49Curbside Classic: 1989-1992 Nissan Stanza (Bluebird U12): The Shrinking VioletBy Paul Niedermeyer October 14, 2020 (first posted 10/14/2014)    A couple of months ago, Perry shared his thoughts on the first generation of the Nissan Stanza, in a post titled Queen Dork . This is the third and final generation, and the kind of car you have to make a concerted effort to notice, given its exceptionally generic styling straight out of an insurance company ad of the times. A cloak of invisibility normally surrounds these cars, and they only become visible on the third Monday of the month. I forced myself to stop and shoot this one, because I truly wondered whether I would ever run into another one again in that rare state. So in case you ve not seen one exposed in a long while (or ever), here s your chance. There are certain cars that inevitably float up into that vaunted category: Volvo 200 Series, GM B/C Box Bodies, Mercedes W116 and W126, certain Panthers and Foxes, and a few others. But the W123 is right up there, at or near the top. And its successor, the W124 belongs there too, but they seem to rather suddenly have flown the coop. Do they not have the inherent perma-life qualities of the W123? Built to a price by the powers-that-be in Dearborn, the resulting Seville-fighter (not really) was a well-made car, the first car with factory clearcoat, the first car with halogen headlamps. It even had four-wheel disc brakes a rarity on Detroit cars at that time. It was a fine car. Comfortable. Right-sized. But it was still a Granada, and very overpriced. And there lies the rub. If the Corona and Corolla and all the other Toyotas were so red hot in the US, why was the Crown such a flop? And it s not just that the S60 had a weird front end, although that undoubtedly pushed it over the edge and Toyota cancelled it in the US after just two years. The reasons are elucidated in this review. R T did not pull their punches either; they panned it. It was inferior in just about every respect compared to say a Chevy Nova. And quite so in some. The problem was that although the Crown felt very American it wasn t designed for the US. It was a big, prestigious sedan in Japan, despite its severe dynamic limitations. That didn t matter there. Toyota eventually figured it all out, with ever better Cressidas that paved the way for the category-killer Lexus LS. But that was still a way off in the future. In 1972, Toyota would just have to put up with a rare black eye. How about an even smaller truck, Yaris sized? How hard would it be for Toyota to rebadge the adorable Jimny and sell it in the US? The Yaris is being cancelled, so this would be the perfect replacement. Call it Yaris X . Or just YariX. Or a baby Land Cruiser. In Europe, a quite well equipped Jimny starts under €20,000, and that s with their VAT. If these were sold in the US for $20k, you think there wouldn t be folks waiting for the next shipment? A baby Wrangler/Bronco. College girls would be all over it. And me too. Just the ticket to replace my xB; big enough for the three of us, and I could hitch it behind the Promaster for off-road adventures far from home. I was born well after that era, but after the second fuel crisis in 1979, my father traded in his Ford Torino for what he called “the cheapest new car available,” a 1979 Mazda GLC. For the next 25 years, we were oddballs everywhere we went. We were a Mazda family. Read the rest of this entry
