DaffodilsWhen Should You Plant DaffodilsOn July 28, 2019 by Dave LaneEveryone knows that daffodils are one of the most beautiful flowers that exist. It’s clear to see why this is the case as their bright yellow to white petals brightens up your mood instantly. As well, their cone-shaped funnels attract insects such as butterflies and bees who are important pollinators that help your garden bloom into a gorgeous addition to your home. Also, daffodils are easy to grow if done properly. One aspect of planting daffodils for them to grow properly is to plant the bulbs of this flower at the right time. So, if you want to add the beloved daffodil to your garden, the most important question that you should ask is when should you plant daffodils? The simple conclusion for this statement is that you should plant daffodils in the fall. To be more precise, this means anywhere from early September to early November. However, there are many reasons to why this is the case and it is important for every gardener out there to know why. When Daffodils BloomFirst off, we must acknowledge the time in which a daffodil is expected to bloom. Daffodils are early spring blooming flowers which means that they are one of the first flowers to appear when spring comes into season. The early spring months that daffodils are expected to bloom begins in late March and ends around early June. This, however also depends on the region where you live and, therefore, where you plant your daffodils.Aspects of growing regions that will affect your daffodils expected time to bloom include the amount of sun that is received, the amount of rain that falls, the extent of the previous winter season such as how long it lasted and how cold it got and so on. To have your daffodils blooming in time, you must plant them at least in the fall before the desired spring season. This is because daffodils need to establish a firm root system before they can bloom successfully. This root system is essential as daffodil bulbs need to soak up enough nutrients from the soil to gain the energy to grow later when spring comes around. Also, a daffodil bulb will need these nutrients to develop the right sized petals, stem and leaves when it fully blooms as well. Why Plant in the FallAnother reason why you must plant daffodils in the fall is that these flower bulbs need to be in the ground before the last frost hits. This is because when the first frost happens, the soil in your garden will become too frozen and you will not be able to dig a hole deep enough to insert your daffodil bulbs. Follow this tip and you will be sure to have daffodils in the spring! According to the Cancer Council Australia, the Council that use the daffodil as its emblem (and it is also Cancer Council Canada s at the same time), chose it as its symbol for it implies the return of the spring after a rough and harsh winter, representing a clean sheet, vitality and advancement. This year, besides raising recognition, the Council expects collecting more than 4 million dollars in August, and it will declare a total amount in a show on 23rd of August. It is the most significant day for the Australian, as an effort to raise funds for the fight against cancer, encouraging cancer research with the donations of the nation. Donations will be collected by the people that work for the Council voluntarily all across the country, and also you can support it by donating online.A bitter fact about cancer is that one of every two Australians is diagnosed with this disease. It s sometimes the first sign that spring is on the way. Even in colder climates, they can break through the cold, sometimes frozen soil and signal the impending season!Do you wonder how your neighbor gets their daffodils looking great? What can you do to get your daffodils to grow? It doesn t seem like it would be hard to do. You just plant and water them right? Unfortunately, there are more tips for growing the perfect daffodil. You need to plan aheadDaffodils are not planted in the spring. Instead, they need the cold soil of the winter to help them grow. Plant them in the winter months to make sure they are in bloom for spring. However, you don t want to plant them when the soil is frozen. Make sure the soil is still workable. Any time around September or a bit later should be perfect!Daffodils like sunMake sure to plant your bulbs in a sunny spot. If they are in too much shade, they will grow their leaves but you won t get the actual flower. They also need to be in an area that lets the soil drain when watered. If the water doesn t drain well, the bulbs can rot and will not grow. When to plant themOnce you have chosen what type of daffodils to plant, it s time to plant them. As mentioned above, pick a spot that gets a lot of sun and provides plenty of water drainage. Each bulb needs to be planted 6 to 8 inches blow ground level to make sure it roots properly. If you have a lot of bulbs to plant, you can make a trench and place each bulb in a row. Don t forget to place the pointy end up. After you have filled your trench, make sure to give them plenty of water before you cover them.WateringSpeaking of watering, bulbs do not require much watering. Water them when you plant them and then once a week for 3 weeks. After that, you can leave them alone until spring. Once you see they have sprouted, it s time to water them daily. If you are in an area where it rains a lot, you won t actually have to water them! They can go 2 or 3 days without water. When you notice the daffodil flowers start to fall off, it is time to stop watering them. Daffodils are perennial, which means they will come back year after year. When they start to turn brown, it means that they are preparing to go dormant. If you water them at this stage, the bulbs may begin to rot.If you use these tips to grow your daffodils, you will be rewarded with a beautiful flower garden come spring. All it takes is a little planning and your efforts will pay off. .......... .......... Subscribe to our mailing list to get updates to your email inbox. GET MONTHLY NEWSLETTER
