By studying the library’s history and understanding its cultural importance, we worked with an approach based on seeking authenticity and discovery –letting the heritage stand in its raw beauty.For more information on the project, click here. 18.11.2020 We have been selected as one of five finalists to design the new Shenzhen International Performance Center in China Schmidt Hammer Lassen Architects has been selected by a jury including Zhu Pei, Rem Koolhaas and Massimiliano Fuksas, as one of five finalists in an international competition to design the new Shenzhen International Performance Center in the heart of Futian District in Shenzhen, China.Combining the notions of Shenzhen Building on Reflection and Future Dream Performance Center , the project, which is surrounded by lakes and an abundance of green space, aims to become a world-class space for modern arts that excites the imagination, fulfills fantasies, uses new materials, promotes greater comfort and uses new technology to create wondrous spectacles.Schmidt Hammer Lassen has a variety of civic, cultural, built and ongoing projects in China. Some of them including the Shenzhen Waste to Energy Power Plant, the world s largest green power plant, and Shanghai Library East, a project conceived as a singular monolithic object floating above a tree canopy within Pudong District’s Century Park. Both works are expected to complete in 2021. 05.11.2020 State Library Victoria receives one of Australia s top architectural honours State Library Victoria, designed in collaboration with Architectus, has received a Commendation for Public Architecture at the 2020 Australian Institute of Architects’ National Architecture Awards.“The State Library Victoria is Australia’s oldest and busiest public library. The Vision 2020 redevelopment addressed ageing buildings, changing needs and confusing circulation through a skillful and sound design framework that will expand the library’s reach and relevance for many generations to come, “ said the jury.The redevelopment has brought together and clarified a conglomeration of 23 buildings, unlocking and transforming 15 spaces for public use. It has created new connections and reinstated the through-block link and Russell Street entry to enhance legibility and access. Public space has been increased by 40% and seating by 70%, expanding the possibilities of the library’s functions.Interiors have been stripped of years of building clutter to reveal their original character, in turn, opening up more usable spaces for contemporary research and learning. The Royal Danish Academy – Architecture, Design and Conservation and the UIA World Congress of Architects in Copenhagen 2023 have launched An Architecture Guide to the United Nations 17 Sustainable Development Goals Volume 2 , a book including Schmidt Hammer Lassen Architects’ symbol of hope, unity, and rebirth, the Christchurch Central Library, a project representing UN’s Goal #16: Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions.Civic institutions such as public libraries are cornerstones in a just and peaceful society and represent a commitment to an inclusive and compassionate community.To read more about how architecture can contribute to the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals, visit Royal Danish Academy. Statens Kunstfond awards Vendsyssel Theatre  The Danish Art Foundation – Statens Kunstfond has awarded Vendsyssel Theatre in Hjørring, Denmark with a special award recognizing its cultural and architectural importance which has become a dynamo for the entire region s life.When Vendsyssel Theatre opened back in 2017, it was the first newly built theatre in over a century outside the Danish Capital of Copenhagen becoming a unique, cultural axis for the citizens and visitors to Hjørring in Northern Jutland. The project already holds other recognitions such as the City of Hjørring Architecture Prize 2017 and the Archilovers Best Projects Award 2017.It is for the first time in The Danish Art Foundation’s history that architecture receives this distinction and we are deeply honoured for Vendsyssel Theatre to be awarded together with other projects of significance. The purpose of the project is not to become just an educational facility, but to embrace the existing site, create coherence and value and bring it to new heights, finding the perfect blend of distinction and functionality.As architects passionate about higher learning and the quest for knowledge, we aim to design spaces which provide students, academics and staff with an environment that works with them and for them, now and the in the future. The revitalization of Commonwealth Pier in Boston starts construction Construction has begun on the redesign of Boston’s Seaport World Trade Center, an expansive mixed-use development on historic Commonwealth Pier in the city’s Seaport District. Designed by Schmidt Hammer Lassen, the adaptive reuse project will introduce new ways to explore and engage with the waterfront. These include a public plaza, an enhanced Harborwalk, retail, and first-class Seaport Hotel event and meeting spaces, as well as a unique, flexible workplace.International real estate developer Pembroke turned to Schmidt Hammer Lassen, along with Boston-based architectural firm CBT, to honor the site’s historic integrity while also introducing new materials, increasing daylight, and providing new points of connectivity. Commonwealth Pier was built more than 100 years ago and was once the largest of its kind in the world. The revitalization project, which is targeting LEED Gold Certification, incorporates advanced design strategies for resilience and sustainability to ensure the pier’s continued enjoyment for generations to come.“In our approach to the Commonwealth Pier’s transformation we have tried to be mindful and meticulous,” said Kristian Ahlmark, Partner and Design Director at Schmidt Hammer Lassen. “We approached the place with curiosity and precision, and carefully assessed what we found important to preserve – both architecturally and culturally. We engaged in a continuous conversation with the building throughout the process, which was done in close collaboration with Pembroke and the many great consultants that have been a part of this journey.”Construction of Commonwealth Pier is expected to complete in 2024.
