From a Leaf to a Plate
In a small Indian town, a single leaf falls to the ground. As it lies still, waiting to sink into the soil and to be a part of new trees, a man picks it up. He wipes off the dirt, gives the leaf an approving smile and gently puts it next to the dozens of others.
A few weeks later, a family prepares for a Sunday picnic in a nearby park. The baskets are packed with home-made food – some of which still holds the warmth of the oven. After hours of eating and playing games it's time to head back home. Leftovers are packed in the baskets, and the father places the plates in the ground, covering them with soil. It's time for the leaf to rest now, as it becomes a part of the Finnish nature.

Areca palm tree (areca catechu, India) drops its leaves naturally when the old leaves are making room for the new leaves. These leaves has been used as plates for dining purposes for centuries. With new technology this natural and rigid material can be compressed to a shape of a design plate which in use with dry food can last longer periods.
The production process of the plates doesn’t require added chemicals or heavy infrastructure. The carbon footprint of making the plate consists mainly of heating water and the metal cast. Because the tree drops its leaves naturally the production process doesn’t require cutting or harming of the trees.
The safety of the food contact material has been verified in several studies conducted by VTT (Technical Research Centre of Finland) and the recommendation is that in use with moist food the plate would serve only once.

ArecaGoodPlates are 100% natural palm leaf plates. The production process doesn’t require added chemicals or heavy infrastructure. After the use the plates can be left to the ground where they compost in around two months. The plates can be also burned without the fear of releasing chemicals.
Natural production processThe leaves of the areca palm tree (Areca Catechu) are picked up from the ground, soaked in hot water and compressed to a form of a design plate between two hot casts. When the plate cools down it will harden to a form which can endure even a bit harder use.
The production process doesn’t require cutting or harming of the trees. The production process is natural and environmental friendly from beginning the end.
Durable and natural materialIn looks and functionality the material has wood like qualities. It will durable without bending a greater force, it resists heat and the texture of the leaf offers esthetic and natural looks.
Social ResponsibilityArecaGoodPlates supports a children home called “Hampi Childrens Trust” (India). The trust offers to the poor children a possibility to go to a school. Portion of the income from every single plate goes to the trust.
In the future ArecaGoodPlates will imprint the drawings and messages of the children to the plates, and in this way will build a connection between an european consumer and Indian children. The children will receive a compensation of their art to be used in education.
