electronic Publishing on the PEP-Web banner area.Click Help at the bottom of the PEP-Web pageUse the web address (URL) http://support.pep-web.org.   Note that it s just the URL PEP-Web, prefixed with the word support .We hope that the new tip feature, and the new support site, helps  make your use of PEP-Web more efficient and enjoyable.  And we look forward to continuing to improve it over time.Announcing a New Journal: IJP en españolApril 19, 2015It is with huge pleasure that we announce the launch of the Spanish online version of the International Journal of Psychoanalysis IJP en español (IJP-es). The annual release means that another year of the current publications move out of the publisher’sembargo period: subscribers now have access to the2015issues of current journals with three year embargoes, and2013issues of journals with five year embargoes.New ArticlesThis year, we have added the German languageLuzifer-Amor: Zeitschrift zur Geschichte der Psychoanalyse (LU-AM). Luzifer-Amor is a German-language journal focused on the history of psychoanalysis, which currently includes 31 volumes from 1988-2018. Improvements and New FeaturesWe’ve continued to work to improve theprecisionof our links from references to PEP-Web articles. In previous releases, our matching algorithms used heuristics to try to match references to articles, in order to match as many as possible even when the information in the reference is inexact. From user feedback about these links, we’ve now constrained the matching algorithm with a conservative bias towards moreprecise matches. This should help researchers who use the “Who Cited This” feature at the end of each article, producing a more accurate citation list. However, since it can be useful to find an article closely related to a reference which isn’t currently in the PEP-Web Archive, last year we introduced a “Related” reference link. The related reference link takes the user directly to a potentially related article, based on our automatic (heuristic) analysis of the reference. This method gives readers a means to find a related article, but it may not be accurate, since the information in a bibliographic reference is limited and not always representative of the content of an article. We ve not only continued to refine the algorithms for the matching, but we ve also done (and continue to do) manual checks on the links.Last year we added theOriginal Article Downloads (PDF) feature. As we mentioned, collecting 147 years of articles is no small task, and we have made significant additional progress in process of back-filling the library. It can be difficult to get the originals in some cases but we continue to work on this. We keep adding to it over the course of the year, and expect to have nearly 80% of the originals in place by the end of this year. Finally, last year we introduced the first version of PEP-Easy (pepeasy.pep-web.org), our web app for accessing PEP-Web from mobile devices. It brings together most of your favorite PEP-Web features in an easy to use application which can outpace PEP-Web in presentation speed. It allows you to easily read on your browser, as well as download articles in PDF and ePub format. We ve just come out with a minor upgrade to the app which broadens its use for users with institutional logins, supporting Federation Login, e.g., via OpenAthens. And PEP-Easy now supports secure HTTP, via the URL https://pepeasy.pep-web.org.A Library of Premier Journals, Classic Books, and VideosPEP-Web has over one million pages of online journals! This new 2019 release of PEP-Web contains the complete text and illustrations of 74 premier journalsin psychoanalysis, 100 classic psychoanalytic books, and the full text and Editorial notes of the 24 volumesof the Standard Edition of the Complete Psychological Works of Sigmund Freud as well as the 19 volume German Freud Standard Edition Gesammelte Werke. It spans over 148 publication yearsand contains the full text of articles whose source ranges from 1871 through 2019. This should help researchers who use the “Who Cited This” feature at the end of each article, producing a more accurate citation list. However, since it can be useful to find an article closely related to a reference which isn’t currently in the PEP-Web Archive, we’ve created a new “Related” reference link. The related reference link takes the user directly to a potentially related article, based on heuristic analysis of the reference. This method gives readers a means to find a related article, but it can be inaccurate, since the information in a bibliographic reference is limited and not always representative of the content of an article. Our implementation of this feature is very new and we will continue to refine it as the year progresses. This year we introduce two new important features for PEP:Original Article Downloads (PDF)Our PDF download feature has now been enhanced to give users a choice between the PEP-Web rekeyed version of an article, and the original article format from the journal, with all the original formatting. You can choose which type of PDF you want on an article-by-article basis, just by clicking the PDF Download button, which now works as a pull-down menu, selecting one of the two formats.Collecting 147 years of articles is no small task, and while we are still in the process of backfilling the library, it already contains over 90 thousand original PDFs! The Original PDFs show the actual page layout and formatting of the original publication. To provide the originals, we collected a mix (by the nature of the age and rarity of some journals) of scanner and print-based PDFs (where scanner based PDFs contain “pictures” of the pages rather than being “text-based”).PEP-Web for mobile devicesAlso coinciding with the 2018 is the official release of ourweb app,PEP-Easy.Providing an interface more suited to smaller devices than PEP-Web, it brings together most of your favorite PEP-Web features in an easy to use application which can outpace PEP-Web in presentation speed. It allows you to easily read on your browser, as well as download articles in PDF and ePub format. The web app interface also has an internationalization feature that can be configured to display in Spanish or French. The application is designed to make it quicker and easier to find an article on PEP-Web using mobile devices. You can do simple author and title searches or search full text using more advanced terms like on PEP-Web. You can search and read abstracts without logging in, and you can set your login as persistent to read or download the full-text (or PDFs and ePubs) of articles. And as a web app, you are always using the latest version. PEP-Easy can be accessed atpepeasy.pep-web.organd will run on smart phones, tablets, and other small mobile devices running a current version of a standard mobile browser. The author index now shows complete last and first names as published, [ + ]As promised, we are adding many new features this year.  