In Spring 2020 we have seen our country attempt to come to grips with rampant police brutality against black and brown people. We have also seen people of all colors black, brown, yellow, red and white hit the streets to protest and to ask for structural change to rectify hundreds of years of oppression starting with slavery up to the present multiple murders of our citizens by the police. There is hope in these protests, but time will tell if we can finally get the change we so desperatey need and deserve. One thing we do know for sure is that change will not come just because we ask nicely for it. We have to demand it, AND we have to apply consistent pressure to force the kinds of changes that have for so long been kept from us. The problems do not end with the need for police reform or defunding. We also need to fight against a racist system that puts black and brown down with regards to the eduacation, health care and unequal unemployment opportunities they receive. Over the years I have attempted to teach a curriculum that raises awareness of these inequities and at the same time bring to my students the ability to think critically, and read and write at a level that will enable them to be actively engaged in the struggle for justice. This web site has many resources that can help with both of these objectives. Do not hesitate to use anything you find here for your own classes and to fight for justice. The themes of all of my classes has always been social justice because without that none of us can be truly free.
