Hey, sweetheart? God his voice is sexy; like every romance hero Ive ever read about in one human. He kind of looks like one too. Eden?
Not your sweetheart, I mumble, rolling over to face him.
Yeah, I know. Does he sound disappointed? Or am I really tired? Our five-hour trip just got extended until this wreck clears up.
I roll back over. Okay. Then I realize that I was face to face with him which means hes not driving. He has this crooked half-smile on his face thats wow. Ace is crouched so that our noses are barely three inches apart. Were not moving.
Nope. Ace pops the p and gives me a pitying look.
Its fine, I dont even know what Im going to say to my sister when I get there. I sit up and a big hand comes out to stop me. I blink and realize I nearly hit my head on the top bunk. I guess Im not awake yet. Thanks.
Ive ended up with many a goose egg because of this bunk. Ace laughs and I swoon. Like I literally make a swooning sound. He smirks at me, and I roll my eyes. I can feel how red my face is and make sure to not look at him. Your burger is up here.
You got me a burger? My stomach growls.
I figured youd feel better and be hungry after a nap. He gets back in the drivers seat, folding his long legs to get up there. I squeeze through and pick up my burger before I sit down. There are red tail lights as far as I can see. Great.
Now, I need to know that you didnt steal that car. I also need to know youre not sixteen or something.
My burger is halfway to my mouth, but I stop to answer him. Ill be twenty in a few days. Ace shakes his head and rubs his bearded jaw. Is there something wrong with that? Im not sixteen, youre not endangering a minor. I take a bite of the burger. Its not warm anymore, but Im starving, so I really dont care.
Am I harboring a fugitive? Ace watches me chew the burger.
I shake my head. Ive driven that car since I was sixteen. Its always been my car, but my parents do own it. I think they want me back more than they want the car. They can buy a new car, Im the last daughter they can marry off. As soon as I say the words, I cover my mouth. I did not mean to say so much.
Marry off? With a quick glance at the still cars around us, he turns in his seat to look at me. Spill it.
I get a question before I answer yours. I talk around the bite of burger. Ace pretends to think, eyebrow arched, tapping his chin. I giggle and he smiles. God hes hot, rugged, manly.
Ill answer your question.
How old are you?
I caught him off guard. Good. Ace clears his throat. Thirty-three. My eyes widen. Practically ancient. He glances back up at the traffic then those emerald eyes land on me again.
Youre not ancient. Older than I would have guessed, but you thought I was sixteen. I shrug and pop the last bite of burger in my mouth.
Too old for you. He holds my gaze when he says it and I can feel the heat rolling off him in waves. Oh wow.

Ready for our hike? Tanya asked.
Do pigs fly? Sue said with a laugh.
The sooner we do our hike, the sooner we can get on the road to Santa Fe, Ellen pointed out. Just think, in five hours, we could be shopping in the plaza.
Is that supposed to motivate me? Thats just what Im looking forward to, more walking.
Oh, come on, Sue, Tanya said. This will be more of a stroll than a hike. I promise.
Ellen and her friends put on their walking shoes and then took the trail beside their cabin into the canyon.
Ellen breathed in the cool, morning air. The beauty of the canyon elevated her mood. Some of the stone formations were thick and striated, while other rocks formed mounds of crushed granite. In the distance was a tall formation that reminded Ellen of the sphinx.
Watch your step, Tanya said from up front as she stepped over a large rock.
This feels so good, Ellen said from where she took up the rear. I feel like were one with nature.
And nature is so majestic, isnt it? Tanya said. Doesnt that big rock look like the tower of a magical castle?
I thought it looked more like the sphinx, Ellen said.
Sue shook her head. You see a castle and Ellen sees a sphinx. What does it say about me that I see a penis?
Tanya scoffed. You know what it says about you.
Dont tell Tom, Sue warned. Hell say my mind is in the gutter.
Isnt it? Ellen asked.
Yes, but theres no need for Tom to know that.
The three friends chuckled. Ellen realized that if someone had overheard Sue, they might think she was a promiscuous woman who hid her extramarital interests from her husband, but her friends knew she just liked to make people laugh.
Tanya asked, You think theres any truth to what that psychic said about there being a shade in Santa Fe? What if there is? What if he confronts us?
Oh, Tanya, Sue said, you know as well as we do that there are ghosts everywhere. Im sure theres more than one shade in Santa Fe.
But why would the psychic warn us? Tanya wanted to know.
If anyone can handle a confrontation with a ghost, its us, Sue said. Dont let fear get in your way of having a good time.
Ellen heard a shriek as Tanya stopped short.
Tanya? What are you screaming about? Ellen asked from the rear.
That wasnt me, Tanya said, backing up. It was that tarantula. See it?
On the trail two feet in front of Tanya, a hairy tarantula stood on its hind legs shrieking like a small child. The spider was as big as Ellens hand.
Turn back Sue said, as she pushed Ellen in the direction from which theyd come. Ive had enough of nature for one day.
So much for not letting fear get in the way of having a good time, Ellen teased.
I can handle just about anything but a hairy spider, Sue said. Especially one that screams.

