A photo from LCTL Coffee House, where Pitt students gathered to enjoy coffee and other afternoon treats they ordered in world languages!  Welcome to the Department of LinguisticsThe Department of Linguistics has an international reputation and is particularly strong in the areas of second language acquisition, applied linguistics, Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL), and sociolinguistics. Our department is centrally concerned with core areas of linguistic theory, but it is unusual in that it also attaches equal importance to applied and descriptive endeavors. Language Learning LabPitt offers approximately 35 languages, and the Department hosts a state-of-the art PC and Mac lab to facilitate language learning as well as research. TESOL CertificateGraduate students can pursue the Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages Certificate. Above are the 2013 winners of the Robert T. Henderson Scholarship, given to students committed to TESOL. Less-Commonly-Taught LanguagesClaude Mauk, LCTL Director, shares a light-hearted moment with the ASL, Arabic, and LCTL coordinators at a "speed-languaging" event. Arabic CertificateLCTL offers classes in Arabic with either the Levantine or Egyptian dialect. Students can add courses in Arabic culture, readings in Arabic, Arabic Sociolinguitics, and more to earn a Certficate in Arabic Language and Linguistics.
