#1 - Live in Britain’s Ocean City!People who live and visit here say there’s nothing quite like it - and they’re right! With the stunning waterfront and local beaches, natural harbour, rich heritage, and proximity to natural wonders such as Dartmoor National Park, Plymouth is a beautiful place to live. Enjoy the best of both worlds with the second-largest shopping centre in the South West; you can pick from over 400 shops in either Drake Circus shopping mall or the city centre, which is filled with high street and independent shops. Recently built, we also now have The Barcode - an exciting extension of Drake Circus with an IMAX cinema for a stunning cinematic experience, some of our favourite restaurants, and Paradise Island Adventure Golf! If heritage and history is for you, The Box is soon to open - our new cultural destination. It will combine a spectacular museum and gallery, along with an outdoor square for gigs, performances, theatre and events. So, whether it’s the latest fashion, lively nightlife, breathtaking beaches, dramatic moorland or cultural treasures that you seek, Plymouth is the place for you!Read about why Greta loves Plymouth, here. As someone who’s lived in Plymouth my entire life, I’d say I know the city fairly well. Personally, Plymouth has a good balance of the things I’d want in an area. With the sea on one side and the countryside on the other, as well as the city in the centre, the location of Plymouth was a great asset to the University. One of my favourite places to go to is the Hoe. It’s the perfect place to go to relax and have some ice-cream with family and friends! In general, I would say that Plymouth has many aesthetically pleasing places to see, including Mount Edgcumbe and Saltram. I’d definitely recommend visiting these locations! Sometimes picking the right university for you doesn’t just involve the course. There are many other things to bear in mind such as distance from home, accommodation, societies and nightlife. I personally took a leap of faith and came to Plymouth, knowing nobody and being over 300 miles from home. I never attended an Open Day and picked my accommodation based on the online photos (which may be the case for many of you now). All I can say is that it may seem daunting now, but by October you’ll have settled in. Moving away from home to university is scary for everyone, but because everyone is in the same boat it makes it easier.#2 - Become part of a supportive community. As a University of Plymouth student, we want to make sure you’re having the best possible student experience. We all try and spend as much time as possible in the kitchen and shared areas of the flat, and we’ve all gotten to know each other really well outside of our flat. Also, within the first week we made sure to get to know our neighbouring flats as well, whom we have also created friendships with – this is great because it expands our social circle.” Read her blog, here!#3 - Join us in campaigning for a better future. We are committed to developing solutions to the planet’s most challenging issues. Plymouth for me has been very close to my heart since I was young. I remember visiting the National Marine Aquarium and was awestruck by the amazing collection of marine life. We walked around The Plymouth Sound after the aquarium visit and with the blanket of snow that covered the ground and with the fantastic view of the Sea, I fell in love with the city. I have always wanted to come back ever since. Living in Plymouth since the age of 13, a lot of my school friends were astounded by my choice to remain in the city for the course of university. Whilst everyone was itching to leave, I was perfectly happy where I was; after all, I hadn’t lived here for a full 18 years. If I didn’t enjoy my Geography course, I could and would have switched or left university in my first term. So getting to my final year is not only a testimony to my own hard work but also to the course. This is not to say there haven’t been a couple of challenges along the way… Almost straight away when I found my course I knew that Plymouth was the place for me. But honestly, the student life, campus and city itself were just a bonus that I did not expect. Melanie Picture this: A beautiful, hot, sunny evening on campus. The University is alive with people, music and dancing. You are surrounded by your friends and housemates, dressed in your summer dresses and suits. University is done for the year – Life. Is. Good! 1. Don’t choose a firm or insurance choice uni without either visiting or doing lots of online research2. Don’t base your decision purely on reputation and league tables as you need to find the right uni for you3. Don’t make hasty decisions. Do in-depth research by checking uni websites and contacting enquiries teams4. Trust your instincts! Don’t go to a uni just because it’s where your friends or family are going/have been I wont shy away from the fact that prior to my UCAS application, Plymouth was not my first choice. Many of my friends had their eyes set on larger city campuses far away from home, with some even considering university abroad! At the time I feared that staying locally in the South West would confine me, and that there would be more opportunities in the bigger central cities (particularly in the increasingly competitive field of law). As you can guess from the fact I am writing this post, my misconceptions of Plymouth not ‘stretching my limits enough’ were quickly eradicated and now I cannot imagine myself being anywhere else! From student DJs and live music to outdoor fi lm screenings in iconic locations, there’s a lot more to Plymouth nightlife than your average night on the town... Finding Accommodation in Plymouth was not the hardest thing on earth for me. This is mainly because there are so many options available catering to different student needs. During my first year in Plymouth, I decided to share a house together with a few of my friends. We were able to get in touch with a couple of accommodation providers in Plymouth and after a few viewings virtually we chose the favourite house out of the list. It does feel like a holiday at times, especially with the sea being so close and all the nice views, plus the buildings on campus are so close together, with the student union right in the centre. I really like that about Plymouth; the scenery and the proximity of the buildings on campus are the main reasons I chose it in the first place. I moved countries because of the opportunities and the endless advantages of knowing the English language for international work. I come from a small country in Eastern Europe called Lithuania. I always dreamed of travelling and studying abroad, however it was a daunting and life changing step to take. Starting a new life in a completely unknown place, with a language that I hardly understood and without my friends around seemed scary. careers hub#4 - We’re invested in your future career. Here at Plymouth, many degrees have the option of taking a placement year in industry or studying abroad. Health care degrees are so varied and the lecturing staff at the University of Plymouth are diverse, specialist and are well connected in respected fields. These degrees really do offer something for everyone. If you are considering a health care degree or simply thinking about returning to university, I thoroughly recommend a Plymouth open day. Julie This part of the country has given me so much time and so many opportunities to pursue my passions in Scuba Diving and sports, whilst studying for an incredibly interesting and fulfilling degree. Physical Geography and Geology (PGG) has been the perfect course for me, teaching me the ins and outs of geology and the processes on the Earth’s surface that are intrinsically linked to the geology. My course has been full of brilliant fieldwork experiences in a huge range of places with crazy weather coming with each different trip. Gaius#5 - We’ve achieved Silver for our Teaching Excellence. The University of Plymouth has been awarded a TEF (Teaching Excellence and Student Outcomes Framework) Silver by the Office for Students. The TEF is a government assessment of the quality of undergraduate teaching and learning in universities and other higher education providers in England.“The University of Plymouth delivers high quality teaching, learning and outcomes for its students. It consistently exceeds rigorous national quality requirements for UK higher education.” - TEF If you have an inclination to enrol in a Chemistry degree at university, I would recommend the course at Plymouth wholeheartedly. Going through A-levels, I was never brilliant at exams. I didn't like being under pressure and having all of my progress decided on by the final exam, rather than how I did throughout the year. So, when looking for a university I decided that I wanted the course to be very engaging. I wanted to focus on practical skills for the later workplace, as well as course work which I could do at my own pace. I looked at several courses at several different universities, but Plymouth's Chemistry course really stood out. This was due to the very high focus on practical skills, along with the preparation it gives you for the working world. I chose Plymouth hands-down because the chemistry course they offered contain a lot of practical work, and was more coursework based than the same course offered by other universities. This was exactly what I was looking for; less reliance on end of year exams and more on whether you can put the knowledge to practice in a lab. JosephStudy with usWhy Plymouth?
