Phase 1 Return to restricted shooting from Saturday[23.05.2020] It's taken few days to digest the Archery GB paper on the Risk Control Measures they've advised clubs to use, to conduct our own risk assessment and to make other preparations. But we think we're now ready. The Risk Control Measures are outlined here and you MUST read and comply with these if you want to start shooting again. I would also highlight the need for you to pre-book a target before travelling to the club. The 5m rule on target spacing means we can only have 10 targets out and are limited to one archer, or family group, per target. If you arrive and there are no free targets, you will not be permitted to shoot. You can view the booking schedule here and make a booking by contacting Steve (see here for details). I will give a briefing at 1pm on Saturday and Sunday for those shooting and you can ask any questions you may have then (this is just for those shooting, please do not come just for the briefing). In the meantime if anything is not clear please contact me. It's probably wise to arrive a bit earlier in any case as setting up may take a little longer. This is a strange new regime and I hope we can count on your support to make it work using common sense and co-operation. Rod White Chairman Bath Longbow Results! [10.10.2017] The Longbow results are here Bath Longbow tournament took place on 8th October in near perfect conditions. I don't know who had control of the weather or what sacrifices were made but it was the best in weeks. Maybe a concession to the club's 160th birthday. It was no surprise that some PBs cropped up and many of last year's scores were exceeded. Anyone would have thought Simon Nother's plus 135 was enough to win the prize but Amanda Cale smashed that with plus 162. Well done to everyone who took part and I hope you enjoyed it. I certainly did as the team of Bath Archers helpers who turned up in the rain on Saturday and all of those shooting on Sunday anticipated my every move so everything was done almost before I thought of it. Thank you to everyone, too numerous to mention here but you will be elsewhere. Thank you to all of you archers for just getting on with the shooting. Fortunately not too many mistakes in the scoring, but maybe the heat got to you. Finally thank you to Gillian Pratt who has volunteered to take over the running of the shoot next year, so watch this space. Bath Archers Longbow Results [16.10.2016] We hope you had a great day at our 2way longbow tournament held on Sunday 9th October. Yet again the fine weather favoured us on Sunday with just a little cloud cover to add interest. So in addition to the wonderful help I received from Bath Archers both on Saturday morning and during Sunday it all made a very restful experience for me as the organiser. Particular thanks to Stella and Hazel for fielding the refreshments (and to Elliot for turning to and sweeping out the clubhouse in the morning). Also to Kathy for yet again helping me with the scoresheets, a very testing task at the best of times, and of course Alex for keeping everyone in order as field captain. I would like to thank the following for mucking in on either day to get it all working smoothly. It helps tremendously to have plenty of willing workers of all bow types who do not just shoot and leave others to work for the club to keep fees down. In no particular order and with apologies if I have missed anyone:- Steve Hammond Alan Lippiatt Nick Bullus Steve Purkiss Stuart Ohren Duncan Garner Robin Benton Andy Carr Kay and Colin Deacon Rod White Roy Williams - Thank you for the cake! Thank you also to our Lady Paramount Val Leveridge who did a sterling job of handing out prizes but made a good effort at winning them as well. Ceremony for the Davies Family - Sun 4 Sep [02.09.2016] There will be a short ceremony by an ex-member of the club and his family on Sun 4 Sep between 1320 and 1400 on the river bank at the 60yd marker, in order to scatter his mothers ashes. Mrs Betty Davies was a member of Bath Archers in the 1970s along with her husband Tiger Davies, he was laid to rest at the same spot after his death in 1976. I have spoken to Mr Ady Davies (the son) and he is aware of the timings of the break between shooting on Sunday and he has said that they will arrive about 1320 and will be gone by 1400. He has also been instructed to make himself and his party known to the Field Capt on the day before he proceeds onto and over the field. I have given permission for Mr Davies and anyone else who has mobility