Description:

Dr. Lin is a Fellow of IEEE. He has 30 years of experience working on RF and wireless technologies in industry, academia, and government. His work covered device characterization, circuit design, and system integration using various semiconductor and nano technologies (Si, SiGe, GaAs, InP, GaN, ZnO) for various applications.EducationDr. Lin received the B.S. degree in Electrophysics from National Chiao Tung University (NCTU) in Taiwan in 1987. He came to Los Angeles in 1990 for graduate study, and received M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Electrical Engineering from UCLA in 1991 and 1994, respectively.Employment HistoryAfter receiving his doctoral degree In April 1994 and working briefly as a postdoctoral researcher for a few months, Dr. Lin joined AT T Bell Labs (became Lucent Bell Labs in 1997) at Murray Hill, New Jersey as a Member of Technical Staff. He later became the Technical Manager of RF and High Speed Circuit Design Research in 2000. While at Bell Labs, he was working on microwave and millimeter-wave circuits using various technologies for the development of early wireless communications. These include 3G, wireless LAN, and point-to-point link (28 and 38 GHz). In September 2001, he joined Agere Systems, a spin-off from Lucent Technologies, where he was involved with high speed CMOS circuit design for optical and backplane communications. In July 2003, he joined University of Florida as an Associate Professor and was promoted to Professor in August 2007.Other AppointmentsAt University of Florida, Dr. Lin served as the Chair of Electronics Division in Electrical and Computer Engineering Department from Fall 2008 to Spring 2010. He was elected as a Faculty Senator in UF Faculty Senate and a member of College of Engineering Faculty Council for the term of 2006-2009, contributing to the revision of college constitution reflecting shared governance and the revision of tenure promotion practices. Dr. Lin was invited for summer visits and international collaborations at several institutions. He was a Visiting Professor at National Taiwan University in summer 2006, a Visiting Researcher at NTT Microsystem Integration Laboratories in summer 2010, a Visiting Chair Professor at National Sun Yat-sen University, Taiwan, in summer 2012, and gave a short course at National Taiwan University of Science and Technology in summer 2016 as an Honorary Chair Professor. In October 2016, Dr. Lin was appointed as a Program Director of Communications, Circuits, and Sensing Systems (CCSS) in the Division of Electrical, Communications, and Cyber Systems (ECCS) at National Science Foundation (NSF), through the Intergovernmental Personnel Act (IPA) Assignments (a.k.a Rotator Program). At NSF, Dr. Lin led the CCSS program, managed several cross-cutting programs involving wireless, spectrum, semiconductor, security, machine learning, and worked on new initiatives in these areas. He was also a member of Wireless Spectrum R D Interagency Working Group (WSRD) under NITRD, involving with coordination and planning of strategic priorities. He continued to serve at NSF for close to the maximum term of 4 years, and returned to UF for full-time research and teaching in August 2020.ResearchDr. Lin s research interests include sensors and biomedical applications of microwave and millimeter-wave technologies, wireless energy transfer and conversion, RF system-on-chip integration, and integrated antennas. In addition, he is currently working with his collaborators to develop a rapid bio-sensing technology for detecting troponin, SARS-CoV-2, or other biomarkers. Dr. Lin has authored or co-authored more than 290 technical publications in refereed journals and conference proceedings. He holds 20 patents and has several other patent applications. Several of his patents have been licensed. An updated list of his publications and patents can be found at this link on Google Scholar. The list of publications can also be found using his ORCID ID. Since joining University of Florida, he has graduated 27 PhD students.Professional ActivitiesDr. Lin served as an elected IEEE Microwave Theory and Techniques Society (MTT-S) Administrative Committee (AdCom) member for two terms in 2006-2011, and served as the Chair of Technical Coordinating Committee 2010-2011, overseeing all technical committees and exploring new technical fields. He was an Associate Editor of the IEEE Transactions on Microwave Theory and Techniques from 2006 to 2010 and served as the Transactions s Editor-in-Chief from 2014 to 2016. Dr. Lin has been a member of four MTT technical committees: Biological Effects and Medical Applications, Wireless Communications, RFIC, and Wireless Energy Transfer and Conversion which he co-founded in 2011 and served as its chair in 2013-2015.In addition to the leadership roles in publications and technical committees, Dr. Lin also served on several conference steering committees and technical program committees, including International Microwave Symposium (IMS), Radio Frequency Integrated Circuits Symposium (RFIC), Radio and Wireless Symposium (RWS). He was the General Chair of 2008 IEEE RFIC Symposium and the Technical Program Co-Chair of the same conference in 2006 and 2007, the Technical Program Chair of 2009 IEEE Radio and Wireless Symposium, and the General Co-Chair of 2012 Asia-Pacific Microwave Conference (APMC). He is currently chairing the 2021 IEEE Wireless Power Transfer Conference (WPTC) organizing committee and co-chairing the 2021 IEEE Wireless Power Week (WPW). Besides IEEE, Dr. Lin has been serving on advisory committees and advisory boards for a few other organizations.Awards and HonorsDr. Lin was elevated to the Fellow of IEEE in 2010 for his contributions to integrated microwave circuits and systems for wireless sensors. He received 1994 UCLA Outstanding Ph.D. Award, 1997 ETA KAPPA NU Outstanding Young Electrical Engineer Honorable Mention Award, 2007 IEEE MTT-S N. Walter Cox Award, 2016 NCTU Distinguished Alumnus Award, and 2016 IEEE RFIC Symposium Tina Quach Outstanding Service Award. He received the University of Florida Technology Innovator Awards in 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2016, and 2017 for patents licensed in prior calendar year.Dr. Lin and his students and collaborators received several best paper awards in IEEE conferences, including the 2015 IEEE Wireless Power Transfer Conference Best Paper Award voted by all attendees, the 2015 IEEE IMWS-Bio Best Student Paper Award First Place, the 2016 IEEE Radio and Wireless Week BioWireless Best Student Paper Award Second Place, the 2016 IEEE Wireless Power Transfer Conference Best Student Paper Award Second Place, and the 2018 IEEE Wireless Power Transfer Conference Best Student Paper Award.TeachingDr. Lin is teaching EEE6374 RF Circuits and Systems in Fall 2020. He will teach EEL4461/5462 Antenna Systems/Advanced Antenna Systems in Spring 2021.CV with List of Publications and PatentsJenshan_Lin_CV_2020_09
