Hereceived his Ph.D. degree in Chemistry from Purdue University in 2012, andcompleted postdoctoral training in the Departments of Electrical Engineeringand Bioengineering at UCLA between 2012-2016. His research aims to developnovel diagnostic assays and sensors for point-of-care detection of human andplant diseases. He is the recipient of the NSF CAREER Award (2020), NanoResearch Young Innovator Award in NanoBiotech (2018), the Chancellor’sAward for Postdoctoral Research (Honorable Mention) at UCLA (2014), and the BilslandDissertation Fellowship at Purdue University (2011).Abstract:Recent advances in optical sensing andmolecular technologies have considerably broadened the scope of point-of-care(POC) diagnostics from simple dipstick tests to more integrated devices thatcan perform sample preparation, assay reaction, signal quantification and dataprocessing, all in one platform. Smartphone-based imaging and sensing devicesare among the next-generation biosensors that have shown great potential totransform the diagnostic field. The constant improvement of the performance ofthe image sensors and reduction of the price of the smartphone devices haveplaced a transformative microscopy and sensing tool in billions of users’hands. Using these miniaturized devices, personal and plant health can be accuratelymonitored outside the clinics or laboratories, which is especially useful to improveaccess to diagnostic tools in resource-limited settings. This talk willhighlight our recent effort in creating field-portable sensor platforms basedon smartphones, and their applications ranging from POC diagnostics of humandiseases to in-field detection of plant pathogens.