Lacey cracked open the paint can and poured the new shade of sea foam green into a pan while grinning over her shoulder at Bryce. This is really how you want to spend your day?
As long as Im spending it with you.
We could be spending it doing other things, but
Hand me a paint brush. He ignored her comment and went on to trimming in around the window frame, sighing.
She was still holding out on him. Refusing to admit they were more than just friends. He was afraid to admit it, but he may have officially been friend-zoned; that is, if you cuddled in bed and literally slept with friends. A month later, and he couldnt get her to agree that there was something going on between them.
Theyd been spending all their free time together, getting to know each other, falling asleep in each others arms. But still, nothing. Shit, case in point, she had somehow recruited him for projects around her house, and he wasnt even getting sex out of the deal. He was in way over his head with this one.
He may be selfish, but at least he wasnt sleeping in the barracks every night and dealing with the ridiculous Texas Heat during the day.
Hed tried everything to get through to her, though. Confessed his feelings every chance he got. Maybe that was it? Maybe he was coming on too strong. If he laid low, he feared hed lose her all together.
Youre thinking awfully loud over there. Lacey pulled his attention away from his mind that was running in circles.
The filter between his brain and his mouth had clearly been damaged by paint fumes. Arent you ready to give in yet and admit that theres more going on here?
Turning toward him, Lacey batted her lashes. Whatever do you mean? Theres a lot going on here, Bryce. In case you havent noticed, were in the middle of a remodel. Theres more than just painting that needs to be done.
Tease. Youre a goddamn tease, Lacey. He dropped his paintbrush and stalked in her direction. Maybe if he gave her just a taste, she would change her mind.

Dr Helen Steadman
Dr Helen Steadman is a historical novelist. Her first novel, Widdershins and its sequel, Sunwise were inspired by the Newcastle witch trials. Her third novel, The Running Wolf was inspired by a group of Lutheran swordmakers who defected from Germany to England in 1687.
Despite the Newcastle witch trials being the largest mass execution of witches on a single day in England, they are not widely known about. Helen is particularly interested in revealing hidden histories and she is a thorough researcher who goes to great lengths in pursuit of historical accuracy. To get under the skin of the cunning women in Widdershins and Sunwise, Helen trained in herbalism and learned how to identify, grow and harvest plants and then made herbal medicines from bark, seeds, flowers and berries.
The Running Wolf is the story of a group of master swordmakers who left Solingen, Germany and moved to Shotley Bridge, England in 1687. As well as carrying out in-depth archive research and visiting forges in Solingen to bring her story to life, Helen also undertook blacksmith training, which culminated in making her own sword. During her archive research, Helen uncovered a lot of new material and she published her findings in the Northern History journal.
Helen is now working on her fourth novel.