issues to drive around the top edge of the field in order to reach the area of the 60yd marker. Please can any member who is shooting on Sunday give any assistance they can to the Davies family during this period and can the afternoons shooting be delayed slightly if needed to ensure that they get chance to complete the ceremony in good order and without being rushed. All bar 7 of the straw bosses have been removed from the clubhouse and stored in a secure location, off site for the winter. The square target stands have also been removed to the same place along with the archives. Thank you to Mark and Colin for providing the vans to enable this to happen, to Hazel for providing the secure storage site and for Robin Jarvis for helping load the bosses on Sunday morning. It is with regret that the field has had to be placed out of bounds for vehicles for the time being, this is because the ground, especially just off the hardstanding, is too soft to support a car. On Sunday morning 2 vehicles got stuck and had to be pushed off the field. There is very limited parking at the entrance to the field and I would ask all those members who are able to walk, to park on the road at the top of the lane and walk down to the club, thereby leaving space for those who may not be as agile anymore. Please do not park on any area of Rawlings land, he made it quite clear on Sunday morning that club members only have access rights on the lane and any type of parking or stopping off the lane was forbidden. Best regards Bath Archers Webmaster On the eve of the 600th anniversary of The Battle of Agincourt, nine longbow archers met on a wet and slightly muddy field in Bath to shoot for 'The Philip Simmons Memorial Tankard' (photo here.). With Alex Gilmour as Field Captain the National round started in the rain but ended on a dry note. Stella Simmons, Club President, kindly presented the prizes, with Paul Tuffs winning the tankard and Kay Deacon winning the closest to the gold final one arrow volley. Thanks to all who attended or helped mark the occasion. Photos of the event can be found in the Photos page for 2015.. A skeleton crew from Bath Archers travelled to Salisbury today and were triumphant against South West Wilts Archers, bringing the coveted Lalique Glass trophy back to Bath. Although 18 archers from Bath had originally signed up to shoot, disappointingly only 7 actually turned up to compete on the day; South West Wilts in contrast fielded a strong team that was three times the size! Despite the initial disappointment and embarrassment over the poor turnout from Bath, South West Wilts were excellent hosts and soon this long standing and friendly competition was underway; John Scarman, Simon Vercoe, Colin Deacon, Hazel Ede, Nick Bullus, Kay Deacon and Paul Tuffs were determined to reclaim the trophy that wed lost in each of the past two years. Happily we were blessed with dry weather and enjoyed amazing catering all day courtesy of the friendly and hospitable South West Wilts club and in the end Bath were victorious! The final aggregated scores were Bath 3,720 points, South West Wilts 3,280 points a top achievement and fantastic team spirit. Well done Bath! In addition, Simon Vercoe and Paul Tuffs each shot a personal best and achieved their first six and three gold ends respectively, which added to the excellent spirit of the day. Finally, a massive thank-you to South West Wilts for a thoroughly enjoyable, hard fought but friendly day. Photos can be seen in the Photos page for 2015.. Thank you all! What a day! Basked in glorious sunshine all day, Bath Archers hosted Cheltenham Archers in the annual contest for the Ashes. After welcoming Cheltenham with bacon butties, the 2 sides shot a Western round, breaking at lunch with a shared buffet and filling up on endless cake at the end of the day. Bath Archers did their club proud with personal bests, 6 gold ends and a Club record being set. Special thanks go to Nicki for cooking all the bacon butties, to Jill for helping with everything all day long and Alex for volunteering to be Field Captain for the day. Thanks must also go to every Bath Archer: team spirit was fantastic and everyone contributed and proved that many hands do indeed make light work. We are VERY happy to report that Bath Archers were victorious in retaining the Ashes and the results of the shoot can be found here. Photos of the day can be found in the photos section under 2015. Well Done one and all and we look forward to visiting Cheltenham next year for a re-match on