Mission StatementThe mission of the Alliance for the Prudent Use of Antibiotics (APUA) is to strengthen global defenses against infectious disease by ensuring access to effective treatment and promoting appropriate antibiotic use to contain drug resistance. With a network of affiliated chapters in 19 countries, APUA stands as the world’s leading organization conducting research and education on antimicrobial treatment and resistance at the grassroots and global levels.Festive greetingsWATCH NOW | ISAC Webinar: COVID-19: Around the World in 80+ MinutesThis unique webinarbrought a global view of the pandemic from those on the front-line in diverse parts of the world. It covered aspects of epidemiology and genomics, screening, control, treatment and consequences of infection. The speakers, all leaders in their fields, have a unique perspective of how the pandemic affects their regions.World Antibiotic Awareness Week 2020To acknowledge World Antibiotic Awareness Week 2020, APUA Board members have recorded a series of short, informative videos on antibiotic resistance (AMR) during COVID-19.Unfortunately, AMR has been largely neglected during the pandemic and these videos hope to raise awareness of AMR.AMR occurs when bacteria, viruses, fungi and parasites change over time and no longer respond to medicines making infections harder to treat and increasing the risk of disease spread, severe illness and death. Each year, at least 700,000 people die from drug-resistant infections and it is estimated that by 2050, this will rise to 10 million people annually. On the last day of World Antibiotic Awareness Week, Dr Mushira Enani, APUA Board Secretary and Infectious Disease Consultant, shares the challenges of antibiotic resistance (AMR) in the day to day practice of an infectious disease consultant. Dr Enani calls for a global approach and a multi sector strategy in tackling AMR.You can watch all the videos by APUA Board members to commemorate World Antibiotic Awareness Week on the APUA YouTube Channel. In the latest video by APUA Board members to mark World Antibiotic Awareness Week 2020, Pierre Tattevin, APUA Board Chair and Infectious Disease Specialist, discusses the impact of antibiotic resistance (AMR) and the importance of using antibiotics properly. If antibiotics continue to be over-used, treatment of many diseases will become more complicated for the next generation.Watch the video and subscribe to APUA's YouTube channel.Let us be united in preserving antibiotics - Souha KanjIn the fourth video by APUA Board members to mark World Antibiotic Awareness Week, leading expert, Prof. Souha Kanj, American University of Beirut, calls for unity in preserving antibiotics.Watch the video on APUA's YouTube channel.Antimicrobial stewardship in acute and critical care during COVID-19 - Jeroen SchoutenIn the the third video, to raise awareness of AMR during COVID-19, Dr Jeroen Schouten, Intensivist at Radboudumc, discusses the issue of over-prescribing antibiotics for COVID-19 patients and urges antibiotics to be used wisely.AMR and COVID-19: The Devil and his advocate - Abdul GhafurIn the second video to mark World Antibiotic Awareness Week, leading infectious disease expert, Dr Abdul Ghafur, discusses neglect of antimicrobial resistance during COVID-19 and the importance of tackling this global health issue.Watch the video here and check back tomorrow for the next in the series.Pandemics and superbugs: Man’s uneasy relationship with nature - Ian GouldIn the first video, Prof. Ian Gould, Consultant Microbiologist at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary, UK discusses man's uneasy relationship with nature.Check back tomorrow for the next video.ISAC WEBINAR | “COVID-19: Around the World in 80+ Minutes” ISAC invites you to join its free, live webinaron25 November 2020atnoon (12.00) GMT.This unique webinar will bring you a global view of the pandemic from those on the frontline in diverse parts of the world. Levy Center for Integrated Management of Antimicrobial Resistance(Levy CIMAR) in tribute to APUA founder and leader, Stuart Levy.Levy CIMAR builds on Levy’s work and takes a One Healthapproach—a collaborative, multidisciplinary effort to improve the health of people, animals, and the environment—to AMR research, policy recommendations, and educational programs.A virtual event on 18 September 2020 attended by colleagues, friends and family celebrated the renaming and the life of the pioneering antibiotic-resistance researcher who passed away one year ago. For more information, read the full story on Tufts Now.Remembering Prof. Stuart B. LevyIt has been just one year since Stuart Levy passed away, but it already seems so long ago… Since then, the world was confronted with an unprecedented sanitary crisis, which kept us all so busy that we could hardly find time to relax. Stuart left us just before a small virus would lead to one of the most dramatic revolutions in our societies. Many paradigms have been changed at a pace none of us would have expected. The economic, educational and cultural activities, work, leisure, sports, national and international exchanges, and many other pillars of our modern civilization have been jeopardized.Looking back to thespecial tribute newsletterwe wrote collectively, one year ago, under the flag of theAlliance for the Prudent Use of Antibiotics (APUA), as a tribute to Professor Stuart Levy’s key publications, feels like a return to our roots. Still, most of the topics covered in these pages remain contemporary and of high value. We most likely will see the end of the COVID-19 pandemic, hopefully before the second anniversary of Stuart Levy’s death, and we will then have to boost actions for better use of antibiotics worldwide, a topic sadly neglected over the last months. By that time, all the basics and principles established by Stuart Levy and others will help us to rebuild our collective actions and thrive.Meanwhile, we hope you all keep safe so that we have the pleasure to meet again!Pierre TattevinAPUA ChairNew APUA Board MemberAPUA is delighted to welcome new member, Jeroen Schouten, to the APUA Board.Jeroen is an Intensive Care Physician and Senior Researcher at IQ Health Care, Radboud University, Nijmegen Medical Centre. He is also is a member of Dutch guideline committees for community-acquired Pneumonia, Sepsis and Antibiotic Stewardship for the Dutch Working Group for Antibiotic Policies (SWAB).
