IndieWire: Regé-Jean Page Was ‘Physically Shook’ Watching ‘The Gray Man’ and Calls Russo Bros. Film ‘Insane’

No commentsJun 22, 2022by Ann

“This is the biggest action movie that I’ve ever seen,” Page said of the caper starring Ryan Gosling and Chris Evans.

Even the Duke of Hastings can’t compete with “The Gray Man.”

“Bridgerton” breakout Regé-Jean Page detailed his secretive role in the Russo Brothers’ spy caper “The Gray Man,” in select theaters July 15 and streaming on Netflix July 22. The cat-and-mouse thriller stars Chris Evans as sociopathic assassin Lloyd Hansen, who is hired to hunt down CIA mercenary Courtland Gentry, aka Sierra Six (Ryan Gosling), after a security breach. Ana de Armas, Billy Bob Thornton, and “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” scene-stealer Julia Butters also star in the most expensive Netflix film to date.

“I mean, the scope of the thing is insane,” Page told Elle. “I think the Russos have talked about that publicly in terms of how many set pieces they have going, in terms of the size of their ambition for this project. When I watched this thing in a screening room, it physically shook me. So I don’t think that there’s any limits to how big this is. This is the biggest action movie that I’ve ever seen.”

He added, “The fun thing about the Russos, they are such masters of genre that they can kind of turn on a dime between an absolute white-knuckle adrenaline ride, and then this kind of community-esque wink at the camera where everything is actually very funny, straight back into white-knuckle action, you know? I think the way that they’re able to play with genre like that and make sure that everyone’s having this compelling, enjoyable experience through a movie with such weight is really quite special.”

Details about Page’s character are still “in the classified file” according to the actor, but he could reveal that his onscreen persona is the “head of the CIA clandestine services” and that the role gave him an opportunity to showcase a new side of his acting talent.

“There’s a lot of shadow and contrast to this character, it’s something that I don’t think people have seen a lot of from me specifically before, which was great fun for me to play with,” Page said. “These people live in the shadows, you kind of gotta discover them in the movie.”

The Russo Brothers already dished that “The Gray Man” was the “movie [that] almost killed us,” with Joe Russo adding, “There are, like, nine action sequences, and it’s so relentless in that regard. It was relentless to make.”

Like Page, the Russos crafted “character-oriented” action sequences around the duality of the ensemble cast. Anthony Russo previously said, “We start all of our exploration of action through character. How do we test who this character is? How do we trap them in the worst possible place, like in the airplane sequence. That’s a very vulnerable place for that character to be in, and it shows you how vigilant he is, and how disciplined he is.”

“The Gray Man” is already spurring a franchise based on Gosling’s Sierra Six character with a follow-up film already in motion, plus expected spinoff projects.

“The focus is to make ‘Gray Man 2.’ Our appetite is voracious and the intention is always to do more than we can,” Anthony Russo concluded.

The Hollywood Reporter: Rege-Jean Page to Star in Paramount’s ‘The Saint’ Reboot (Exclusive)

No commentsAug 13, 2021by Ann

Playwright-actor Kwame Kwei-Armah is writing the film.

Paramount is seeing Regé-Jean Page’s halo.

Page, the breakout actor from Neflix’s Bridgerton, has come aboard to star in and executive produce the studio’s reboot of The Saint. At the same time, playwright and actor Kwame Kwei-Armah has been brought in to write a new draft of the script for the adventure thriller. This is Page’s second project with Paramount following the upcoming Dungeons & Dragons.

Producing The Saint are Lorenzo di Bonaventura and Brad Krevoy, as well as Robert Evans, who died in 2019 and will receive a posthumous credit.

The moves put new energy behind the long-gestating project, which as late as last year had Chris Pine attached and Dexter Fletcher directing. That iteration of the project is now shelved, although Fletcher’s current involvement remains unclear. The filmmaker is well-regarded within the studio — he is currently directing Paramount Television Studios’ making-of-The Godfather limited series The Offer for Paramount+.

Saint is based on the early 20th century adventure novels by Leslie Charteris that featured a mysterious man named Simon Templar taking down various bad guys. The character proved quite popular, appearing in comics, serials and, of course, movies and television. Roger Moore famously starred in the 1960s British TV series of the same name, while Val Kilmer starred in Paramount’s 1997 film The Saint as a master of disguise. The logline for the new version is being kept under wraps.

