It’s going to be very hard to find many Oregon duds from 2016.” – Vinous When we think of the upcoming season of autumn, we start thinking of the great Nebbiolos of the Langhe Hills, along with the white diamonds of the earth, Tartufo Bianco d'Alba, but not to be forgotten is America’s take on the noble Pinot Noir from Oregon’s Willamette Valley. And while many merchants are focused on the latest releases from 2017 and 2018, for IWM, there is no better start to exploring these celebrated wines than from the highly praised vintage of 2016. In fact the wine that captivated the IWM team most in a recent tasting, with its absolutely seductive fruit and silky texture, is the 2016 Nicolas-Jay Willamette Valley Pinot Noir. What we appreciate here is how well the Méo-Camuzet style and touch marries with Willamette – it is not a Burgundy, but rather a deep, silky textured, Oregon Pinot Noir with a level of elegance that separates it from its Sonoma and Willamette counterparts and it should not be missed! For Burgheads and Pinot Noir fans alike, not to mention Nebbiolo and Sangiovese enthusiasts, this may be just as exciting as a release from REM for Rolling Stone subscribers. What do REM and Méo-Camuzet have in common you might ask? Well, for one, Jay Boberg. The co-founder of I.R.S. Records (R.E.M., The Go-Gos, Fine Young Cannibals) turned passionate wine enthusiast convinced long-time friend Jean-Nicolas Méo, of the iconic domaine Méo-Camuzet in Burgundy, to sign on with him in the Willamette Valley to take on the noble varietal on American soil. Like the recent arrival of Jacques Lardière (Maison Louis Jadot) and their new project Résonance, as well as past collaborations such as Louis-Michel (Liger-Belair) with Mark Tarlov (Evening Land) at Chapter 24, and not to mention Drouhin back in 1988, this is another huge import of French talent to the Willamette winemaking scene. Not only does this further validate the promise of the Willamette Valley, but it brings Burgundy’s finest and a historic touch to the region! As for the Nicolas-Jay Willamette Valley Pinot Noir, there is simply Burgundian sensibility here coupled with Oregon character and charm; it reveals itself best through the standout 97-point vintage of 2016. Along with 2012, this is the among the most well-regarded vintages the region has seen, and the year marks the third consecutive outstanding vintage that makes up Oregon’s vintage trifecta of 2014, 2015 and 2016. There’s no doubt about it, these are some of America’s greatest vintages for Pinot Noir over the past 25 years – and the Nicolas Jay should not be missed. It is simply another exciting expression from the dynamic duo. The Méo touch and style is here, generous fruit, aided by the ripe vintage, smooth tannins, silky texture, all with quiet and unobtrusive underlying structure. The wine showcases another side of Pinot from here, there is some darker fruit to marry with the reds, showcasing nuances of black cherry, wild berries, plum, dried herbs, lack tea and lavender. With air the wine really fills out in the glass and gains in texture but remaining light on its feet. We have tasted this wine on several occasions since its release. Our first instinct was to pair it with goat cheese, but perhaps the surprise pairing was Mussels at Harvey Cedars Fish Bar, the wine picked up on the herbs, parmesan, and butter. However, food is not a necessity it pairs nicely with great conversation. Enjoy this now – it is stunning.”John Gilman, View from the Cellar: "The 2016 Pinot Noir "Willamette Valley" from Nicolas-Jay is a lovely young wine, offering up impressive sappiness and precision in its bouquet of red and black cherries, a bit of beetroot, a fine base of soil, woodsmoke, hints of mustard seed and thyme and a very well-done framing of spicy new oak. On the palate the wine is pure, full-bodied and very nicely balanced, with a sappy core, fine transparency, ripe, seamless tannins and a long, tangy and nascently complex finish. This is so well-balanced that it is quite easy to drink in its youth, but the wine has plenty waiting in the wings and I would recommend letting it build in complexity with some bottle age.
