Lutzoni Lab Evolution, Ecology, and Genomics of Fungal Symbioses Learn more about our NSF, GoLife, project on the largest group of unknown fungi. Read more Learn more about our NSF BEE project on lichen networks. Read more Research interests in the Lutzoni lab are centered on symbiotic systems involving fungi and photoautotrophic organisms. Lichens, including their microbiomes, have been our principal focus, but since 2005 our research program has expanded to include endophytic fungi found in all lineages of land plants and endolichenic fungi found in lichen thalli. We have been studying these symbioses primarily from a macroevolutionary perspective, but since 2003 we have adopted an interdisciplinary approach bridging evolutionary biology, ecology, and genomics. Research in the Lutzoni lab spans the full spectrum of activities, from intensive fieldwork-based surveys to experimental laboratory work, across broad spatio-temporal scales. Congratulations to Dr. Nicolas Magain for obtaining an Assistant Professor position in the Evolution and Conservation Biology unit of the University of Liège in Belgium. Nicolas spent most of his Ph.D. in the Lutzoni lab and continued his phylogenetic revision of the genus Peltigera and to address macroevolutionary questions using Peltigera Nostoc as a model system during his postdoctoral research in the Lutzoni Lab at Duke University. Congratulations to Dr. Ko-Hsuan Chen for obtaining an Assistant Research Fellow position at the Biodiversity Research Center of Academia Sinica in Taiwan. Ko-Hsuan completed her Ph.D. in the Lutzoni lab in 2017 focussing on fungal endophytes in the Class Eurotiomycetes and her pioneering metatranscriptomic study of fungal endophytes in the model moss system Dicranum scoparium.
