Testimonials

Feedback From Our Students

General:

"The Veterinary Herbal Apprenticeship & Retreat course you and Kris taught was phenomenal and life changing. I was blown away by how thorough and generous you are with your knowledge. I cannot begin to tell you how excited I was to learn so much. You are so full of enthusiasm, generosity, and striving for excellence in what you do. I am so grateful Laurie. Kris’ wisdom, knowledge, peaceful demeanor, and encouragement added so much to the self care part of the course. I think about what both of you taught us every day out here in the trenches.

On Our Materia Medica:

"The lectures were great--lots of good information. I like the inclusion of traditional uses and energetics of the herbs--gives insight into subtleties of herbal action."

On Our Labs:

"Labs were fun and informative and helped me gain confidence in making herbal products for self and family (which I do a lot now)."

On Our Herb Walks:

"Loved them! Seeing, touching, tasting, smelling plants in their natural environment deepened my connection with them and appreciation of them as living entities. "

On Our Homeworks:

"These gave me a welcome "excuse" to spend time researching herbs I didn't know much about. I also gained insights into the way information can be misrepresented on the Internet. Sometimes it was confusing and difficult to sort out 'the real story'."

PURPLE MOON HERB STUDIES' MISSION

Our mission is to educate veterinarians and allied professionals on the use of Herbal Medicine, Nutrition and Food Therapy, Hospice care, Ayurveda, and more. Our training teaches professionals how to blend a variety of wholistic modalities into a western veterinary practice. We combine traditional knowledge about herbal usage with current scientific studies to enhance understanding of herbal actions and safety. We are well-versed in the use of over 400 herbs, administered by tinctures and extracts (concentrated oral formulas), capsules and tablets, teas, lozenges, ointments and salves, and aromatherapy (inhaled essential oils in baths, candles, etc.). Dr. Laurie Dohmen and her associates provide instruction through our own structured classes, private sessions and at conferences. We provide a more wholistic approach to veterinary medicine and nutrition with our homecooking recipes and alternative treatment modalities for pets. We also provide wholistic self-care training for veterinarians themselves.

AHVMA Holistic Educator of the Year Award Winner Laurie Dohmen

I love what I do! Teaching fellow veterinarians all the amazing ways herbs, food, and other holistic modalities can help our patients is so satisfying. It is even more rewarding when my students share with me their success stories treating with what they have learned in Purple Moon classes. I know by teaching I am helping so many more patients than I could if I were still in private practice.

On September 12th, 2022 I was awarded the American Holistic Veterinary Medical Association's Council of Elders Holistic Educator of the Year Award. I am so grateful for this honor. To be distinguished by my peers was such a recognition of Purple Moon Herbs and Studies, all our instructors, and myself. I now know that others see the difference we are making in the veterinary field.

OVERVIEW:

This conference is intended to educate the veterinarian in Ayurvedic theory and its implementation into food and herbal therapy. Many of the herbs used in Ayurveda are also used in Western and Chinese Herbal Medicine. There will be introductory talks about Ayurvedic Theory, with explanation of the Elements, Doshas (personality types), Gunas (traits of each personality type), Dhatus (tissues), and the concept of Agni (digestive fire). This will progress into a more in-depth look at interpreting Ayurvedic Materia Medica, followed by actual Materia Medica for foods and herbs. All lectures include an organoleptic/tactile component. The last day will be spent as a cooking lab, putting the Materia Medica into practice, with a fun “quiz” at the end! We will be preparing both foods and herbal remedies, and students will have the opportunity to learn techniques and sample what is prepared.

OVERVIEW:

This course will introduce and help to advance manual rehabilitation skills and elaborate on how these can increase the options in your pain management toolbox. We will review anatomy, massage, rehabilitation modalities and exercises that can be incorporated into any general practice. The course will utilize both lecture and lab.

Lectures include an overview of a variety of rehabilitation modalities that can be reasonably obtained in your practice including laser, PEMF, ultrasound, and TENS. We will have most of these available and work in small groups to learn to utilize them correctly. Hands on modalities such as laser, shockwave, PEMF and basic joint work will also be demonstrated and practiced. We firmly believe that a proper rehabilitation plan must be based on the goals you and your clients set at the start and revise based on clinical progress. We will discuss how to create these and incorporate into a therapeutic plan. Therapeutic exercises will be discussed so that you can learn which to choose for specific muscle groups and then how they work to assist in an exercise plan.

To tie everything together, we will go through real cases, have students develop goals and a treatment plan and work on developing an in office and at home exercise plan for common ailments.

Continental breakfast is included each morning.

Lectures include the integrative physical exam; understanding herbal monographs; and herb selection, formulation and administration options for our patients. Included are hands-on labs and an herb walk during an excursion to a different section of the Outer Banks. This course is designed to be a relaxed precursor to our Veterinary Herbal Apprenticeship and Retreat. Anyone signing up for both courses will receive a 10% discount on VHAR registration. Continental breakfast is included each morning.

AHVMA Holistic Educator of the Year Award

Winner Laurie Dohmen
