AAUP Foundation

The AAUP Foundation is organized to fund the charitable and educational purposes of the AAUP, including supporting principles of academic freedom and the quality of higher education in a free and democratic society. 

 

Faculty First Responders

As part of his Faculty First Responders project, supported by the Foundation's Academic Freedom Fund, Trinity College political scientist Isaac Kamola has created a website with resources for faculty to learn about Campus Reform, its use of students to write articles that stir up conservative outrage against higher education, and how to respond to harassment in the wake of such coverage.

Agents of Change, a documentary exploring the legacy of 1960s campus activism that resulted in the creation of black and ethnic studies programs, is available for streaming online. The Foundation's Academic Freedom Fund provided support for production of the film and for outreach to AAUP chapters and conferences seeking to schedule screenings of the film.

Protecting Governance

The AAUP Foundation provided financial support for the AAUP’s investigation of the crisis in academic governance that has occurred in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. It's the broadest investigation the AAUP has conducted since its 1956 report on attacks on academic freedom at eighteen institutions during the McCarthy era.

Featured Grant

Supporting Faculty

The AAUP Foundation will underwrite the costs of a special committee report on a pattern of violations of principles of academic governance and persistent structural racism in the University of North Carolina system. The report will consider, among other issues, the mishandled tenure case of Nikole Hannah-Jones and the influence of the state legislature on the systemwide board of governors and campus boards of trustees.
