Saving our planet is one of the popular news nowadays. The Ozone layer is wearing out and this is causing climate change and global warming, which is dangerous to living things (both plant and Animals). However, Scientists are doing their best possible to save our planet and one of the things they are working on is making things less harmful by making them eco-friendly.  Moreover, without wasting much time, we have done our research and compiled some of the latest environmentally friendly technology that you can use when constructing. Read on and be enlightened.  Dimension Stones Stones are always considered for many generations as a premium material in any construction project. Talking about its durability, it has been in use for many generations and it was observed that structures built with stones have survived many hazards (both natural and artificial). Not only that, Stones occur naturally and therefore they cause less harm to the environment. There are different types of stone used in construction projects and they include, crush stone, limestone, and dimension stones and so on. However, we are to consider dimension stone, which is an eco-friendly building material.   Dimension stones are naturally occurring materials that are excavated from the ground. They occur in different color and textures. Unlike, glass, metal, concrete, the stones are easily found and requires no artificial additive to make it strong or for beautifying it. However, for this reason they are less harmful to the environment and are more preferred to traditional building materials. Moreover, they are cheap and easy to maintain.  Straw-bales Straw-bale construction is another construction method, which uses bales of straw (like wheat, rice, oats straw) as structural elements or building insulation. The use of bales of straw in construction is one of the latest developments in constructing environmentally friendly structures. Although the use of straw in structural buildings is dated back to the Paleolithic period (old stone age), where it is used in Africa; however, coming back into usage today is as a result of the revolutionary development in building construction. Unlike the conventional building materials, Straw-bale construction is environmentally friendly and has many advantages like; they are very cheap because they are made from waste products. They have low embodied value. They are biodegradable and can last for a longer period if they maintained properly.        Grasscretes As we know, concrete is an important construction material and that it is widely accepted all over the world. The only problem with concrete is that it is harmful to the environment as it manufacturing process releases carbon dioxide, a big contribution to change in climate. However, different research has been made by experts to help design an alternative or a way to reduce the hazardous chemicals, which is released during its manufacturing process and Grasscrete is one of the results of their research. Grasscrete is the mixture of concrete and natural soil in a patterned structure. After sometimes, the grass will grow in areas where the soils are and in little time, the entire area will be covered with grasses. This, however, reduces the environmental impact of chemicals emits by concrete. According to researches carried out, Grasscrete is considered as a better alternative to Concrete because it is less harmful, it is stronger, uses less concrete, last longer and greener.  A wooden framed house is a structure that is professionally built with wood that has been industrially processed and treated to withstand all kinds of attack (both pest and weather condition). While a concrete frame home is a structure built with the mixture of cement, sand, and water and requires little or no treatment like the wooden framed structures. Which one would you prefer between a wooden frame home and a concrete frame home? Wait! You don’t have to answer the question now. Just patiently read the article to the end. Amazingly, physically, be it wooden or concrete both look the same, so nothing will change no matter what you use. Also, Both of them have Pros and Cons and I believed after reading this post, you will surely be in a dilemma for which one to pick between the two. Without further ado, let’s get to the main point.  Cost of Construction and Maintenance The cost of construction and Maintenance of both homes (Wooden and Concrete) are a little bit different. Firstly, let’s talk about construction cost. Wooden framed home is less expensive to construct because it requires only processed and treated wood and the work of professionals to join it together. Unlike concrete homes which require, Sand, Cement, Water, use of Machines, Steels, professional tools and a lot of supervision to get it together. Talking about maintenance, Wooden framed home required a lot of maintenance to make it last longer. This is because if not maintained often, it may be affected by the effect of weather and can even be attacked by insects and pests. But the later require little or no maintenance because it can stay longer and withstand all kinds of attack.  Durability The advantage of Concrete homes is that they last longer than wooden homes even without maintenance. We have cases of concrete homes that have a lifespan of well over a century withstanding, natural disasters, wars, and so on. Talking of wooden framed homes, their disadvantage is that they don’t last long unless they are regularly maintained. However, Even if they are maintained often, they have little tendency of withstanding all kinds of disasters like the Concrete framed homes. Effect of weather Both Wooden framed and concrete framed home are usually affected by the effect of weather. However, only the concrete-framed home has the tendency of withstanding the effect of weather for a long period. Although, if well treated and processed, the wooden framed home can also resist the effect of weather for sometimes but not as long as that of a concrete framed home. Eco-Friendly This is actually the most important point of all. A structure can be Durable, Resist weather effects, cost less during construction and even requires little or no maintenance. When it is unsafe for our planet all the other advantages are of no use. According to research, concrete framed structures are very dangerous to the environment. This is because it has been discovered that some dangerous gases which are dangerous to the environment are emitted during manufacturing of materials used in its construction. However, Talking about Wooden framed homes, they are very safe to use and are the best alternative to concrete because they do not emit dangerous gases even during the process of its construction.  