Description:

Methods for Personalityand Psychopathology Lab within the Department of Psychological Sciencesat Purdue University is focusedon using dimensional traitmodelsto improve theconceptualizationand assessment of personality disorders (PDs). For example, existingresearch suggests that the Five-Factor Model (FFM; or Big Five)provides a reasonably comprehensive framework for describing normalpersonalityfunctioning. Our work seeks to translate and apply thesebasic sciencefindings to improve the understanding and treatment of personalitypathology.The implementation of adimensional model holds the promise of eliminating some of thehistoricaldifficulties of the personality disorder categories (i.e., excessivediagnosticco-occurrence) and instead building upon the foundation of basicscienceby linkingclinical syndromes with general personality research.