Kwei-Armah co-wrote 892, an indie drama now shooting with John Boyega in the lead. He is also writing the Spike Lee musical All Rise. As a playwright, he won the Peggy Ramsey award and is currently serving as artistic director of The Young Vic in London.

Page’s work as Bridgerton heartthrob Simon Basset made him one of Hollywood’s most sought-after actors, with legions of fans disappointed when news came down in April that he would not be returning for the Netflix period drama’s second season.

Since his ascension to the top of Hollywood ranks, he lined up roles in the Russo brothers’ The Gray Man with Chris Evans and Ryan Gosling, as well as Paramount’s Dungeons & Dragons movie. Saint, which would reteam him with Paramount, would be his first time headlining a studio feature.

Page is repped by CAA, Mosaic, The Artists Partnership and attorney Greg Slewett. Kwei-Armah is repped by United Agents, Redefine Entertainment and Lichter, Grossman.

Deadline: Regé-Jean Page Not Returning For Season 2 Of ‘Bridgerton’

No commentsApr 2, 2021by Ann

The Duke is gone. Regé-Jean Page, who became a global heartthrob as the dashing Duke of Hastings in Season 1 of Bridgerton, will not be part of Season 2 of Shondaland’s hit Netflix series. In typical Bridgerton fashion, the news was revealed by no other than the show’s intrepid Lady Whistledown. Her announcement on Bridgerton’s Twitter account was accompanied by a note, “Your Grace, it has been a pleasure”. (See it below)

Page responded on Twitter. “Pleasure and a privilege! An honour to be a member of the family – on and off screen, cast, crew and incredible fans – the love is real and will just keep growing,” he wrote.

Page and Phoebe Dynevor were breakout stars as Simon, the Duke of Hastings, and Daphne Bridgerton, the couple whose sweeping romance was at the center of Season

For the People alum Page had only been contracted for one season, and the plan was always for him to only do Season 1, based on the first Bridgerton book, The Duke And I, sources said. His character will be referenced going forward though he won’t appear. As a Bridgerton, Dynevor’s Daphne will continue to be a part of the series, Lady Whistledown confirmed. (Each of the eight Bridgerton novels by Julia Quinn centers on one of the Bridgerton siblings.)

The second season of Bridgerton will chronicle the pursuit of a suitable marriage for the eldest sibling, Anthony (Jonathan Bailey), as chronicled in the second book, The Viscount Who Loved Me. Anthony’s love interest, Kate Sharma, will be played by Simone Ashley. Production on the new season, whose new cast additions also include newcomer Charithra Chandran as Edwina and Rupert Young as Jack, begins in early April.

“While all eyes turn to Lord Anthony Bridgerton’s quest to find a Viscountess, we bid adieu to Regé-Jean Page, who so triumphantly played the Duke of Hastings,” Lady Whistledown wrote. “We’ll miss Simon’s presence onscreen, but he will always be a part of the Bridgerton family. Daphne will remain a devoted wife and sister, helping her brother navigate the upcoming social season and what it has to offer – more intrigue and romance than my readers may be able to bear.”

In addition to global popularity, which put Page in the mix to be the next James Bond and landed him a hosting gig on Saturday Night Live, Bridgerton brought the actor awards recognition for his portrayal of Simon. He won an NAACP Image Award last week and is nominated for an individual SAG Award in addition to sharing in the show’s ensemble nomination.

While Simon and Daphne’s love story wrapped up nicely at the end of Season 1, fans had been looking forward to seeing more of the Duke. “I hope so,” Bridgerton creator Chris Van Dusen said when asked whether Page and Dynevor’s characters will be back as he announced the Season 2 renewal in January. “They are now of course the Duke and Duchess of Hastings but in my mind they will always be Bridgertons and I think they will always be part of the show.”

Today, Van Dusen bid farewell to Page.

“Writing the Duke of Hastings for this series has been a true privilege and I’ll forever cherish His Grace’s #Bridgerton reign,” he wrote on Twitter. “Thank you to the fans for embracing him and to @regejean for bringing him to life in such beautifully moving and memorable ways. #TheDukeIsForever”

With its vibrant mix of Jane Austen-meets-Gossip Girl and its contemporary storytelling redefining the period drama and romance genres, Bridgerton has captivated audiences around the world to shatter Netflix’s viewership records. It became the streamer’s biggest series ever as 82 million households globally watched the first season (partially or in its entirety) in the first four weeks.
