New Roadway Safety Institute focuses on user-centered safety solutions In 2013, the ITS Institute was succeeded by the Roadway Safety Institute, the University Transportation Center for USDOT Region 5. Led by the University of Minnesota, the Roadway Safety Institute conducts research on regional issues related to traffic safety systems and high-risk road users. Visit the Roadway Safety Institute website The Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) Institute was a national University Transportation Center (UTC) funded through federal transportation legislation. The Institute conducted activities that furthered the mission of the UTC program of the United States Department of Transportation (USDOT) to advance U.S. technology and expertise in the many disciplines that make up transportation through education, research, and technology transfer activities at university-based centers of excellence. The ITS Institute's theme was enhancing the safety and mobility of road- and transit-based transportation through a focus on human-centered technology. The Institute's Annual Reports, Sensor newsletter and Research pages document its efforts in roadway safety, traffic management, driver assist systems, and transportation technology that inform the current work of the Roadway Safety Institute.
