Today, as part of our ongoing effort to evaluate and improve our work, the Department adopted the San Diego Countywide Crisis Management Philosophy. These de-escalation considerations have been approved unanimously by the San Diego County Police Chief’s and Sheriff’s Association. The work was completed by experts from all of the local law enforcement agencies, including the National City Police Department. The philosophy provides guidelines in de-escalation strategies, officer training, and use of force review. While the National City Police Department has current policies on de-escalation, use of force, and use of force reporting and review, the adoption of the countywide guidelines enhances our department’s focus on peaceful resolutions to critical incidents.Over the past 25 years, community engagement has been the cornerstone of the National City Police Department’s mission. We have a tremendous responsibility to maintain the public’s trust and confidence in all that we do.
