The latest blow came as Britain's biggest building society, Nationwide, confirmed yesterday that it would not be offering mortgages to those without at least a 15 per cent deposit for the time being, unless they were already customers. But they could still benefit from little-known deals linking to a family member's home or savings. What Car? tested 56 different cars currently on sale in showrooms today, finding that some were up to a fifth less fuel efficient than manufacturers' websites and brochures claim. The worst performer was a petrol Volvo XC40 (pictured inset), which was 22% less economical when driving in the world than advertised. The CPI measure of inflation stood at 0.5% in May, a four-year low and the fourth successive month in which inflation has fallen, according to the ONS. It means 59 easy-access deals now beat it along with nearly 178 Isas. We round-up the top accounts. A month of record sunshine in May helped boost the country's mood despite the coronavirus lockdown, but it also proved fertile ground for scammers. The number of people caught out in purchase scams when trying to buy hot tubs increased five-fold in May compared to the month before, according to NatWest. Pictured: The cast of 2010 film Hot Tub Time Machine. I tried to transfer my M&G Isa, worth about £73,000, to Fidelity's investing platform but Fidelity re-bought the funds rather than leaving my investment in cash, as I had requested. I wanted to buy three investment trusts. I phoned and was told there was a long queue, so it might be better to write. I did this, but heard nothing. I called again on December 17 and by then, share prices had risen after the General Election. Thousands of over-50s have had their dreams of giving up work dashed after the Covid-19 crisis wrecked their retirement plans. Many say they can no longer afford to stop working because the value of their pension savings has plummeted. Self-employed Jude Hough was planning to stop working at 55. She estimates retirement is now at least ten years away because of the impact of lockdown. Nanda Marchant saw her income dry up when her research business was forced to shut. Recently retired David Thompson, 63, saw his pension savings fall by 50 per cent in the recent stock market crash. Many people previously only used online shopping to make one-off purchases of items that were perhaps too heavy to carry, or too far away to collect. But couriers are now scrambling to keep up as families demand multiple deliveries a day from different retailers. The closure comes more than two years after the document and banknote maker lost the contract to print Britain's blue Brexit passports to Franco-Dutch company Gemalto. The troubled firm is looking to turn the business around with a shift to plastic bank notes, and plans to raise £100m in equity to fund the changes. The East Midlands town has three claims to fame: its Crown Derby fine porcelain, its football club and the engineering prowess at Rolls-Royce, a byword for British quality, employing 12,000 locals. It initially announced the programme back in February following a dramatic one-third fall in its annual profits. Chief executive Noel Quinn described the scheme as 'one of the deepest restructuring and simplification programmes in our history.' But they were put on hold two months later, with the firm stating that it did not want to harm the wellbeing of their staff at a time of great uncertainty. What is gold - is it a hedge against inflation or against deflation, or just a safe-haven in times of crisis? We ask whether inflation or deflation is the greater risk in the coming months and years and whether gold is a sensible option for investors looking to diversify. The damage is causing many to rethink their plans, even younger workers who have plenty of time to recover investment losses, according to an Aegon study. Separate research found half of all workers say the financial hit from the virus means their pension pots will no longer deliver the income they need for a decent retirement. They report a 'significant fall' in the value of their savings following the Covid-19 outbreak, says Fidelity. I found a property for sale that was available last October with an asking price of £1.75million. It didn't sell and is now back on the market for £50,000 more. Is this a case of people putting houses back on the market for a bit more than just before the coronavirus, expecting buyers to ask for a discount, and allowing them to think they're getting a good deal? There has been a record rise in new investors in Britain during lockdown data suggests, with novices driving the change. What do you need to get started? This is Money editor Simon Lambert reveals to host Georgie Frost what first timers need to know on building a diverse investment portfolio. Ministers have recommended that commuters find alternatives to buses, trains and tubes during the crisis, suggesting cycling or walking where possible - and if not using private cars. Motorists who were not using their motors to go to and from their jobs before the pandemic will need to swap their insurance to a Social, Domestic, Pleasure and Commuting policy - which ultimately be more expensive. And costs are set to rise across the board as more people get behind the wheel - especially during peak times - and the risk of crashes rises in the eyes of insurers. In an open letter to instructors from DVSA ceo Gareth Llewellyn, he said driving lessons and tests will 'only restart when the government is confident that the assessment of risk warrants it'. The coronavirus pandemic has brought many small businesses to their knees as most shops have been forced to shut down due to the lockdown and demand has dropped after people found themselves struggling financially after losing their jobs. But some companies have been making the most of the cards they've been dealt, with one of the most common routes out of the crisis diverting business online, or accelerating an online transition that was already happening. For some, the Covid crisis has meant start selling online for the very first time, as it happened with independent toy chain Toy Barnhaus (pictured). Launched in 1970, loved by the Queen and the Royal Family and driven by customers as diverse as footballers David Beckham and Vinnie Jones, entrepreneur Sir Richard Branson, comedian James Corden and boxers Anthony Joshua and Mike Tyson, more than a million have been sold over four generations. To celebrate the half-century since the Range Rover's 1970 debut, and mark the year of its birth, Land Rover is also launching a limited-run Range Rover Fifty model (main right) which will be restricted to just 1,970 vehicles globally to mark the year of its arrival. The triple lock, one of Boris Johnson's manifesto pledges, means rises in state pension payouts are decided by whatever is the highest of price inflation, average earnings growth or 2.5 per cent. But with decreasing inflation and depressed wages, and the working population among the worst affected by the crisis, the Government may find it easier to ignore this safeguard for state pensioners' income, according to Steve Webb. Investors in some big name funds took a pounding as markets nosedived, but those who didn't panic sell have been rewarded for holding their nerve. These big beasts of the global fund and investment trust world, such as Fundsmith, Lindsell Train and Scottish Mortgage, have recorded some sparkling gains since markets hit a bottom on 23 March, but which have done best and why? Profit from smaller company shares but take less risk - Gresham House... How to find the world's best dividend shares: Evenlode Global Income... I am going to be 66 in December this year. I have a private pension from Transport for London. Will that be taken away from my state pension, or added to it and count towards my total income? Also, if I decide to work part time at a weekend job how will it affect my pension? Sports fans are being targeted with a range of new TV package 'special offers' to coincide with the restart of the Premier League. But before signing up to a deal, it is worth considering all options. High Street banks have largely deserted customers with a deposit of 10 per cent, but last week TSB became the first to remove all home purchase, remortgage and share ownership products with a loan-to-value ratio of 85 per cent. One banking source said there was 'a worry about house prices' in the market. Banks fear they will lose money on mortgages if prices drop rapidly and repossessions cannot recoup the money loaned. The rip-off ruse involves fraudsters posting fake reviews on the internet to trick people into buying often sub-standard goods and services - sometimes even potentially dangerous counterfeits. The coronavirus pandemic has left the investment world topsy-turvy. Some businesses that might have thrived in more normal times are struggling while those that were seen as staid and boring are suddenly viewed as safe bets. For the fund management industry - overseers of our long-term investments - this has required them to adjust their portfolios. Individual investors can learn from fund manager dealings, so here's a rundown of some of the big moves they've made in recent months - and why. The amount you can save into a pension ultimately depends on what you can afford - but the longer you leave it the more you will need to save.
