Our online graduate program features a Master of Statistics degree and two graduate certificates, one in Applied Statistics and Data Management and one in Statistics Education.These online programs feature the same outstanding courses offered to on-campus students. Online students will have access to the same lectures and will complete the same assignments/exams as on-campus students. Online tools will be used to facilitate interaction between instructors and students and to develop a vibrant community of online learners.Since its start in 1941, the NC State Statistics Department has a proud record of training problem solvers. We have graduates working in a wide range of disciplines spanning academia, business, and government. The goal of our online program is to provide the same high quality education and the support needed for you to join the ranks of these outstanding alumni. The online Master of Statistics degree is the same degree that on-campus students receive, with exactly the same requirements. Thirty credit hours (10 courses) are required; all requirements are available online. Many online courses will run concurrently with on-campus courses, and lectures will be viewed as high quality recordings with features to stop or speed up the presentations and accompanied by relevant exercises. Some online courses are specially designed to take advantage of web learning and will not be concurrent with an on-campus course. In either case, online tools will be used to facilitate interaction between instructors and students and to develop a vibrant community of online learners.EligibilityMasters Degree PrerequisitesThe minimal requirements for entry are an undergraduate degree and coursework in calculus through multivariate calculus (comparable to MA 242) and linear algebra (comparable to MA 405). In the application process, your credentials (transcripts and personal statement) will be evaluated for determining acceptance into the Master of Statistics online degree program. Note that GRE scores are not required, but should be uploaded if they are available.Masters Degree Course RequirementsA Master of Statistics degree requires a minimum of 30 semester hours. This includes the following 21 hours of required course work:  Statistical Methods: ST517 - ST518 Statistical Theory: ST501 - ST502 Linear Models: ST503 Statistical Consulting: ST542 Statistical Programming in SAS: ST555Substitutions may be made for courses taken elsewhere, but transfer credit is not given.In addition to the above required courses, 9 hours of electives are taken to fill out the full 30 hours of coursework. Examples of electives include: Applied Time Series: ST534 Applied Bayesian Analysis: ST540 Statistical Programming in SAS II: ST556 Data Science for Statisticians: ST558 Introduction to Statistical Learning: ST563The online masters degree is the same as the on-campus masters degree, but at the moment there are fewer elective offerings available online. The final diplomas are the same for both programs. Due to the large differences in the backgrounds of our online students compared to that of our on-campus students, the application processes are completely separate.This master's degree requires 30 credits. At 2020-21 tuition rates, the cost of the required graduate statistics (ST) courses is $462 per credit for North Carolina residents and $1,311 per credit for non-residents. Thus, the total estimated cost for the program is $13,860 for North Carolina residents and $39,330 for non-residents. See Online and Distance Education Tuition and Fees for cost details.Career ProspectsGraduates of our program develop a strong methodology for working with diverse types of data in multiple programming languages. Their skills at building and assessing predictive and inferential models are honed as well as their ability to communicate to diverse audiences.We have students from all walks of life.  Some come to us directly after their undergraduate coursework, but most are working professionals looking to further their careers or move to a new phase of their lives.  Students have six years to complete the degree. Most take one course per semester, including the summer, and are able to finish in three to four years. Other students take a full-time load of three courses per semester and are able to finish in one year.  Our graduates are employed in many fields that use statistics at places like SAS Institute, First Citizens Bank, iProspect, the Environmental Protection Agency, North Carolina State University, and Blue Cross and Blue Shield.
