Over wintering potted plants Hello, I have purchased some plants for my new shade garden but I am getting behind in making the shade garden. They are still in the nursery pots. If I don't get the garden designed before winter can I over winter them by putting the plant (still in the pot) in the ground and cover with leaves? Thank you. Answered Nastursium Seeds Do nastursium seeds need to dry out before they are planted? When they first separate from the mother plant they are green and soft coated. Answered Bumblebee nest that needs to be moved I have an intermittently-used exterior/screen door combo, and in the fall I put down a bunched-up towel between the doors to prevent drafts. This spring when I opened the screen door I realized that bumblebees had created a nest in the bunched-up towel. I replaced the towel and nest between the doors as similar as possible to how I'd found it and directed all the bees back to it after reading that a bumblebee nest cannot be successfully relocated. The bees and the nest survived. Now that it's the end of the season, I'd like to take the towel and the nest out of there, but I don't want to kill the bees. They are 100% FOR SURE bumblebees. They are not wasps or other bee relatives. Do you have any suggestions? Do they overwinter in their nest? Can they be relocated now? Should I wait until spring? Please advise, and thank you! Answered Skunks in Suburbia How can I best deter the neighborhood skunk (a block in Glencairn, East Lansing) from visiting? We don't really want to have to ask you for a good way to clean skunk spray from dog hair (but might as well). Many thanks for your assistance. Answered Transplanting a Sassafras Tree What is the best method to transplant a small sassafras tree? The trunk diameter measures 1/2 inch at four feet off the ground. Can it be transplanted in the fall or should we wait until spring? Answered a tree from memory Many years ago I lived in a house with a driveway and on the other side of the driveway ran a row of trees, evergreens of some kind. What I remember about the trees is that there were no branches low to the ground. I could walk under them. Now we moved when I was five or six, so the lowest branches were probably around 5-6" up. I seem to recall that the trees did not have dense foliage (if you call the needles that). Does anything come to mind? I am having a winter drawing done for a Christmas bulb and need to study possible images to pick one for a model. It would have been nice if they were still there, they would be very large, beautiful, and easy to identify. Thank you, John Arkison Answered tulip tree bark disintigration The base of my tulip tree has turned light tan and the bark is crumbling. The tree was mature when we moved here 18 years ago. It blooms and leaves seem fine. I noticed this problem when I removed some european ginger growing at its base, underneath which asian jumping worms had left their cStings in place of the soil. Can you tell me what is causing this and what I can do. Answered White pines turning brown Hello, I live north of Brainerd on N. Long Lake. Over the past 3 weeks I’ve noticed 2 of my more mature (30-35ft) white pines turning brown this fall. It’s not like the typical seasonal browning/shedding needles. Whole tips of branches are turning brown. It started with one near the lake and now one on the other side of the house. The one near the lake is not far from the water table so I don’t think it’s lack of water. Also, I haven’t noticed and browning of tree limbs or other symptoms of blister rust. Just seeing if you have any thoughts as to what might be happening or how to treat this? Thanks Answered Bonanza Gold Barberry - Invasive? Is dwarf Barberry invasive? I just purchased a 'Bonanza Gold Barberry'. It's only supposed to get 18 in tall. Sold at Wojo's but distributed from Eshraghi nursery (I think from Oregon?)It looks different from the Japanese Barberry I see online indicated as invasive, but the Latin name on the tag is the same - "Berberis thungergii 'Bogozam'" Mine has yellow leaves right now. If it is going to produce berries that are spread by birds, I will not keep it. I'll consider my purchase a donation toward keeping these things out of the system. I bought it before researching, but now I am questioning. Tag says nothing about berries, and sellers said not invasive, but I doubt their expertise and intention. Please let me know if this shrub is not such a good idea. I am wanting a small shrub that need little care and tolerates full sun, but I don't want to contribute to the trouble that invasives cause in our forests. Answered