Sunday 25 September 2016! [27.09.2015] In a change from the typical shoot reports which principally focus on who won what, where, we would like to take the opportunity to highlight a young archer who reflected the true spirit of archery and competition this weekend: Molly Stone. After a solid start, Somerset U14s Champion Molly suddenly suffered from a series of uncharacteristically bad ends and misses. Despite these setbacks, Molly simply continued shooting and maintained a positive, sportsmanlike mindset throughout. Several ends later, equipment failure was finally diagnosed when her arrow rest - which had presumably been failing during the preceding ends - finally broke completely. By this time of course it was too late for Molly to be able to put in a score for the Metric IV that would reflect her shooting ability. Nonetheless, rather than withdraw (as many juniors, and indeed seniors, would have done), once a replacement rest had been sourced and fitted, Molly simply got straight back onto the shooting line and continued to shoot, in great spirits right through to the end. As such, we would like to commend Molly Stone for her outstanding determination and champions attitude in the face of adversity - a fine example to us all. Of course now that pesky rest is fixed, its onwards and upwards for the indoor season and 2016 - good luck Molly! Other Bath Archers juniors were also shooting and, having had slightly better luck with their equipment, managed to place first and second in their respective categories, with both claiming a number of County Records along the way. Congratulations to Elliot Ede (U12s Gentlemans Compound Unlimited) and Bethany Ede (U14s Ladies' Recurve). Top shooting Edelets !! There are some photos now in the photos section under 2015. Keep up the good work Bath Juniors! Somerset GWAS champions![25.09.2015] Big Congratulations to Somerset for winning the GWAS intercounties tournament on sunday 20th September! With particular well done to our Bath Archers who were selected to shoot for Somerset : Nick Bullus, Kathy Hammond, Kay Deacon, Dominic Latham, Simon Bulley, Amyce Aurora-Smith, Rhiannon Norfolk, Mark Smith, Mark Renouf, Keith Townsend, John Scarman and Hazel Ede. Well done to you all! The results in full are here Bath - Somerset 2015 Interclub Champions!!!![07.09.2015] Bath went head to head with other clubs in Somerset and were crowned 2015 champions! After many years of failing to win the Club award, Bath fielded an impressive 13 archers although scores from only 5 archers from each bow type could be submitted to count towards to the Club award. The winning Bath team were Rob and Jade Pocock (Recurve), Andy Carr (Barebow), Dominic Latham (Compound) and Kay Deacon (Longbow) and photos of them and all other competing Bath Archers can be found here. However, not only did Bath win the Club award, many Bath Archers set personal bests and there were also many individual successes, which in no particular order were as follows:- Jade Pocock (1st Under 18 Ladies Recurve) Colin Deacon (2nd Mens Recurve) Hazel Ede (2nd Ladies' Recurve) Andy Carr (3rd Mens Barebow). Dominic Latham (Mens 1st Compound) Kay Deacon (Ladies' 1st Longbow) Joan Cottle (Ladies' 2nd Longbow) Stephen Cottle (Mens 1st Longbow) Photos of our team are now in the photos section under 2015. Presidents Shoot[22.08.2015] Following the hard fought battle for the Double Dutch Clog, the field was then set up for the Presidents Shoot. With nearly 30 archers competing, Stella started proceedings by declaring that whoever came in 22nd place would win the Shoot! With 10 fun targets at various distances, archers gathered armed with Club jelly bows ready to take aim at, amongst others, minions, balloons, paper plates, fruit bingo, a pack of cards and cricket stumps. Competition was rife with many archers scoring negative scores on some targets!! Lalique 2014 Report [12.11.2014] The annual Bath vs South Wilts Lalique tournament took place on the 26th Oct at the Bath ground. Historically, this event has been used to introduce the newer members of both clubs to the world of archery tournaments in a friendly, low key, relaxed event. The round shot is a Western. We were blessed with unseasonable good weather which made for near ideal shooting conditions. With just over 20 archers, the bow styles and classifications from each club were matched as close as possible it was clear it was going to be a closely fought match. Well, we were not disappointed at the half way mark after the 60y distance, Bath held the