It is with great sadness that I announce the passing of Chuck Cady, long time local fan, costume wearer (with his family) and art collector (particularly centaurs)

He passed away of natural causes on the morning of Friday, August 5th.

He willed his body to the U of A Medical School.

There will be a celebration of his life on Saturday, September 3rd from noon to 6 pm at the family home in Glendale, Arizona. Email the webmaster for directions.

Chuck was known for humorous costuming to body type

- he was the Cyclops with a 10 year old Odysseus and his 7-10 year old crew

- With his baby son Sam he did ZaphodBeeblebrox’s older and younger brother

- With his wife of 20 some years he did ‘Nymph and satyr – 20 years later”

RIP

He will be missed

Every cauldron needs a fire under it! These hot coals are a time-tested way to do this. With the advent of battery powered LEDs, these coals can be used in new ways.
In this class you will learn how to accomplish this effect and discuss novel applications too!
This class is free to attend, materials not included. We are asking $20 for all the materials to create your own hot coal effect.
Register and pay here: https://guestlist.co/events/722406
This is a BUILD class. If you do not show for the build, there is no refund and neither HeatSync nor AZ Haunters will provide any compensation after the event is over.

September 17, 2022, 10-2 - Return of the Demented Dolls AZ Haunters workshop at HeatSynch Labs, 108 W. Main Street, Mesa, AZ.

Theeeeeey're BAAaaack! - One of the most popular of the AZ Haunters events has returned - Demented Dolls!
Once thought lost forever in the detritus of 2020, this workshop has crawled out into the light once again.
This make and take will cover some of the basics touched on in previous years, PLUS we will be talking about some techniques not previously shown.
We want this to be accessible to everyone so here's the deal:
For $10 per doll, you get a doll and all the materials to corrupt it. $20 for two dolls, you get the picture.
The money goes to pay for the supplies and to give some to he Lab for their support.
If you want to just show up and listen, that's cool.
If you pay for a doll and cannot make it to the event, you will have two weeks to arrange to come pick up the unaltered doll. There is no guarantee what kind of doll it will be and no additional supplies can be provided.

CASFS Book & Media Social

Your Webmaster also organizes a monthly activity of the Central Arizona Speculative Fiction Society's (CASFS) Book and Media Social. We get together once a month to talk about a pre-selected book, film or other media experience for a bit. After that, conversation can go anywhere. We meet at the Fuddrucker's restaurant at 8941 North Black Canyon Highway in Phoenix at 7PM on the third Tuesday of every month. We run a Zoom meeting in parallel to the in-person one, so you can participate even if you can't get your corpus to Phoenix.

Check out the CASFS Book & Media Social Facebook group https://www.facebook.com/groups/1602983896683877, the AZ Fandom Facebook Group and the CASFS web page at http://casfs.org/book_social.html for directions to the meeting or the Zoom link or e-mail webmaster@southwestcostumersguild.org.

Here is the media list for second half of 2022:

July 19, 2022 - A Psalm for the Wild-Built by Becky Chambers(Monk and Robot Book 1) FromAmazon.com: “It's been centuries since the robots of Panga gained self-awareness and laid down their tools; centuries since they wandered, en masse, into the wilderness, never to be seen again; centuries since they faded into myth and urban legend. One day, the life of a tea monk is upended by the arrival of a robot, there to honor the old promise of checking in. The robot cannot go back until the question of "what do people need?" is answered. But the answer to that question depends on who you ask, and how. They're going to need to ask it a lot.” Tor recently put this out as a free e-book. August 16, 2022 - Terminal Alliance by Jim C. Hines(first in the Janitors of the Post Apocalypse series) FromAmazon.com: “Marion “Mops” Adamopoulos is surprisingly bright (for a human). As a Lieutenant on the Earth Mercenary Corps Ship Pufferfish, she’s in charge of the Shipboard Hygiene and Sanitation team. When a bioweapon attack wipes out the Krakau command crew and reverts the rest of the humans to their feral state, only Mops and her team are left with their minds intact. Escaping the attacking aliens—not to mention her shambling crewmates—is only the beginning. Sure, Mops and her team of space janitors and plumbers can clean the ship as well as anyone, but flying the damn thing is another matter. As they struggle to keep the Pufferfish functioning and find a cure for their crew, they stumble onto a conspiracy that could threaten the entire alliance… a conspiracy born from the truth of what happened on Earth all those years ago.” September 20, 2022 - The Kaiju Preservation Society by John Scalzi FromAmazon.com: “When COVID-19 sweeps through New York City, Jamie Gray is stuck as a dead-end driver for food delivery apps. That is, until Jamie makes a delivery to an old acquaintance, Tom, who works at what he calls “an animal rights organization.” Tom’s team needs a last-minute grunt to handle things on their next field visit. Jamie, eager to do anything, immediately signs on. What Tom doesn't tell Jamie is that the animals his team cares for are not here on Earth. Not our Earth, at least. In an alternate dimension, massive dinosaur-like creatures named Kaiju roam a warm, human-free world. They're the universe's largest and most dangerous panda and they're in trouble. It's not just the Kaiju Preservation Society who have found their way to the alternate world. Others have, too. And their carelessness could cause millions back on our Earth to die.” October 18, 2022 - Magic Kingdom for Sale: Sold by Terry Brooks FromAmazon.com: “Landover was a genuine magic kingdom, with fairy folk and wizardry, just as the advertisement has promised. But after he purchased it, Ben Holiday learned that there were a few details the ad had failed to mention. The kingdom was in ruin. The Barons refused to recognize a king, and the peasants were without hope. A dragon was laying waste the countryside, while an evil witch plotted to destroy everything. Ben's only followers were the incompetent Court Magician; Abernathy, the talking dog who served as Court Scribe; and the lovely Willow—but she had a habit of putting down roots in the moonlight and turning into a tree. The Paladin, legendary champion of the Kings of Landover, seemed to be only a myth and an empty suit of armor. To put the final touch on the whole affair, Ben soon learned that the Iron Mark, terrible lord of the demons, had challenged all prospective Kings of Landover to duel to the death—a duel which no human could hope to win. The task of proving his right to be King seemed hopeless. But Ben Holiday was stubborn. . . .” November 22, 2022 – The Haunting of Tram Car 015 by P. Djeli Clark. FromAmazon.com: “Cairo, 1912: The case started as a simple one for the Ministry of Alchemy, Enchantments and Supernatural Entities — handling a possessed tram car. Soon, however, Agent Hamed Nasr and his new partner Agent Onsi Youssef are exposed to a new side of Cairo stirring with suffragettes, secret societies, and sentient automatons in a race against time to protect the city from an encroaching danger that crosses the line between the magical and the mundane.”

December 20, 2022 – Roadmarks by Roger Zelazny FromAmazon.com: “The Road runs from the unimaginable past to the far future, and those who travel it have access to the turnoffs leading to all times and places—even to the alternate time-streams of histories that never happened. Why the Dragons of Bel'kwinith made the Road—or who they are-—no one knows. But the Road has always been there and for those who know how to find it, it always will be!”
