The Second Tsunami DVD Now Available On December 26, 2004, a tsunami devastated the coasts of Southeast Asia. The world mobilized to help and the promises made by governments suggested that the affected countries would have enough funds to replenish their stocks of medicines which had been destroyed in the tsunami. Unfortunately, despite the issuance of Guidelines for Drug Donations in 1996, the same mistakes were repeated with dramatic health and economic effects on disaster-affected countries. The Second Tsunami, a 26-minute documentary produced by Pharmaciens Sans Frontieres Comit International, addresses the impact on the countries hit by the disaster and the aftermath of donated pharmaceuticals on this region. DVDs are available for $12.00 each (including shipping and handling to US and Canadian addresses). Please make checks payable to UMaine Center on Aging. For additional shipping fees for addresses outside of the US and Canada or for more information, please email gressitt@gmail.com. The conference agenda was extensive and included presentations on topics such as state and national statistics on BZD use, the proposed Medicare BZD coverage exclusion, state efforts at addressing BZD use issues, nation-wide efforts on BZD disposal options, and BZD use among older adults. One outgrowth of that discussion on BZDs and the elderly was the development of three Center on Aging authored fact sheets to better inform healthcare and policy professionals, as well two fact sheets aimed at the general population, particularly older adults, to educate about BZDs. These are available on our publications and reports page. During 2003, the MBSG undertook their first survey of benzodiazepine use, misuse, and abuse; inviting data submissions from participant organizations. This was followed by an international conference held in September 2003, in Bangor, Maine. The Center on Aging is looking forward to its continued affiliation with the Maine BZD Study Group and next year s conference. 2007 annual meeting will be in October 2007, for further information contact Bill Flagg, (207) 498-1376 or bflagg@carymed.org.