narrowest of leads at 2509 to 2476. After a top notch lunch from our on-site catering team, battle recommenced - fuelled by bacon, sausages, tea and cake! The 50y distance saw some excellent scores from both sides and all classifications. The final aggregated scores finished up as Bath - 5094, South Wilts 5391. Results here. Credit to the longbows of South Wilts who put up some amazing scores which helped to swing that balance their way. Plans are already being formulated to win it back next year! A big thank you to all the Bath Archers who helped to buy all the things needed for the day and pulling together to set up, and pack away, the field and catering facilities. All of which resulted in the day running very smoothly and a thoroughly enjoyable event by both teams. A special mention should go to Charlotte Morgan who stepped in at the 11th hour to help out with the catering without whos intervention we would have gone without catering for the day a big thank you to Charlotte! Records Officer The Results can now be downloaded from the Events Page. Congratulations to Bath Archers - Nick Bullus (1st Gent Longbow), Rob Wilson (2nd Gent Recurve) , Duncan Garner (3rd Gent Recurve) and John Scarman who won the Bath Handicap trophy. On 6th April, Bath Archers held their annual Open Day Shoot to mark the start of the outdoor target shooting season. This is an open competition based on the length of time the member has been with the club, the round, their score and then their handicap. In order that the competition is fair to all levels of expertise, individuals can choose the round they wish to shoot. A variety of rounds were shot including Long and Short Nationals, FITA 70 and a FITA 60. Members had to contend with a bizarre mixture of weather sunshine and a small gale on the shooting line but almost no wind at the 60/70 meter line to light rain showers and cloud. As normal the sustenance that was provided at break time was fantastic, thank you to everyone involved who provided snacks and thank you to the volunteer Field Captain for the tea and whistle. There are 2 categories of Trophy, one for members who have been at the club for 3 years and over and the other for those under 3 years at the club. This year the Gwen Crocker Trophy (under 3 years) was won by John Scarman (Recurve) shooting a Short National, whilst the Margaret Lewis Arrow was won by Steve Hammond (Long Bow) shooting a FITA 70. Well done to both of them and well done to everyone else who attended. The tournament will be held on the 10th August this year. Entry forms can now be downloaded from the Events Page. A big thank you to Sue, Guy and Dom Latham for all their very hard work on Saturday and Sunday, 15th and 16th March, for the deep clean in the club house and getting it to the state where we can all use it again. Well done to them for taking the initiative. Good news! Indoor records have now been added to the records area. Also the field is now open for parking on. Let the shooting commence! The clubhouse and equipment, whilst still damp, is in a much better state than it was, and the clubhouse is better prepared should it flood again. As a bonus, the hard work means that the equipment area is cleaner and better organised than it has been for years. Whilst there is still work to do, and the bosses will need to be tended to get them fully dry, we are now on the way back to being able to use the field again. Thanks again. Steve Hammond Three bath archers competed at the European Archery Festival in Telford at the weekend. Rob Wilson and Jeff Hamilton shot in the men's recurve division and came a very respectable 114th and 165th out of 256 in the qualifying round where the likes of Brady Ellison of the USA and GB's Larry Godfrey and Patrick Huston qualified in the top 10.. Apart from a few unplanned and frustrating sight-seeing trips around the historic town beforehand and a particularly cold and wet five minutes half way through, we all shot our best in the windy conditions and waited for the results. We were then treated to an excellent tea with more sandwiches and cakes then we would ever finish. They certainly threw down the gauntlet in terms of hospitality. After tea, there were a number of prizes for the best male/female/recurve/compound/longbow/barebow and Bath Archers did extremely well, picking up best lady compound (Sue) best gentleman compound (Robin), best lady longbow (Kathy) and best barebow (John). Very well done to you all! And the overall result? Bath Archers WON back the Ashes from Cheltenham!
