WasteWater Treatment Equipment and Engineering Manufactures ofTurborator®Self Aspirating Sludge and high Solids MixerforAerobic Sludge MixingDigestionHigh Solids Mixing / BlendingAeration MGD Process Technology Inc. (MGD) specializes in wastewater treatment equipment and engineering and has over 25 years of experience in the water and wastewater industries. Since 2006 MGD has been manufacturing the patented Turborator® technology in the greater Boston area and we are pleased to provide you with continued service and support.Turborator Introduction:The Turborator®has been used successfully in installations throughout the United States, Canada and other parts of the world for over 25 years and has a proven track record in both retrofit and new installations. The Turborator®has been used in both municipal and industrial applications wherever mixing and aeration is needed - especially for sludges and high solids. The following table lists some typical applications for the Turborator®: ATAD Poultry and Animal Waste Lagoons Sludge Mixing Sludge Holding Tanks Lagoons Performance / DesignThe Turborator®is a self aspirating submerged impeller aerator and mixer. When the patented Turborator®impeller rotates in a liquid, a low pressure zone is created behind each blade. This low pressure zone creates a strong vacuum which draws air down the shaft and disperses as fine bubbles into the surrounding liquid.Air is introduced up to 9 feetbelow the surface without requiring a blower or compressor. The air drawn by the pumping action of the Turborator®is sheared by the vane edges of the high speed radial flow impeller producing millions of micron sized bubbles. The long retention time and high combined surface area of these micron sized bubbles along with the thorough dispersion generated by the mixing action of the impeller, substantially increases the oxygen transfer efficiency and keeps solids in suspension. The high velocity discharge design also prevents plugging or blockages common in other types of aeration system. Advantages of gas introduction below the liquid surface include the absence of surface splashing and mist formation which release pathogens into the atmosphere and can cause ice build up in cold weather climates.Refer to Turborator®Mixing Diagram for graphical representation. The oxygen transfer efficiency is higher than other mechanical self aspirating aerators due to the manner in which gas is introduced below the liquid surface. In testing performed in accordance to the ASCE "Standard for the Measurement of Oxygen Transfer in Clean Water" Turborator®units have oxygen transfer efficiency 18% greater than competitor's equipment - based on the horsepower delivered at the shaft. The simplicity of theTurborator®design results in a durable, dependable, low maintenance system. The basic components of the system include a severe duty electric motor with a belt drive mounted to a solid main frame, a heavy walled steel shaft supported by heavy duty bearings, and the patentedTurborator®impeller. The optional incorporation of a variable speed drive gives the Turborator®flexibility between pure mixing and mixing with increased aeration to satisfy the most stringent process requirements.Turborator®units are available in sizes from 5 - 30 HP and can be installed on a fixed support or mounted on floats to suit the application. ATAD Autothermal Thermophilic Aerobic Digestion The Turborator®has proven to be very cost effective and reliable in retrofitting existing facilities. Please refer to the documents provided for details on how the Turborator®increased plant capacity and improved overall process performance at the McMinnville Water Reclamation Facility. The temperature comparison document clearly shows the benefits of installing theTurborator®.. District of Salmon ArmTurborator®technology has been providing aeration and mixing solutions to the wastewater industry since 1989 and is a featured component in the first ATAD system in North America, The District of Salmon Arm Water Pollution Control Centre, Salmon Arm, BC which continues to operate today. First ATAD in North AmericaOperational Experience Information and Resources CONTROLLED AIR FLOW (CAF) OPTIONTurborator®with Controlled Air Flow (CAF):TheTurborator®can be supplied with the Controlled Air Flow (CAF) option. This allows for direct, independent control of the airflow, without adjusting the speed of the impeller. The CAF system requires additional 120 volt power and a control signal to each unit to regulate the air flow.CAF can be used in conjunction with a Variable Frequency Drive (VFD) to allow for the most flexibility in controlling both mixing and aeration. Please contact us for more information.VARIABLE FREQUENCY DRIVE(VFD)Turborator®with Variable Frequency Drive (VFD)EachTurborator®is supplied with a severe duty premium efficient motor suitable for use with a variable speed drive (VFD).Varying the speed of the impeller within the aeration range allows for control of the air volume drawn into the liquid, which can be used to control dissolved oxygen or temperature. This enhances process control and maximizes the energy efficiency of the Turborator. Please contact us for more information.Below are links to files containing more information regarding the Turborator® and several short videos of operation.Turborator® BrochureSludge Mixing OverviewATAD OverviewMixing DiagramATAD Slide ShowATAD DesignImpeller Start-Up VideoSludge Mixing Video News and Events:Most Recent Events: See our Advertisement in thelatest issue of Manure Manager Magazine:https://www.manuremanager.com/Recent Exhibits:NEWEA 2020 Annual Conference Exhibit January 26-29, 2020 Boston Marriott Hotel - Copley Place Boston, MA https://www.newea.org/ Certifications and News: Turboratorreceives CE Certification - November 2012 Water Environment and Technology Magazine (WE T) - September 2010 IssuePlant Profile - McMinnville Water Reclamation FacilityFeatures the Turborator®in their ATAD DigesterWET Article Matthew Dickson, P.E.Principal and founderMGD Process Technology Inc.Matthew Dickson, P.E. is principal and founder of MGD Process Technology Inc. specializing in wastewater treatment equipment supply and consulting engineering. He has 25 years experience in the water and wastewater industries with a focus on process equipment applications and construction.Matt also provides consulting services including project management and engineering for major equipment manufacturers and engineering firms.