Now, we are pleased to announce that we have completely redesigned the workings of the author index.  This index is now in place on PEP-Web, though we need your help to complete the transition. The author index now shows complete last and first names as published, and middle initial, rather than showing last name and initials.  This means that the name, when you click on it, will produce a more specific list, separating authors who share the same last name and initials.  In other words, all the authors named Smith, J. will no longer appear as only one entry, and a combined publication list, if their names are, for example, John Smith and Joseph Smith.  Instead, they will appear as Smith, John and Smith, Joseph. We also have a mechanism in place to consolidate names that were published in an inconsistent manner, which results in a single author s list being split across multiple index entries.  If John Q. Smith has published with and without his middle initial, then both forms will appear in the index:  Smith, John  and Smith, John Q.  We now have a way to consolidate these easily, without changing the information on the article.  But when we see John Smith and John Q. Smith have published, it s not always clear to us that it s the same person.  So we are asking our users and more particularly, our authors, to help by reporting on a form the names that need to be consolidated or otherwise fixed. To report a problem with the author index and indicate the fix, please click here! Thanks for your help!Announcing a New Feature – Offline Reading!April 21, 2015Now subscribers can download PEP-Web articles to read later, even when not connected to the Internet.  There are two download formats available: PDF and ePub, each with an easy and convenient download button, which you can find on our toolbar (next to the print icon) at the top of an article. When you click either of these [ + ]Now subscribers can download PEP-Web articles to read later, even when not connected to the Internet.  There are two download formats available: PDF and ePub, each with an easy and convenient download button, which you can find on our toolbar (next to the print icon) at the top of an article. When you click either of these buttons, the article you are reading is automatically downloaded to your device so that you can read the article even when you are not connected to the Internet.  You don t need to download both download whichever best meets your needs.  Below we explain the advantages of each format.Download PDF:  The new PDF feature is oriented toward on-screen reading.  In this case, the PDFs are reproduced a single page per output page, to look more like a journal page, and to make the text less wide and less dense and easy to read electronically (rather than printed). The PDF bookmarks feature is utilized to provide a Table of Contents (table of section headings).  Links are active, and take you to the associated section of the document for within-document jumps, and to PEP-Web for links to other PEP-Web articles (for links to PEP-Web, it requires that you are online).  PDF works on all size devices, but since line length does not change to accommodate screen size, you may have to scroll left and right to read lines, or zoom in and out, depending on your device screen size.Download EPub:  ePub is a standard book reader format which is reflowable, which is to say it allows more flexibility in page layout.  The ePub format is ideal for reading on phones and smaller devices.  You need to have a eBook reader app to read ePub format (and many phones and tablets come with one standard).  The real benefit over PDF is that the text wraps to fit your device perfectly. Depending on what reader you use, the fonts are also scalable, so that text is at a comfortable size for reading.  On some devices, you can even set it to display multiple columns of text.  Where possible, a Table of Contents is provided using the section headings. Links are active, and take you to the associated section of the document for within-document jumps, and to PEP-Web for links to other PEP-Web articles (for links to PEP-Web, it requires that you are online).Notes: 1) On some devices, the downloaded file will open automatically in the associated application after it s finished.2) PEP-Web doesn t have all the original journal s font information and styling all journals are displayed in PEP s standardized styling).  Because of this, pages sometimes contain more text than the page size allows, and a single page may flow onto a second page.  Since the intent here is primarily onscreen reading while offline, we hope this won t be an inconvenience.Announcing the PEP-Web 2015 Release!January 16, 2015We have great things in store for you this year!  There are lots of exciting new features planned, and rather than our traditional schedule of a data release in January, and a midyear all-at-once feature release, we will be starting a new continuous improvement schedule, where we will be adding new features throughout the year. The platform is now in place, however, and we will be looking to bring together and preserve all existing audio visual material of interest and relevance to psychoanalytic thinking, practice and research, as well as to encourage the creation of new material. As a result, we expect the available material to grow rapidlyand for the video archive to become a valuable resource for research, study and teaching.
