Trained in photography and the documentary tradition, my artistic interests emerge from the following obsessions: research into visual archives; memory and the erosion of time; parenting - specifically motherhood - and its representations, and feminist subversions of personal and social histories.​​​​Sasha Waters Freyer is amoving image artist and Professor of Film at Virginia Commonwealth University. Since 1998, Sasha has produced and directed 17 documentary and experimental films, 13 of which originate in 16mm. With the exception of her first documentary, she has edited of all of her films. Embracing a personal, artisanal approach to craft, she also served as the cinematographer, primarily in 16mm, and sound editor, on ten of them.Sasha’s most recent documentary,Garry Winogrand: All Things are Photographable (2018)screened theatrically and at festivals around the world; was called one of the year's best byThe New Yorker's Richard Brody, and won a Special Jury Prize for “Best Feminist Reconsideration of a Male Artist” in the Documentary Competition at the2018 SXSW Film Festival.Winograndaired on the PBS seriesAmerican Mastersin April 2019. Her new documentary-in-progress, "Untitled Bruce Conner / Soul Stirrers Project," received support from the Catapult Film Fund and the National Endowment of the Arts. Shewas awarded a 2019-20 Virginia Museum of Art Fine Arts Fellowship, and is the 2016 recipient of the Helen Hill Award from the Orphan Film Symposium. Past support includes residencies at The MacDowell Colony, Yaddo and the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts, as well as funding from the Derek Freese Documentary Film Fund and the Jerome Foundation.Sasha has screened and exhibited at film festivals, museums and galleries from Abu Dhabi and Anchorageto Zagreb and Zurich, as well as in classrooms, church basements, storefronts,and public libraries. Notable venues include the Telluride Film Festival, International Film Festival Rotterdam, Kassel Dokfest, IMAGES in Toronto, the Brooklyn Museum, SF MoMA, LAXART, McEvoy Foundation for the Arts in San Francisco, Microscope Gallery, Big Sky Documentary Film Festivaland Film Forum, NYC.Sasha is included inEdited By: Women Film Editors,a survey of women who "invented, developed, fine-tuned and revolutionized the art of film editing," and in theFemEx Film Archive, an ongoing collective archive of interviews with feminist experimental filmmakers.Pieshake Pictures is named for a unique culinarydelight enjoyed by Sasha's family for many years at theHamburg Inn No. 2 in Iowa City.​Contact: swfreyer@vcu.edu​​​Top of Page