Do you want to hire a contractor for your next project but you don’t know how to go about it? Never worry, we always have your back. All you have to do is just read this blog post. Construction projects always looks very hard especially if an unqualified contractor handles it. Apart from being very tedious, it can also waste your time and cause you to overspend. There are certain things you have to do when hiring a professional. As we all know there are a lot of contractors out there (both qualified and unqualified), which on an ordinary level, you can’t distinguish between them. However, by following the steps given in this blog post, you will be able to differentiate easily. Without further ado, let’s get to work and at the end, you will find it easy when hiring a contractor for your next project.  Work with a contractor who specializes in the field Before hiring a contractor for your project, you are advised to know if he or she specializes in the field. According to one of the workshop safety rules, “Use the right tool for the job.” This also applies to construction, “Always hire a specialist for your project.” This will actually save you time, money and will prevent any complication.  To prevent all kind of error and complication, you should hire someone that knows “everything about everything” in that field you are working on. Hiring specialist in the field does not only save time, energy, money and reduce stress but it helps you do the work within speculated time and reduce the risk of running into a problem during the course of the project.    Check for Qualifications, Experience, and Portfolio Yes! Knowing the contractor’s qualification is the most important of it all. Asking for previous work done by the contractor and experience will show how credible he or she is. Moreover, another thing to ask for when you want to hire a contractor is asking for his license and insurance. This however not only show you his credibility but it will put you on a safer side so that when something went wrong during the project, the contractor’s liability will be able to cover the cost of the damages cost.  Fortunately, many states require contractors to be licensed or to join an association. This can help if any problem occurs during the course of the project; you will find someone to run to for assistance.    Interview different contractors to know who to hire Another thing you can do to hire a qualified contractor for your next project is by interviewing many contractors. Ask questions like will my project require a permit? May I have a list of references? What type of insurance do you carry? And more. This will definitely distinguish and reveal to you who is qualified and who is fake. In Conclusion, these are the things you should know when hiring a contractor for your project. I believe that by following the tips discussed in this post, you will always hire the best.  When selecting a contractor, you have to know what you are doing. If not, something along these lines (see video below) could happen to you during your building project! All joking aside, we seriously recommend that you take selecting a contractor, well.. seriously. I ve been in the contracting business for over 30 years, and I have seen the good, the bad, and the ugly. By being very cautious during the selection process, you are going to save yourself a LOT of headaches, and a LOT more dough in the process, trust me!!Here are some red flags to look out for:The contractor is hesitant to show you a license. This may be obvious to some, but contractors must be licensed. If they don t want to show you the license number or dodge related licensing questions, all I can say is run! Pro tip: make sure the license is ACTIVE! Call your local business licensing organization to be sure. The contractor has no previous work to showcase. This could mean two things. One, they don t have a ton of experience, or two, they don t have any quality work to show. If that is the case, you may want to look into some other options.Beware of too good to be true prices. When a contractor quotes you a price well below others bidding for the same job, this can be a huge red flag. In many cases, they will come in low to get the job, and then raise the prices afterwards and use all kinds of excuses as to why this had to happen.Beware of too good to be true timelines. If a contractor promises that the job will be done much faster than you think is realistic, beware. In some cases, they will be telling you something that just sounds good. If you can, speak to previous clients of the contractor to find out the real deal. There is usually a time in everyone’s life when it is compulsory for you to have a place you call home. According to Wikipedia, “A home is a place where an individual, family, household or several families of a tribe resides. Therefore, a home should be more than a place you just hide your head from the effect of weather. A home should be a place where you enjoyed the most out of your life.  There are a lot of factors that can make you call where you live a home. However, according to our research, we discovered that most people don’t know what to look for when they want to buy land for building their home. For this reasons, we decided to enlighten our readers on the things they need to consider when choosing land to build their home on. Without much Ado, Let’s dive into the main reason we are here. Size of Lot The size of the land you plan to buy has a lot to do with the home you want to build. However, for this reason, knowing the size of the lot is one of the factors (and actually very important) to consider when buying a land. This is because the size of the house you plan to build will determine the size of the lot you should buy. Therefore, before rushing into buying lands for your dream house, you should talk to professionals and ask questions about what you don’t know. By doing this will surely prevent you from mistakes that will lead to future regrets.  Cost of the land As we know that Real Estate investment is a business of time and Money. However, what you should know is that the more time you spend on research the more ready you should spend your money wisely. Buying land for building your house can be very risky at times. So, you are advised to know the cost of buying the lot before wasting your time and energy on it. This will prevent you from spending out of the budget that may lead to an unfinished project. Availability of Social Amenities Another Question to ask yourself is “how close is the land to social amenities like school, supermarket, Park, and others?” Asking this type of question and the type of answers you get will tell you whether buying the land is appropriate or not. The presence of all social amenities like school, church, park, supermarket, gas stations and so on is very important and it has a lot to contribute to you and your family enjoying your stay there. Therefore, you are advised to forget what you are told about the area and make a physical visit there before rushing into purchasing the property.  If possible, you can also take an agent with you to scout the area. In Conclusion, always try to contact a professional real estate agent before doing anything. However, by doing this, you will never run into problems.
